who cares what the Dixie Chicks think about politics anyway? anyone that chooses their music based on the political opinion of the musician is an idiot. I'm from Texas and I also happen to think that Bush is a boob, but it's not like being from Texas is some kind of special club. The point of the comment made by the DC was kind of silly. It would be like me saying that I'm ashamed that Bill Clinton was left-handed.

The problem with the 4-page tech tree for me is that I want to look further down the tree to decide which path I want to take, and a 4-page tree is just too big for me soak in all at once. I orginally tried to make a 1-pager, but the text was way too small! LOL I'm just going to make a tech tree that works for me. People are free to use it if they like, or not. A 2-pager is still small enough to take notes on during a game, and then print a new one for the next game.

The problem is that it is far too easy to get on top of the AI by hoarding Trade Goods. Perhaps they could modify the AI to rush after Trade Goods and then try to sell them to you. You have to admit Trade Goods are way overvalued. There was one game when I rushed to Diplomatic Translators and traded them to one AI for 5 techs and over 20 BC for 20 turns. The other AIs gave me over 40 BC for 20 turns -- in the early game when the economies are very small. That is insan

No new problems with 1.03, but it does seem to be a bit more balanced. It's much harder to dominate by selling techs, but you can still do it with trade goods. Hopefully, that will be next on the list... The AI is getting smarter, and that's a good thing!

You are not losing money. Your production limits are higher in the new government and you're not adjusting your spending pct down to compensate. Once you adjust your spending pct down to where you have the same income as before the governmental change, you will find that your colonies are still producing more than they were before. Higher production rates are great because that is what typically constrains the ability of your population to rush-build an improvement or pull an a

"I'm also wondering if the AI is purposely prejudiced against the human player." I don't know what the developers say, but this seems to be the case. "I've found it virtually impossible to remain in the tech race anymore given the AI's unwillingness to trade." You have two good ways to stay ahead in tech. Be warlike and trade peace for techs, or be productive and trade trade goods for techs. Trade Goods are way overvalued by the AI and you can take them to the

Thanks to the great tool provided by panath (see http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=51497), I was able to take a graphic generated by his program and create a compact tech tree suitable for printing. I changed the yellow colors to gray (for monochrome printers) and moved some techs around to allow a clean split down the middle. These are gif files: Left page: http://www.astrosdaily.com/gc/gctechtree1.gif Right page: http://www.astrosdaily.com/gc/gctechtree2.

"I have also noticed that the AIs are far more free trading with each other than with the player. " Yes, that bugs me. I will not even approach the AI with a tech-for-tech trade because I know it is pointless. It's much easier just to take out a few of his ships and then take a bunch of techs for FREE along with the peace treaty a few turns later.

Stellar Cartography, HANDS DOWN. -- on small maps, obsolete before you get to it. -- on large maps, pointless because of scouts and the fact that there are plenty of inhabitable worlds in non-yellow systems. Also, the AI starts with this tech, but yet will still trade you stuff for it. Finally, I really so no freaking reason why the human doesn't start with the ability to see Yellow stars ESPECIALLY since that is a pre-space travel technology! Sheesh!

Well, one reason I that I play "Intelligent" is so that I can spot AI problems. I have this wild notion that if I see something weird or find something that can be exploited, I can report it to StarDock and they'll consider fixing it. :) For that reason, it's important that the AI and I play by the same rules. If they outproduce me on higher levels, I won't know if their production bonuses or the AI was responsible.

I try a different approach. I have find that my revenue stream is not my constraining factor, but my production limits. So I choose research bonuses for my racial pick (+30, I think) and Industrialist for my part (+20 to social & military prod) I typically min/max my sliders for the next goal so this seems to work well for me. When your Dreadnoughts are taking on Battle Cruisers, you don't have to worry about hit points and repair rates too much ;)

"And if the only benefit is that you get along better with the good guys diplomatically, that's pretty weak." That's exactly what an evil gamer would say! LOL The game is very winnable, but a little more difficult, if you don't make any evil choices. It all boils down to if you want to role-play or not.

"While I agree with your approach I'm very surprised that you can maintain it at all races intelligent. From this point (and especially above) it is extremely unlikely that you can keep all races economically dependent on you." Extremely unlikely? Have you tried this? You just have to stay on top of the AI. Once I get the first 4 trade goods, then my goal shifts from just winning to getting all of the trade goods and wonders. I've done this twice, with worse starts and have ha

So what you are saying is that v1.03 sucks because the AI won't bail you out of your mistake? Besides, the AI will not do even deals unless they come to you first (or they fear you). That's pretty well established.
