As soon as we start playing it becomes apparent that he has it set on 'faster'. ARG. I'm not used to that, and I was lagging to begin with. Maybe that's what he normally plays on?
You must have been on Diplomacy. Yes, most games are played with the Fast or Faster setting. Faster feels pretty fast when you're first getting used to it. It slows down later in the game once lots of ships are out. The benefit of the faster speed setting is that it reduces the amount of time needed to play a game online, which, when you're talking about games that could last 2 hours, is a concern.
Do note that there are a couple jerks out there, but don't take them seriously and don't let them chase you off the playground. It's a great game once you learn it and can hold your own.
We played for a little while, and I was sort of starting to get used to the speed when I lost my internet connection. I have satellite, and I lose connection every time it rains.
That sucks. Do you live out in the sticks where satellite broadband is your only option? I've always been under the impression that satellite connections get high pings (problem for first person shooters) and just aren't very reliable.
By the way, I think you might find that you'll have a better chance of finding newer players on standard, vanilla Sins. The pro community is playing on Diplomacy.
