How does the military resource sb work?

What does the military resource starbase increase? ship hp? ship defenses and attack? soldiering?

Attack and defence. But until it's upgraded you won't notice it.

If you mean the mining starbase on a military resource, it seems to globally increase hitpoints and attack/defense values.

Without mining mods, it will give a 5% increase, which you may not notice; use mining mods to get more.

If you mean the military starbase, it will give speed, attack and defense value assists to ships in it's radius of power if you equip it with the proper modules.

The "plain" military starbase (that you can create w/out a resource) is invaluable for protecting your fleets. You need to research the Starbase Projection part of the tree, and you get a number of killer things to help support your fleets within the area of effect.

Note: Each item takes a constructor to enable...only enable those things that make sense. eg, if your ships are missle ships, don't upgrade the beam assist and if the enemy is using beams don't upgrade to missle or armor defense.

Just "basic" projection gives you:

1. +3 defense on beams, MD and missles (3 constructors)
2. +1 all around defense (for a total of 4 if you get the #1 thing as well)
3. +1 on attack for each item
4. +1 on speed (called "stellar wake"...you need to have researched propulsion to "warp" drive to get it)

It improves the attack and defence value of ships. You will not notice it until you have good weapons already and 1 or more starbases fully upgraded in the mine catagory.

they are so clutch. especially for the endgame, when each one gives +59% attack AND defense. great for campaign, but i think a bit overpowered for regular game.

with regard to military starbases, i consider them a waste of time outside the campaign.
...unless you like to maintain static borders with warring neighbors.

On higher levels in the normal games just surviving can be difficult untill you manage to establish a good tech edge...unless, you use military starbases to boost your ships. It really can make the differnece between losing ships constantly and winning all the time. Sometimes it might need overlapping bases.
They can also be useful in offensives, especially when you have no true advantage in ships by leap frogging with new bases.

I have some rookie starbase questions?
How effective are upgraded Military SB's at defending themselves against attacking ships?
Can ships be combined with a SB to create a fleet to help defend it?
How much, if any, of the starbase defense modules should I add to non-military SBs?
Any other useful SB tips? or links to said tips?

1 Depends on how powerful the attacker is and how you have placed defensive/offensive modules.

2 No

3 Enough to defend it against the current technology level of your opponents if you think it will be a target. At least put on the basic Attack module so you can put on defensive stuff. Even if the mod is not effective against one type of weapon, it will still add at least 1 to the defensive roll total. (Actually it adds the square of the value).

ex. Defending against a laser atack, 9 armor + 9 PD + 9 Shield = 3 + 3 + 9 = 15 defense total with all 3 typesof modules; Just the shield module will equal 0 armor + 0 pd + 9 shield = 9 defense total.

Add as much attack modules as the opponents defensive technology requires to be effective. Room is not an issue, only your ability to make Constructors. There is room for all modules on each type starbase.
