Random event ideas here...

Well here's some random event ideas we've had that we hope to put into the bonus pak. But we want to hear from you. What kinds of events would you like to see and if they're doable, we'll try to get them into the bonuspak and you'll be able to play them on the day the game comes out.

Here are some of ours:

#1 Galactic Plague. (Odds: 1 in 2000 turns or 1 out of every 5 games played).
A plague hits the galaxy with the effect of slowing population growth each month and slowly starting to actually cause a population crash. When this event occurs, a new technology appears available to all players. If they research it, the plague goes away -- for everyone. But it's very expensive so players can eitehr gamble that an AI player will go and take care of it or they can take care of it themselves.

#2 Ultimate Power. (Odds: 1 in 3000 aka 1 out of every 8 games played).
This is similar to #1 except it has a drastically different effect. A technologys hows up to STOP the ultimate power. For you see, as long as it's active, each month the major civilization that is weakest gets 5 points added each month to one of their 30 abilities. Some of those abilities are pretty meaningless but others are pretty important. So you can sit back and let them become hyper powerful or you can put a stop to it (or an other player can put a stop to it.

Event :

While building homes on a planet you stumble on a big ancient ship, your early inspections on the ship show that it has been a flagship from the ancients.

- Repairing the ship would cost 800bc, you will gain a ship unknown to all races which cannot be built otherwise (must be special :) )

- Sending a science team to it to record data and research certain techs (+5% research bonus on planet)

- The ship takes to much room, demolish it too make more room for our homes!

All choices are neutral ;)

#14 Supernova (a little more realistic one) The sun of one of the majors civs home system destabalized and will go Nova in X years.

#15 Mirage: In a sector of the galaxy a solar system appears, noone knows were it came from. The planets of the system are good (18+). When the first race arrives and disembarks (colonyship) the entire system changes, the once good system of 18+ degrades to more normal levels (12+) and turns into the home system of another race (another event), the colonists are taken slaves by the new race (maybe a new race is possible in 1.1? Minor that is)

#16 Ancient Battlefields: Upon entering a certain area of space the player/ai discovers an enormous amount of debris and wrecks of ships. This was the place were two ancient species had their final battle, the intensity of the battle was so great that when it was over, not one single ship remained. The ancient species could no longer sustain themselves and slowly died out. A random technology can be found here, a powerful technology not in the tech tree. Perhaps it could open a new branch of the tech tree wich was not seen before?

#17 An ancient jellyfish-shaped lifeform appears, it slowly floates trough space, travelling from one system to another draining the lifeforce out of a planet. (not quite like the crystalin entity from ST). the planets effected looses 1 class (18>17, >17>16 and so on) until
it reaches 10, then the creature continues to the next system.

#18 Abandoned spacecraft. On one of the early manned expeditions to space made by the discoverers race, the ship in wich the crew travelled disspeard. Now it has been found again leading to an enormous wave of moral boost through-out the empire.

Ancient Mine Field.
This system is filled with self replicateing mines from a long lost civilization. They destroy any ship that trys to enter.
Effects: The colony ship is lost as is any other that is sent there.

RCMP thought they found BinLadin in Newfoundland but it turned out to be a false alarm.

On closer examination they found

BinDrinking
BinFighting
BinSmoking

but no BinLadin

Prophecy:
A rumor begins predicting { emergence of a monster | discovery of Precursor relics which will yield new technology | start of a terrible plague | recovery of a derelict ship | rise of a messiah } at a certain system in a random number of years. Prophecy has a rather low, but positive, probability of being true. The rumor reaches all civilizations. Actions taken before that time can have certain logical outcomes.

Messiah:
Rumor has it that a youth on some world may be the galaxy's new Messiah. The obvious choices include --
- only observing, not interfering
- subtly trying to 'guide' him in order to ward off any anti-social impulses
- neutralizing him

#19 - Dubya Events, once in a century :
A militaristic leader emerges in the most powerful major power : power goes to war with the weakest minor power of the galaxy near a Galactic resource.
All relations with former allies at -50%, except one that has to be bribed 500bc+.
Only lasts 4 years (expectedly), after that government back to normal

LOL (French humor, now putting double-Adamantium powered armor) ;p

#20 Stable Worm Hole (aka Deep Space Nine)

Two way stable worm hole is found linking two distant parts of the galaxy. Ships entering one side of the worm hole appear instantly at the other side. May only be entered at terminas points.

Allows colonization and conquest activities in distant areas of the galaxy. Gives trade bonus to owner of Space Port at terminas point as it becomes a center of commerce.

Worm hole terminas point may be destroyed (% chance) by Sacrificing a Terror Star.

You'd be surprised how many of these ideas are already in the game as is in one form or other. ;)

I like the idea where the map gets scrambled.

I can imagine you trying to invade or colonize a system to find the system has moved.

#21 Cure for the Common Cold

Extremely rare event with choices along these lines:

1) Free innoculation for all from the gov't (very high moral bonus/very high productivity bonus/high economic penalty)

2) Mandatory innoculation decreed by the gov't with citizens footing the bill (high economic bonus/high productivity bonus/low moral penalty)

3) Some sort of "evil" choice here like gov't elite and military innoculations only or withold cure pending reciprocal military biological application finding. (military and research bonuses and high moral penalty)

This may be too fantastic of an event even in the far off future, though. ;)

#22 Voyager Discovery

Since NASA has lost contact with Voyager completely recently, how about a random event where you find out what happened to it. Maybe even still flying and collecting info! :)

#23 Time Warp

A disturbance in the space-time continuum (you know, the usual) creates a time warp and allows the player to return to a point exactly X turns previously. (whatever value for X is appropriate, I dunno)

This means the player now has the foresight to prevent or anticipate actions that he was not aware of. That would be very cool!

When the event is determined, GalCiv could save the current situation and then have the event "trigger" X turns later.

1. Ancient Scriptures Found - These change the entire races direction of thought and focus. This continues till the player changes everything back manually or stays this way and the player now follows this line of doctrine for the remainder of the game.
2. Traveling Alien Sideshow - This sounds stupid but hear me out. An alien group travels around presenting a circus style show for various planets. Every planet that they visit loses productivity (due to people going to the see the show), but gains in contentment (not sure what aspect of the game that would marry up with).

3. Blueprints Found - Developing an area uncovers old blueprints of a robot design that helps with the overall efficiency of the planets "insert appropriate idea here" Food Production, Ship Production, Research Gains, etc. by a certain %.

4. Family Dynasty Recovered - The people of earth find a long lost history of their forefathers which in turn boosts happiness, and increases reproduction rates for X amount of turns.

OK, enough again for now.

A) Code Broken:
You broke the military code of another empire (or they broke yours) until they research a NEW tech to create a new code, you see EVERYTHING they do as long as you have some sort of spying going on with them at all.

B) Manchurian Candidate:
You (or the alien race this happens to) have secretely been sponsoring a candidate in another civ's senate and THEY WON the SPECIAL ELECTION THIS TURN- so select which party takes control of the alien's civ until the next regular election. (Or this could be a timed event that happens only during the regular election).

I like #16 and #18. Also maybe more events that can happen on planets such as ancient ruins found or strange lifeforms. Maybe have an equal number of planet and space events?

#41
Emergence of new piece of art(Book/scultpture/soundcrystals whatever) in the empire shifts the entire empire towards evil or good, and has influence of empires in the affected empires sphere of influence, shifting those as well. (Rather powerfull book)

#42
emergence of new radical politacal party, stealing votes for the next election

#43
Depression hits the empire, influences both economy AND MORALE, also affects trade and influence.

#44
Captain Jean-Luc Picardelly of the human starship Entreprise averts distaster to Altarian planet - +5 influence and diplomatic bonus when dealing with Altarian empire for the next 10 years.

Hope to see them in the game ;)

Ancient Dread Lord War Machine activates.
Our scientists have discovered an ancient machine that blonged once to a race know as the dread Lords. Unfortionately it awoke and destroy the planet it was found on and is now hunting other planets! We must destroy this machine before it kills us all.

Effect: A special ship once built by the Dread Lords awakes. Its a cross between a Terror Star and an superpowered Ship. Good speed, attack defense and hps and will try to destroy anything it encounters. Including ships, space monsters, freighters and inhabited planets. The ships Ai long ago went insane so it will even destroy its former creators the Dread Lords if they are encountered by it. The only way to stop this is to destroy the ship and the ship should be powerful enough that it will take mant attacks to destroy it.

I agree completly! After I wrote my 5 suggestions I sat here for about 30 minutes thinking, or more exactly, staring at the wall trying to think and all I could come up with is either already in one of the Star Trek episodes or in some of the rpg games I played...

Hmm

Discovery of an Ancient Beacon:

Surveyors mapping a planet discover what appears to be an ancient, sophisticated communications -- or monitoring? -- device. The complexity of the device defies analysis, but your scientists suspect that it could still be made to work...

1- Ignore it?
2- Destroy it?
3- Activate it?

when exploring a piece of space junk a mysterious signal eminates from it with incredible force, it's pointed to outside of the galaxy. Scientist examining the artifact announce it's from the race that seems to have destroyed the precursors. Something very terrible is at hand.

"This thread illustrates how difficult it is to come up with a truely original idea"

Well, I never seen a TBS space game that repositioned your stars or let you replay the last X turns. I thought those were pretty original! ;)

New Life Forms Found
Probes have reported finding highly intelligent, energy-based life forms deep in the turbulent atmosphere of the enormous gas giant Sol VI. We have established communication with these bizarre aliens and our scientists report that study of the energy systems used by these creatures will (either):
a) Boost our research
b) Boost our espionage
c) Boost our weapons and defence
d) All of the above

Warped Space
A spatial anomaly along trade route N has resulted in decreased travel times for freighter N. Scientists are still investigating any health implications that may arise from travel within the anomaly, but for now, we are enjoying doubled revenue from this trade route.

End transmission.

Gamma Ray Bursters which would wipe out all life in a system or systems. They would propagate through space at the speed of light from where they started. You would need a tech to be able to armor a system from the gamma rays' effects.

It might be difficult to implement, but I would like to see this event connected to an issue of the UP, where the Civ's could decide to research the cure together. No?
