Stardock Entertainment and Ironclad Games today unveiled beta-test plans for Sins of a Solar Empire, the companies' innovative "RT4X" strategy game. The companies announced that individuals who pre-order the game at https://www.sinsofasolarempire.com/store for $44.95 or 5 TotalGaming.net tokens will gain access to the beta on March 27, well in advance of the game’s release. The limited-feature beta will initially be single-player only, and will feature a single playable race; its purpose is to help Stardock and Ironclad test the game engine on a wide range of PCs, ensuring maximum compatibility and peak performance of the final product. In the coming months, additional features and updates will be implemented based on players' feedback, in order to ensure the final game meets and exceeds fans' expectations.

Sins of a Solar Empire represents the birth of the RT4X genre, seamlessly blending spectacular tactical combat with grand-scale space strategy. Players must conquer worlds, engage in diplomacy and trade with other civilizations, and use the resources at their disposal to enhance their economy, develop new technology and increase military power. They must then test their mettle on a 3D tactical battlefield, where their ships will fight it out in stunning visual glory.

"We’re thrilled to finally give loyal Stardock and Ironclad fans the opportunity to experience Sins of a Solar Empire themselves" said Brian Clair, Director of Games Publishing for Stardock Entertainment. "Their input and gameplay feedback will ultimately help us deliver an incredibly fun, balanced and stable game later this year."

"When players go to bed after playing Sins we want invading alien armadas, desperate planetary defensives and collapsing intergalactic empires to haunt their dreams. Giving players a chance to help shape Sins as early as possible is critical to this objective and we couldn’t be more excited to get the mission started," said Blair Fraser, Producer at Ironclad Games. Craig Fraser, Creative Director, continued, "The team is finally ready to share a tiny taste of the Sins universe with the world this month. The community’s feedback has always been so important to us in the past and we are really counting on our beta fans to help us make Sins the strategy game they will want to play for years."

Yah, much smaller than anticipated. Though it has one race no campaign no multiplayer, so that has to cut it down a bit, we will get to experience the dynamic music?

The beta is so small because there is a lot of material not included. We restricted the number of features, textures, meshes, music, soundFX, races and so-on. Its just the basics and just the TEC. The full version is much larger and will continue to grow up until release.

I want large PINK boxes used as placeholders just like in the Company of Hero's Beta last summer!

I'm guessing generally what we will see in the beta is the final product (graphic-wise)? I hope this isn't so.

Using placeholders means there are elements that are just filling space until we get around to putting the finished elements in. An example would be the TEC carrier texture - it is not complete so we have a decent, but incomplete placeholder texture in its place. For beta 1 some of the art/graphics are final and some aren't.

Thank you for the speedy response Blair, though I was hoping something more along the lines of "Yes we will continue to spend some time touching up on graphics, even though we will focus more so on other areas of development".

Doesn't hurt to push you guys, right?

Couple quick questions.

Roughly how large do you think the download will be?

Given the number of pre-orders am I going to be downloading at 10 kbps when it gets released? Just trying to figure out which day to take off work, muhahahah .

I vote for bittorrent distribution, makes the most sense (of course make a regular DL available for those without access to open ports for BT)
