Sins Beta 1 - Technical Feedback - *Post Here*

Put your bug/compatibility reports here!

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 1.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 1 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, please install SmartException from the Free Stuff section of Stardock Central and reproduce it (if possible). Send the generated exception to: sinsbugs(at)stardock.net along with a detailed description as outlined above.

If you wish to give us non-technical feedback about Beta 1 (feature requests, gameplay suggestions, etc.), please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=148255

By keeping this information separate, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

Not for the beta, but the final version will.

Odd, I've had no problem getting a quit or continue playing prompt after defeating the last AI.

Weyr - Did you colonize all of the planets & asteroids &/or kill all of the opposing ships?

I haven't tried leaving anything behind, myself, but when everything is colonized and my forces are the only ones left the victory screen comes up fine for me.

can't reproduce this but I was zoomed out and then zoomed in on an enemy trade ship that was charging for a phase jump. It was pointing in one direction but when it jumped it instantly turned 90 degrees and jumped in that direction.

AMD Dual Core Processor 2.2 Ghz
1 Gig Ram
256 Nvidea Geforce graphics card

I have only encountered the following bug once. Whether or not it is reproducible or not, I do not know.

An enemy fleet was approaching one of my systems. I immediately ordered the construction of defenses, which I had neglected for that system. These defenses included a Phase Inhibitor. As soon as the enemy fleet jumped in, their phase drives were disabled, EVEN THOUGH THE PHASE INHIBITOR HAD NOT YET BEEN CONSTRUCTED! However, the bug that concerns me is that once they jumped in, they did not do anything. They just hung there for a while. Then, my rescue fleet jumped right into the middle of the enemy fleet. When they jumped in, my ships bumped into a large number of the enemy ships. The enemy ships did not respond. Rather, those that had been bumped drifted all over the planetary system. Observe the screen shot:

(Enemy is purple)
What is that about?!?!

The Phase Inhibitor bug will be fixed in the next Beta 1 update.

Ok, here are my two issues with SINS:

The game is extemely slow at the beggining of the game. It does (but not often) crash in the beggining, I think it is because of that zoom in "movie" at the beggining. Does anyone know how to disable that?

Sometimes the game will crash and a little popup thingy will come up from the area where the clock is and say "Not enought virtual memory, trying to get more" or something like that. I'll write down exactally what it says next time it happens.

And I'm scared to have the big battles like Multianna puts in her screen shots: with 200-300 ships in one of the fleets because I have a feeling it would blow up my computer (you know what I mean )

I do get a lagspike during that zoom-in, but it never crashed on me.

Not enought virtual memory

increasing your swap space might work there, you're a bit low on RAM. AFAIK the memoty leak problem was solved, and never did this.

Found a problem, Someone must have seen it, but i can't find it being posted here before

When you've researched Basic Crew Training and build a capship, the message box at the top says something like this:

"
[old message]
_____Reached level 2
Construction of Marza completed
"

(the underscores aren't there, but the forum won't take space before words)

Yes, a triple post, because i found something else strange which i can't find reported.

Can anyone explain how the cannon got turned upside down.

For some odd reason, I can't Edit the above post.... here's a screeny of that bug, note the message window, it only occurs when you have researched "Basic crew training"

I've been messing around with cap ships recently (Carriers, more specifically), and I noticed the same thing Alcari is talking about when I create the ships. Also, if you purchase the level ups and set auto-choose abilities on, the ships won't choose new abilities while in phase space, they'll instead wait until they finish the jump. I'm no sure if this was just a random chance or not, but the AI seems really prejudiced against getting the ultimate abilities. Other than that, there were no problems running around the galaxy with 30 Sovas and 100+ squadrons.

The zoom in can't be disabled so far as I know. From what you posted, it sounds like you're running out of memory and the Windows swap file is being prevented from getting bigger (either because you're low on hard drive space or have it set to max out at a certain size).

Ideally, you should get more RAM. You will notice a significant improvement in Windows performance at 2GB RAM, though even 1GB will be good. Failing that, increase the size of your swap file and turn the graphics quality down to save RAM usage.

Yeah, I know I have low RAM and I don't really have the money to get more (nor will my mom let me put some in, which means installation fees...).

I think one time the whole memory message poped up I had a program called Steam running which could've been the cause. The cause also could've been that my sister had alot of programs running on her account.

Does anyone know how much 1GB RAM would be at Staples? (my sister works there so I could get a small discount)
Well, I just checked the Staples website and....

they only have 512 and 256MB!!!

Depending on your PC, memory is installed either in single sticks or pairs. If you know what motherboard or system (i.e., Dell model #) you've got, we can probably look it up.

lord kosc, I will send you a virus that will fry your motherboard if your not careful.
the only reason I havent done so already is because the nuclear fission that would result would probably kill a few million people.

I have a firewall, I'll be safe...

oh, from a lowly hacker maybe. but not from a schematics ninja.

My machine has the following specs :-

Athlon XP 2800+
Windows XP Pro SP2
1GB RAM
250GB Hard drive
GeForce FX5500 with 256MB
Playing the game in 1280 * 768 res

I have noticed that on the Saved Game Load screen and on the Video Options screen, the scrollbars go upwards off the top of my screen. They are not contained in the panels at all. In fact, on the Video Options screen, of the 3 selection panels displayed, only the resolution panel has the scrollbar in the correct place - the other 2 panels do not show a scrollbar, but they are shown externally to the panel.

We'll be publishing a Beta 1 update today. Please post back if these problems persist after the update. (If you can post back with screenshots, that will be helpful too.)

I don't know if this is intend or not. The build panel on bottom right for building(Both defensive and economy) and ships(Frigate and haven't checked capital yet) are in different pattern than the 63 build. I download it twice to be sure it wasn't caused by downloading and still is mess up. For example, used to be for economy build panel first 2 icon on first row would both be mines however it is now capital shipyard and mine. The other mine is where trade post used to be and etc...
