I figured since it is inevitable, I will start a thread to get ideas out on a star wars mod. Who will the sides be? What will the map look like? Units? Tech? etc.

WOW. To be honest, I never once clicked on this topic because I thought it was just people speculating about a possible mod. But this is amazing! EvilleJedi, I have played the HW2 mod and your work is amazing! You are doing a very impressive job (and no doubt dedicating TONS of time) on this mod!

Keep up the good work; I'd love to play sins with Star Wars.

hmmm... i wonder if you could somehow build in a stars gravity well... maybe if you had a colonizable asteroid in there off to the side. Then You could build the star forge orbiting the star! If could be the final tech for the sith or another faction! That would be freakin' sick dude!

Also, you should coom up with cool name for this, like sins wars, or [star]wars of solar empire.

...The star wars mod sounds fine to.

quick update on the status of the mod

if all goes well by the end of the week the first release version will be posted. It looks like it will be around 70mb (mostly texture data for the ships) there are some definite graphical issues because of both the art pipeline and lack of knowledge about the engine.

it will be empire ONLY and missing a few ships, but have the majority hard pointed and for the most part playable with weapons and stats. the main sins races are untouched and I do not plan on 'updating' the stock races myself.

icons, UI images, research, abilities WILL NOT be present in this version.

what I want people to evaluate is the game pacing and combat pacing as well as general balance of ships vs cost and vs each other. (shield mitigation and armor really are not easy to compensate for because of how they work.)

there have been two primary sources of delay in getting this out. 1) documentation on the model pipeline and how to successfully export ships from XSI (this is mostly solved or at least to a acceptable level) This resulted in a delay from release until mid april
2) the tremendous difficutly in finding crash bugs that don't have logs. I have had to add one item at a time using an 8 player AI free for all test and run it for 20 minutes to verify that it doesn't crash and properly uses the units.

both of these things have been very frustrating (and I still have a few outstanding issues)

I have an idea for a third faction. I don't think it has ever been done before (at least not well if it has). It comes from the Legacy era, and if you have read the books, then chances are you bought them for these people. And the lucky winners of the hopeful third faction are.....

The Mandalorians!

I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but basically the Mandalorians are fairly powerful in the Legacy era, having survived Yuuzhan Vong efforts to kill them better than the rest of the galaxy, they being Mandalorians and whatnot. They sign a mutual aid/defense treaty with the Verpine in exchange for advanced Verpine technology, and have lots and lots of beskar, the toughest metal in existence and only found on Mandalore which would have been hidden forever if not for Vong planetary bombardment. Also, they have advanced ship designs courtesy of MandalMotors which combined with beskar = devastating new fighters with the agility of an X-wing and the firepwer and toughness of a B-wing, the Bes'uliik class fighters. And later on Admiral Daala comes back with her fleet, with advanced technology such as metal-crystal phase shifters which liquefy metal and cannot be stopped by shields. An Admiral Daala/Mandalore/Roche axis of conquest cannot be discounted. Ship characteristics would include very strong hulls, decent shielding, slower than average ships, and very powerful guns, many with shield penetrating capabilities, as well as being very expensive. After all, Mandalorians and Verpine technology ain't cheap.

personally I'd not a have problem creating a mandalorian faction, but it would be old republic because they actually were a galactic conquering force and worthy of having a faction. From a practicality stand point I can't waste my time on 2 fighters for a faction unless they have a fleet behind them.

The Mandalorians capability to shift the balance of power in legacy is what makes them important, not the fact that they a have a tremendous amount of firepower (and honestly if they had that capability I would rather see them just wipe from history all of the EU written since The Unifying Force in the timeline.) Honestly the mystique of the mandalorians in the present era was ruined by focusing on them (and catering to fans rather than writing a sensible plot.)

the problem with the phase shifters is that they only work at point blank range (read the actual description in the book about how they are used) they are really nothing more than a 'dues ex plot loophole OMG I can't write without mandogasm' reason to reintroduce daala who in every way should have been left in retirement. They also don't 'liquify metal' they weaken the crystalline structure so that it becomes very brittle.

when I saw 'sky captain and the world of tomorrow' I whispered to a friend in the show 'the only thing that could make this movie more stupid is if dinosaurs showed up' and guess what, 2 minutes later they did. that's exactly what I felt when Daala showed up.

Wait you mean in the latest Legacy of the Force book? Yeah I thought it was kind of stupid. Pellaeon was a cool old fart though... he should've called the Chiss or something. Not Daala. I actually sort of like the Legacy of the Force, I just wish that someone besides Daala had shown up like some Sith person or something but I guess Daala really was the only logical choice for them to make him call.

So you have a Republic race and an Empire race? Or only an Empire race?

In the future, it would be extremely cool to have a mod with the Old Republic, the Sith, and the Mandalorians. I'm not sure what you'll do about Mandalorian capital ships, as they never were ones to waste away on capital ships, but it would still be cool. What do you think EvilleJedi?

depending on time, effort and future changes to build limitations there would be the following races

Empire/remnant
Alliance/NR/GA
Republic
Separatists
Sith/mandalorians
Unaligned forces
Vong

the republic is the tough one, all of the other factions have a short histroy or very few ships to begin with, the republic has a decent amount of stuff from the KOTOR eras and then in the clone wars, still have to figure that one out. This is a lot of work to get to this point (lots of importing and bug fixing as well as a handful of new models and textures that I need to put together) and it REQUIRES IronClad to change some things about how the build queues are handled.

as for the current upcoming release I have discovered the problem and it is the nebulon-b, to speed release I will omit it from the build menu (not a big loss)

for testing I have run a large 8 player galaxy with 8 AI players at 8x speed multiple times and it doen't crash so I think it is stable enough to play. I may release on the 21st or the 23rd depending on the time I have.

for the mandalorians they have the basilikan battleships as well as the Mandalorian Dreadnaught

Kedalbe battlecruiser and IMO the Aggressor Cruiser so they would have at least a few large ships, nothing spectatualy large though, but neither would the sith they would be paired with, but they would have lots of completely awesome abilities.

I downloaded the mod....Started up the game.......activated the mod...played game....
AND WAS TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY BY WHAT I EXPERIENCED.
EvilJedi, you, and all who helped you, get the standing ovation...

This mod is VERY impressinve. It brought a tear to my eye piloting a STAR DESTROYER around space, with Tie Fighters in tow....Stunning doesn't even describe it...
