I like Sup Com, but i dont think the game warrants a sequel. I still think Total Annihilation is superior even though both games are almost identical. However being a general RTS fan, and since they are making a sequel i'll more than likely get this one too. Just hope my old computer can run it, because i cant afford a new one anytime soon

Yes, the E6600 is a great buy. It can pretty much chug through anything SupCom throws at it (unless you try playing against 7 Supreme AIs on one machine...the game slowed down to about a tenth its normal speed before crashing... ). For me, the only real cap on the game is my graphics card (GeForce 7900 GS), but I can run it on high fidelity settings and get awesome results, though it does tend to slow every now and then...hopefully as the patches continue, the game will be further optimized (a big patch released not too long ago tinkered with more sensitive stuffs pertaining to unit pathfinding, with positive results), and the stand-alone title will help this situation even more, even if it's for a price...

I'd recommend if we're going to keep talking about your computer, though, that we make a separate thread out of it. Don't want to hijack this fair forum, now do we?

Just an FYI, but in Windows XP there is a 2GB "cap" on the size most programs are allowed to be. MadBoris, over in the SupCom forums, created a "patch" that lets you violate that limit for SupCom. Which is needed when playing with lots of units...

yes, but its a dangerous little patch. I wish I had the courage and expertice to work with it.

And you're far more likely to hit the 2GB limit with Vista 32 bit than in XP. Unless you get Vista 64 bit than XP is the better bet.

I dont want supcom to crash on me, is this really the only way to fix that 2gig glass ceiling? damn...

Dangerous? Maybe I should go back and look at it closer... do you mean the fact that you have to fiddle with OS startup stuff?

The cap is on program size, not total memory use. So I could have 4 1.5GB programs running safely... its just that they won't run very fast because they're on pagefile.

You could go with a 64 bit edition of windows instead, if you wanted

yes...

1) I bought the OS before knowing there was a difference, mostly because I heard three different people saying "it doesnt matter", pff... way to go
2) isnt the 64x one drastically more expensive...?

maybe I'll try the patch, but if I get confused I'm backing way off immediately. I wont crash my brand new system because I got greedy.

If you buy retail Vista, you get both 32-bit and 64-bit. There shouldn't be a price difference between 64-bit and 32-bit Vista if you go OEM. Biggest issue with 64-it OSes currently has to do with their drivers.

64-bit XP is around the same price as XP Professional in both retail and OEM.

Alright, i got SupCom but didn't work, my b-day is soon n been asking for a new rig and ill pay for some. I thought the demo would work, and that didn't even work. They better lower the requirements...or else (i'll do nothing but still). If they want to reach the widest market possible LOWER THE REQUIREMENTS!!!

not what the case says, the case says I have 32-bit.

GPG is pulling a very non-standard market strategy (one that is a hundred shades opposite of IC's). they are not at all catering to as many possible clientelle as possible, they are garunteeing that RTS fanatics (and possibly just game-fanatics) will buy their game. I have to say, damn, its worked.

And so did my OEM version, but you can still install the 64bit version with the same key.
Just dont type in a key during the install, then you will get the option to choose.

My bad, I checked and seems retail for Home Premium (and probably Home Basic) doesn't include both DVDs. You should still be able to order the media according to places like NewEgg. Your license applies for either 64- or 32-bit like Multianna says. Retail for Vista Ultimate includes one DVD each for 32-bit and 64-bit.

I got home basic (no need to buy extra gadge-a-gidgetry). you sure that entitles me to 64 bit as well? if so how do I get it?
Yeah, according to this, you're also entitled to the 64-bit version. I found this link for ordering the 64-bit media.

so is there a place online I can get the vista 64 bit? if you find that I would SERIOUSLY appreciate you sending me a message with the link

additionally how can I verify that my parts are 64 bit worthy? which parts should I be worried about?

SupCom- when it comes to making races everything goes back to STARCRAFT (as with Sins...). The UEF is the terran, Cybran the Zerg, and Aeon the Protoss. Anyone else agree? I mean companies say we only put three (or four) races in so we can develop them. I say put in six or seven instead of three and develop those too. More options, more people to buy it; do i hear expansion??? Anyone agree??

normal sized text and you might get a useful reply and or agreement with your thoughts...

Anyway, 3 has been the standard, heck COH got away with 2, since the game was soo good many didn't even care there was only 2.

The vista DVD you are getting, contains all the versions of vista.

When you get asked to put in a key (which is on the cd case) you press later or what ever it says, just dont put in the key until you are finished with the installation.

When you skip the key, you can choose between all the versions, just make sure you you choose the one you brought but with 64bit. Dont choose ultimate or other version, as your key properly wont work.

thank god, you're a lifesaver.

but how do you know if your parts are compatable?

hey... you're the guy from the supcom forums, aren't you?

there is plenty of reason to have only a few races, but mostly its just precedence.

The only part you really have to worry about, IIRC, is your processor. And processors have been 64 bit for a while now. I know the athlon 64's are, and I do believe the core 2 duo's (and even core duos) are, too.

I talked extensively about it with a computer technician, and I'm sticking with 32bit. from what I hear most applications dont recieve any benefit, 32 bit systems run slower on it and it cannot even run 16 bit apps (not that it concerns me) I'll just carry through with the original 32bit vista.

It's natural to ground any game in the 'real' world with a human race. It helps people relate to the game circumstance and sets a benchmark for the other races. Adding a second race with unique abilities, strengths and weaknesses adds much more interest to gameplay. A third race furthers this differentiation and creates unique interplay between the three. Beyond this point the cost of development, content, texture space, etc can quickly escalate. In the case of SINS, the most important reason has little to do sci-fi history or development cost - there are only 3 races is this storyline!
