Universe Design and Hyperspace II - traversing the well

Skipping stones

How about leaving everything as is, but just either make the gravity wells larger or the units all slower and be able to jump to adjacent territories from anywhere on the periphery of the well.

This would work such that you still had to stop in well b on the way from a to c, but the stop was just to cool down and wait for the antimatter to replenish, ie in a situation trying to go a->b->c because a->c doesn’t exist, you charge the jump in a, jump to b, wait for antimatter return in b, charge in b, jump to c. Units or fleets transiting through b could be attacked while they were traversing but wouldn’t have to traverse all the way across the gravity well to get to the other "side." In this scenario and generally, how about increasing the time required to charge a jump?

What you describe sounds very similar to the way it was in early beta 1. Phase jumps were subsequently limited to an area near the lane-end because otherwise it's far to easy to circumvent any defenses or fleets in intermediate locations. When you have to actually fly through the well to the other side, there's a better chance for the owner to mount some resistance.

I have to agree with kryo on this one. Haveing to transit through a gravity well gives the person who is trying to control that well a chance to kill enemy ships passing through it. It sounds like you have a problem with how long it takes your ships to make 2+ jumps. I think the best bet to increase the speed you can move fleets is to:
a) give all ships a flat speed increase
b) make some tecs that increase speed for certain/all ships like we currently have for the tuning speed on capital ships.
or c) implement a "all power to engines" function you can enable while you are moving the fleet. It could decrease/shut off weapons or shields so you can move faster.

D) Some kind of tactical structure that "assists allied movement" might be nice, too...

V) have some sort of gravity slingshot option where your ships fly around the edge of the gravity well while accelerating.

(even if you cut the acceleration out, I would still like to have this option so I dont have to micro in order to dodge the Gauss')

Well I think the ships should be smart enough to dodge stationary deffences, but yes...that would be a nice addition.
