Suggestion: Bounty on the heads of the pirates!

One thing that always irked me is that you don't get any money for killing pirates. I mean, let's face it; pirates are hated by everybody. Even though you'll happily raise the bounty on someone to encourage pirates going for them (possibly instead of you), you'd also be elated to see them hung. And so would the trade guilds within your empire.

So my suggestion is to make pirate ships worth a bounty - perhaps the scuttle cost of the ship type, in credits only? Not only would it make sense, it would make the mass pirate suicide swarms more bearable.

Downside: Okay, thirty pirates are invading my sytem, stupidly flying into my guns.
Upside: That's gotta be about 2,300 credits worth of pirate booty!

This may be a problem. They will stupidly fly into your guns and you get the booty for free... Suddenly everybody will WANT the bounty on thir own head to spawn the pirates.

I don't think they should represent a source of money.

How about making a new race that attacks trade routes of everyone and call them pirates, while renaming the current "pirates" to bounty hunters. If you are a small empire, when thay attack, you might loose (X) amount of a fairly common rasource (usually). However, if you are a large empire, you lose (x) amount of a rarer resource (usually). You could then pay extra resources to have defenses for your trade routes, and if those defences kill a pirate ship, you get the amount of resources for that ship if it were skuttled, plus extra credits from the government(s) is that particular pirate was notorious. Creating the new pirate race ships shouldn't be too hard, just slightly retexture different ships from different races to look more beat up and used for piracy.

Oh, and the Downside/Upside:

Downside: I just lost three ships flying the trade route from system (X) to system (X)

Upside: For the last 3 months, these pirates have been wrecking havok here there, and everywhere, wracking up a nice bounty for thier heads from 6 dirrent races/governments, and now, they seem to regularly attack this trade route. Hello 4,500 credits from 6 different people.

personally, I hope they put this in, but they may not want to program trade route attacks, and may need to change how trade routs work, which could take too long to allow other needed changes to the game before its realease.

I will agree, I wish my trade routes were attacked more, as it stands I don't think I've ever yet lost a single trade ship...

pirates pirates pirates everywhere. their attacking, defending, and hiding.

i think we need to look at the pirates.

1 the pirates that are defending grav wells aren't pirates. they are small radical groups that are willing to die to defend their home.

2 the pirates that are attacking are not pirates their privateers. even then their not playing the role right.

3 true pirates are after profit. so when they attack a system they would head for the planet and the resources. grabbing what they can(depending on the size of their ships} and then retreating. these types of pirates would be immune to the phase jump inhabiter.

4 the end tech for the radicals these people would fight to the death just because.

5 privateers are payed to disrupt income and destroy ships. they would come in with lots of ships and destroy what they could and retreat before being wiped out. you can't spend it if your dead.

and as i said in another thread these 4 groups need to marked differently. so you know what you are dealing with. if you want to keep them gray then use different flags.

ie white skull and crossbones for pirates and foreign privateers. red skull and crossbones for domestic privateers. and such.

You could solve this tidily. When you kill the pirates, the money comes out of the bounty against you.
