Sins Beta 3 - Technical Feedback *POST HERE*

Sins Beta 3 - Technical Feedback *POST HERE*

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 3.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 3 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c
  • LAN or Broadband Internet Connection for Multiplayer

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, Sins should automatically generate a minidump file. Please send the generated exception and a DirectX diag report to support(at)ironcladgames(dot)com along with a detailed description as outlined above. Minidump files are located in (please note these directories are hidden by Windows):

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire
Vista: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

If you'd like to give us some non-technical feedback, please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=163062

By keeping this information in one place, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

Sync bug with skyboxes is fixed, looking into all the other multiplayer issues. Thanks for the reports guys, it helps a lot even if we don't respond a lot over the next few days (busy trying to fix stuff )

busy trying to fix stuff

cough cough, busy trying to kill me

Anyway, the start up sequence needs to be worked on -- my game was paused for a long time while I waited for it to start, and I had no feedback on why my controls weren't working. Either give the player feedback or blank out the screen with a "waiting for other players" message (so they don't get a jump on the competition with their stuff getting started quicker).

Other people are on the fixes. I had n00bs to skool!!! Agreed, it needs a "waiting for other players to load" screen

Quite a few of us have been having problems with dual networking cards being unable to host. Sins seems to be listening to the wrong network card. I disabled my 2nd network card in control panel, and I could host.

Thanks for figuring that out. We'll add this to the FAQ until we have a solution.

To clarify Nanite's comment, Sins binds to a specific network IP address, taken from one of your network cards. For example, here's my ipconfig output:

Code: a
  1. TCP 192.168.10.20:139 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
  2. TCP 192.168.10.40:139 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING

When I run Sins, it binds to the 192.168.10.40 address:

Code: vb
  1. TCP 192.168.10.20:139 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
  2. TCP 192.168.10.40:139 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING

However, my router is configured to forward to 192.168.10.20. To resolve this I disabled the 192.168.10.40 interface. The next time I started Sins, it bound to 192.168.10.20 and everything started working.

This should be fixed in Sins so that it binds not to a specific IP address, but to the special address 0.0.0.0, which means that it accepts connections coming in from any network interface. Here's an example entry from netstat:

Code: vb
  1. TCP 192.168.10.20:139 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
  2. TCP 192.168.10.40:139 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING

Alternatively, Sins can bind to multiple addresses, once for each network interface:

Code: vb
  1. TCP 192.168.10.20:139 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
  2. TCP 192.168.10.40:139 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING

Windows XP SP2
Intel Quad Core Extreme 6700
2GB RAM
Asus 7950GT
DirectX 9.0c
Broadband

I've encountered the same issue a few times with the Akkan Battlecruiser - Normally when being followed (Not sure if it matters or not, Just when I noticed it.) The battlecruiser will hault it's move order and the units following will catch up to it, only then will the battlecruiser proceed with it's move order.

Could it be related to the zoom functions? Did you try and click on a planet in the Empire window?

Hi gang - Thank you for all the great feedback!  This is helping us a lot to track down and fix the various issues people have been having.

I have another bug: KRYO LOST TO EET!

But I beat kosc, so that makes it better

Personally I've had some annoying issues with zooming so far (probably related to the varying heights of planets). Even in zoom-to-center-screen mode, the zoom often 'stops' at an arbitrary height, and won't go further without focusing on something, or it keeps going way past the plane.

I get that exact issue too. It forces me to select a ship to zoom in to, when I want to view combat in detail.

Check the FAQ, sounds like your friend needs to open up some ports on his router.

I noticed a camera bug. It seems that icons are always drawn in front of 3d models, even when they are behind in game. So when you move the camera so that you look at a planet, you see the icons of the ships behind the planet in front of the planet. This looks very odd, and is probably a bug. Models behind models works fine, and so do icons behind icons.

THE LOBBY!!!
There are some features that I would like to see for the lobby:
A) Allowing players to see ALL games being played.
B) Highlight or remove players (from lobby) that are in a game.
C) Being able to see/use the lobby chat after creating a game. After all its hard to COAX peeps into a game if you cant talk with them or see them.

kryo and Novaburst: good call on that one - having set the planets off the plane caused some badness with the regular focus camera - looking into it now.

I posted this before, it is sort of a bug.

I have a pentium four

and 1.5 somethings of ram

AND IT LAGS!!!!!!

I did everything I could, turned off all special effects, set the comp to work as optimly as possible, now it only lags when I zoom.

I shudder to think what will happen on something greater than a 1v1.

one time, during a lag, I hit ctrl+alt+delete, and it said sins was using only half my procesor (HW almost used the whole thing)

so it is not my processor, and my ram is three times the limit you set for the game.

anything I could do to keep it from lagging so much?
were you playing online? In which case your internet speed is infintely more important than your processor.
no, it was offline, a 1v1 on small-random

Ok I already have a problem that is probably of my own creation. Im running a dual Opteron 2.0 system 4 GB ECC Corsair XMS ram 3200 and a 7950GT Nvidia card Evga. Windows XP Pro. My problem is that the game started fine. I go to options and select 1680 x 1050 resolution, I play all my games in this resolution eg: Supreme Commander, WoW, Galactic Civs II, Overlord, Vanguard, the list can go on. Well anyways once the game adjusted it just errors out to screen. Of course I sent in a few feedbacks per the beta error log. I uninstalled and will reinstall and try again but is there a way that I can check to get the original resolution. I have a sneaking suspicion that the ECC ram will not like this game. HoMM V is the only other game I can think of that also didnt like my system. Never played it because of that fact.

You using the newest beta drivers from nivida and there "hotfixxes" that are supposed to fix alot of errors.

Recommend doing these steps and see if it helps.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/windows_vista_hotfixes.html

Though its listed as the 2nd thing, install the drivers first then do the hot fixxes.

Wow- SO I had this error afte B2's last update... After Playing Sins, any video I watch on any program medium will be completely discolored, screwed up contrast.... usually can't see anything but a few bits of red or blue. Restarting fixes this until the next time I play Sins.

Newest Nvidia Drivers actually makes this vid issue permenant!
I have a Nvidia Geforce 7950
