Sins Beta 3 - Technical Feedback *POST HERE*

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 3.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 3 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c
  • LAN or Broadband Internet Connection for Multiplayer

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, Sins should automatically generate a minidump file. Please send the generated exception and a DirectX diag report to support(at)ironcladgames(dot)com along with a detailed description as outlined above. Minidump files are located in (please note these directories are hidden by Windows):

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire

1) When you kill some enemy fleet units with a bounty it subtracts from their bounty score. This bounty score gets reported to you as an increase in the bounty in the audio.

also shows it on the text in the lower left

3) I saw units moving out to jump to the next system appear to fly further out than the jump limit circle. It appeared the units had a wider circle that was I was viewing. This was in an asteroid system.

happens quite a bit in all types of planets/roids

5) When giving a fleet an order to coordinate the jump any unit that was not in the same system as the fleet (new units being built with the fleet as a rally point but not yet arrived) would not respect the order and would individually jump.

people have complained about that both ways. "why have my fleet wait for another ship to jump two star systems just so they can jump!?"

8) The auto placement of structures sucks - especially for the Gauss defenses. They get clustered behind the planet.

thats why you shouldnt auto place, lol

I don't know if this has been mentioned but i always get a hanged system around 10 minutes in the game. The problem is im getting insane amounts of fps and my card overheats. GalCiv2 fixed this with having an option for frame rate throttling. I need to have vsync on to play it without hanging at the moment.

I keep getting a wierd crash.

whenever I try to play multiplayer over the internet, right when the game starts, I get a sync, and the sins crashes.

this happen a few times, I got a mini-dump for it, I think I sent it in....

it is realy wierd, and getting on my nerves, givin I want to play online.

fyi my computer only lags for 1/4 second every 4 seconds when I play with 200 planets, so it has nothing to do with computer power.

Is that bug still around?
- Idle ships doesn't attack 0 health structures, ie. structures just placed by the player/AI in the grav well for building.

Actually, you aren't supposed to be able to attack those structures at all -- something about it being silly to "knock out the 'building coming soon!' signs".

- Sova carrier uses Embargo while it's in plasma storms. Duh? It should only use Embargo on auto-cast if it's in a grav well under enemy control, IMO.

Yeah, I had it embargo an uncolonized asteroid earlier this day, while clearing out the local milita.

people have complained about that both ways. "why have my fleet wait for another ship to jump two star systems just so they can jump!?"

How about the "why did those stupid light frigates jump out one by one instead of waiting for the cap ship behind them and then go all at once?" That "mistake" cost me.

The problem is im getting insane amounts of fps and my card overheats.

Um, that sounds more like a card issue than anything else...

Yes the problem with the card is that its too much for the game.
Anyway, in the early versions of galciv2 brad wrote a whole developer report on this, all you need is to limit the fps.

Gee, then why don't I have the problem with an 8800GTX?

Tried to play my first couple of multi-player games through Ironclad. We couldn't complete the games. Lots of lag for all players in the game. One player was lagging out and I would get the popup about booting him because of lag. That lag popup window needs to be fixed because it's modal and I can't dismiss it without booting the player. Even with two players it was still lagging enough that we could not continue the game. Very slooow to the point of being unplayable.

I played an online game yesterday with two humans against 3 AIs. I suppose it was my computer, more specifically my old GF 4400 Ti card, but the game lagged quite a bit.

also, for a game as long as sins is, I would like an option of handing control of ships and planets over to allies. I expected a 1 - 2 hour game and ended up playing over 4 hours and though I did enjoy it, at some point I just had to go. and in a team game, its very embarassing and uncool to leave them. luckily it was a mutual decision, as we more or less won the game anyhow.

also, chat with players from and into the game would be cool.

and, a chat log with all the messages in the game would be nice. you can see the past few msg when you press enter, but there are surely situation where a more complete protocoll would be welcome.

I think for most of these stuff I should point to warcraft III where the whole chat and game lobby thing was done really well imo.

When you have the chat box active, you can put the cursor over it and scroll back with the wheel.

interesting, I need to check that. but for following or even searching conversation a larger window would be interesting, assuming it stays the size of those 3 - 4 lines. in particular the space where msg are displayed could be a bit broader.

but thanks for bringing it to my intention, I didn't think that it would be implemented that way.

edit: on a side note: updating the grafics drivers on my notebook cleared the problem with the mouse cursor icon that would not move anymore, but still enable me to control stuff (I had to guess where my mouse was).

Well i see alot of you covered most of things i have seen as well. Here's a few more.

Easy Ai tends to stick to one system in a 1 on 1 basis, but not when its 2(AI) or more on 1.

On medium i noticed that the AI will tend to go after your planets very quickly and just leave. sometimes they took over, sometimes they just left. Found it kinda odd.

I also noticed that you can take over the pirates asteriod with culture but not asteriods that just have a local milita.

Sometimes i get fighters/bombers that are stuck in build mode. Carrier only launches all but the last one and you see it cycling like its launching. Twice i had a mass of bombers launch in the next system right after this happened and the count was at least twice that of what i can hold in my entire fleet. Count returned to normal after i jumpped to the next system.

Getting pauses while in MP games but not in SP. Maybe an issue with packets/buffers/routers/firewalls/AV's?

Pirates much more challenging to fight than EASY AI but weaker than Medium AI. They should at least launch 1 capital ship at you in medium settings.

Random planets? A few times i've gotten one planet that was suppose to be actually be ice be arid, and one arid planet actually be ice.

sometimes the colony ship gets stuck at a planet its trying to colonize but thinks the planet is hostile.

Insta-build for the Sova seems broken; I've noticed this in as many as three separate games. I had the ability activated while my bombers were hitting Garda's, unwise I know but nothing else was there, and the squadrons just kept shrinking and losses weren't replaced instantly like claimed.

Is there anyway that will soon be developed to have more people be able to host bceause unless certain people are online no one can play!
I never received any response to my earlier bug report.

I am seeing that the mouse wheel always performs a 'zoom out' no matter which way I roll the wheel. Any ideas?

Have those people opened port 6001 as directed in the FAQ?

I think I found a crash bug in the game. I've been playing a very large galaxy (20 stars, 400 planets) and I've just about cleaned out my own starsystem. I have a scout looking around in a neighbouring starsystem, and when I zoom out I can already see a few planets in that starsystem. When I move my mouse over one of these planets, the game crashes.
I've been able to get this crash a few times now in this large game, but I haven't been able to try it out in a smaller galaxy (will try to do this this evening after work).
I've already mailed the minidump and the savegame to Ironclad.

Is there any particular reason the three first splash screens aren't running in 1280x1024 if that's the resolution you set the game at?

It causes the splash screens to be stretched on the LCD for starters not that it's very noticable, but what really annoys me is the hiccup/sound distortion when it switches to the Main Menu and puts resolution at 1280x1024.

While playing a multiplayer match resumed from an autosave (PoorManDSO accidentally closed the window), neither of us got any audio notifications about pirates or bounties after resuming.

Hi,

My saved game is crashing just after it finishes loading. I tried making a new game, that worked fine, so it seems like a corrupt saved game file. Just posting the bug here, but I've emailed the dump file, my dxdiag.txt and the saved game file itself to [email protected]. In any case, its very reproduceable, all you have to do is try to load that saved game file

I've been able to try this in a random medium galaxy yesterday, but that seems to work fine, I'll try some more things and I'll keep you all informed...

I have another bug: KRYO LOST TO EET!

Thats no Bug, its a FEATURE

But Ive found some BUGs while making a own Map:

map code
Screenshot1
Screenshot2
Screenshot3

As you can see, some Planets arent on the same Z Axis Level, but i dont know why.
Scouts with Scouting Ability on have Problems finding their way to those Planets, they fly only in that direction till they disappear like Heroine4Life problem which he posted here before.

Second Bug was really really annoying, if you set up a Starsystem without any Planet to colonize, but with Homeplanets, the game wont start. Ive made a test System with 2 Nebulas 2 Homeplanets and 1 Sun, it didn’t load, it didn’t crash, Sins stoped and you’ve got no chance to get out of it. My System runs but I cant get out of the Game ….

Please Ironclade, Pimp My Map

Edit:
by the Way your clock shows the wrong time... its 9.39 here tststststs
Ah.....
the two Options
metersPerGalaxyUnit
pixelsPerGalaxyUnit
seems to change the Z Axis Problem, I dont know if both change it or only one of them...
didnt figured it out how they change and why they change that Problem

Speaking about sound. I doesn't see it here mentioned, but lots of players in multi player matches doesn't have sound at all. No effects, no warnings, no nada.

In single player sound works, in multi it doesn't.

You answered your own question....

Z-axis positions are randomized to break things off from the 2d plane a little more. Scouts flying off into deep space at sublight is another issue.
