Sins Beta 3 - Technical Feedback *POST HERE*

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 3.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 3 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c
  • LAN or Broadband Internet Connection for Multiplayer

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, Sins should automatically generate a minidump file. Please send the generated exception and a DirectX diag report to support(at)ironcladgames(dot)com along with a detailed description as outlined above. Minidump files are located in (please note these directories are hidden by Windows):

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire
Vista: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

If you'd like to give us some non-technical feedback, please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=163062

By keeping this information in one place, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

Stop command doesn't let you stop ships -- it only cancels non-movement orders and phase jumps, in-system movement continues.

Edit:

On multi-system transit routes, fleets don't move at the speed of the slowest ship even when the jump together mode is selected -- frigates wait a little while, then jump out one-by-one instead of waiting for the flagship.

My damn space elevators still disappear after loading save games.

I have attempted to reload a saved game that I started after I patched to beta 3 and just like in beta 2 the game froze(the music keeps playing though) after 1 sec upon loading. No mini-dump file was created b/c I was forced to end the process. I did notice that the game was taking up A LOT of physical memory, over 1 GB of memory, but no CPU time. Do you want me to reproduce the error again and let it sit until it errors itself out and hope that it creates a mini dump?

It sounds like a bug we fixed in a new patch

Boy I hope/wish you were refferring to my space elevators...

Don't know where I should put this, but it seemed more technical then game-play... I think for those of us who make maps it would be useful if we could define new planet types In the Map File for use in the Map; this way we could share special maps with special homeworlds and such without modding the core Galaxy scenario definitions.

Im finding that I could make some really great small scale skirmish maps where one or two locations holds an enoumous investment/resource asteroids. Small distances/High Resources isn't really possible without modding a few new planets in.

That or give us a full map editor.

I noticed that some planetary upgrades activate before completion. For instance I upgraded my logistics and was able to build more structures well before it was even underway (I had other upgrades in progress at the time).

Also, a technical issue, if I listen to windows media player while playing the game i get corrupted (static) sound. I only mention this as it is the first game that I have had issues with this in years.

Post patch; still no space elevators. I have replicated this on another machine too. I have no idea what is causing it. I have updated the drivers to no avail.

BTW, as of this patch multiplayer has gone from suffering severe "slowdown" lag (yay that thats gone) to an exceedingly annoying command lag. I give a command, and 2-3 seconds later the command occurs. Whether its building a ship, selling resources, or an attack command, it takes forever to give an order. But this does not apply to "internal" checks (not enough resources to build that ship... even though I just clicked sell metal to be able to afford it), telling me that this isn't a local problem. I'm guessing that every command has to go to the host and back, which I don't particularly mind, just let my system "pretend" to have gotten the response, especially for stuff like selling resources and queuing construction.

When joining a game in the new patch, the map image and details didn't show up in the waiting room for me unless I was the host.

The pirate's Cutthroat uses the wrong model. Picture and icon is from a pirate LRM, but the model's a pirate siege frigate.

It works this way with research, too. For example, if you queue a research of a new ship hull, you'll be able to queue production of the new ship right away before the research completes. But as far as I can tell, the production (ships/buildings) itself doesn't start until the research is done. Are you saying that planetary structures begin to build while the planetary upgrade is researching?

I believe I read somewhere that all pirate ships are placeholders anyway and will be replaced by unique models. But don't quote me on that.

Is this as frequent (read: constant) as the other type of lag before the patch?

Upgrade to the latest version. We put out a "hotfix" late yesterday to address this issue.

This would have been fixed indirectly by the 2nd patch yesterday.

I dont think its a exactly a bug, but after the patch loading times seem to much longer and even when fully loaded the game takes about a minute or two before I can do anything (which it didn't to any notable extent before). this was sp, it happened in the one game I tried in mp, but I think that was more a connection or hosting issue, as it happened to the other participants as well.

I'll post if it changes with more games, but for now I thought you should know.

edit: scratch that one. after the patch the settings returned to highest which my old computer couldnt handle. switched back to something more reasonable and it works nicely now.

did get an error when I tried to join a save gamed play, sent the report.

Fine then, quote me on that:

Pirate ships are currently placeholders, TEC units copied and then given different names. New graphics / ships are to be added.

The only lag I got prior to the patch was everything running really slowly. Excruciatingly so. No real command lag, like I'm getting now.

Please note that I'm 99% sure I have both of yesterday's patches -- I got home after both were released, and reinstalled the game completely.

Just installed the update. Fired up a fresh SP game. Changed my empire color to red and when the game starts I am always green.

There is an option to polarize colors by "friendly/hostile", rather than empire. Your phase lanes still show the right culture color, right?

You are absolutely correct. I had checked 'Team Colors'. Forgive my newness with the game and many of the options. I will frequently have what probably seems like obvious questions.

Thanks for a speedy reply!

Are you still getting command lag? I played a game yesterday and didn't have either type. Prior to the patch I was getting the everything slow lag in every game, yesterday's was pretty much lag free except for a handful of brief pauses over the whole course of the game. Granted I was hosting, but before the patch if I hosted I'd still get slowdown lag

Well, slowdown lag was based on all computers going slow -- if your hosting, that may be enough to avoid the command lag, since it doesn't have to travel anywhere to get processed, ok'd, or whatever it is thats slowing down commands.

Oh, and btw, scout ships need their auto-scout AI reworked. They'll go off and scout a planet on the other side of the map from the unexplored one their right next to. No apparent rhyme or reason.

I still get weird bloom issues in beta 3.

I've a an Ati Radeon 9800 Pro with 256 Mb of video RAM. Drivers are version 8.411.0.0 (the newest I'm able to download).

The cutting in the lower left is not a bug. Haven't finished the texture yet. The bloom also happens in the unmodded game.

The bloom is especially strong in a small area. It looks like I've got some sort of flashlight.

Hello,

Has anyone had this problem? After installing beta 3 and selecting a galaxy size, when I start to play all I can get is one system. Tried all different sizes but I always end with only one system. The other races can come into my system but I cannot get out. And there is no connecting line to the other systems.

Thanks

What do you mean by selecting a galaxy size?
