Sins Beta 3 - Technical Feedback *POST HERE*

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 3.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 3 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c
  • LAN or Broadband Internet Connection for Multiplayer

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, Sins should automatically generate a minidump file. Please send the generated exception and a DirectX diag report to support(at)ironcladgames(dot)com along with a detailed description as outlined above. Minidump files are located in (please note these directories are hidden by Windows):

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire
Vista: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

If you'd like to give us some non-technical feedback, please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=163062

By keeping this information in one place, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

A common error is to assume the ip numbers in the example are literal. You may need to run ipconfig to determine your LAN ip and forward to that instead of the example ones.

hey, how do you minimize your interface. i have mines almost covering my whole screen.

i'm reffering to heroine's screen shot. his interface is not the same as mines. mines really does cover my screen like thrawns screen shot.

can you guy's please tell me how to where i can minimize interface (not window's mode)?

I'm having some trouble with connecting online with Sins.

I block access to the internet with Symantec Norton Internet Security. When an unrecognized program connects to the internet I get a popup box from Norton describing the connection and asking if I should allow it. After a couple of clicks the application connects and goes about it's business while Norton quiets down.

This problem occurs when I run a new version of Sins and connect to Ironclad Online. Sins freezes up when running full screen and I never see the dialog box from Norton. The Norton dialog box is there but Sins is full screen and won't let the dialog box appear. I have to shut down Sins, change Sins to run in window mode, then try to connect to Ironclad Online. When Sins is in window mode the Norton dialog box pops up successfully. I reply and Sins logs in and connects to Ironclad Online. Then I configure Sins to go back to run in full screen mode which will be ok until the next update to the Sins program.

Could you make the Sins program (when in full screen mode and connecting to Ironclad Online) not 'hog the screen' which would allow the Norton dialog box to pop up so I can reply to it?

Thanks!

Normally I don't have any trouble going to desktop in game -- the only time I have trouble is the initial loading sequence, when it has (for whatever reason) changed the resolution to such a small one I wouldn't want to go to my desktop anyway.

:O i can see ships while they jump...

its only when they are between two different solar systems that it happens, its not an issue for interplanetary travel.

Norton is the devil. If it lets you, add Sins to your permanent exclusion list.

Disappearing ships, eh? Sounds like the devs decided to put in space monsters after all.

"Now Billy, if you don't go to sleep like a good boy, the invisible ship devouring space monsters will get you"

I just had a hard lock on Sins -- I was playing a game with Schem, he was jumping into a system while I was dealing with pirates, and the game went black, I had a few "flashes" of what might have been a useable screen, but the game ended up freezing with some wierd kind of garbage on the screen -- looked like lines of some kind of symbols, running at random. I dindn't check, but the symbols in question may have been repeating -- e. g. only one string, repeated a lot.

and by jumping into the system, he means I was literally inches away from the edge of his gravity well.

No

That said, a dev asked for some info on command lag, and I can't find the thread in question.

So, here it is:

We actually had a series of two games. First game Schem hosted because I had a small issue with my port forwarding (my computer's IP address changed, and it took me a bit to figure that out...). I had horrible command lag, 4-5 seconds, with a ping of about 234 (Schem had none...). Second game I hosted, having fixed the port forwarding issue, and there was no command lag on my side (Duh, I was hosting ) and according to Schem the command lag wasn't too bad, 1/4 of a second to 1 second later on.

Graphics card much?

EDIT: Bah! You silly forum software, stop kicking me to the front page/old posts when I click on a thread!

Hmm...234ms isn't great, but it's not terrible either. Something we'll have to look into.

If you need me to run any extra debug software, just let me know -- I'm more than willing. Be aware that my router is not under my control. My Grandfather doesn't want me messing with it for fear I'll break it.

not for that game no, and even if i did it never interfers with the game.

For the longest time my parents were afraid of clicking the mouse button because they may have clicked some wrong spot and broke the computer One can only marvel at the differences between the two generations

Not to be a smart ass (well maybe a little), I'm one of the baby boomers (and a grandparent to boot!) and I design/support voice and data networks for a living. Generalizations like that can get you into trouble.

One can only marvel at the gross generalizations the younger generation makes.

Arguing against a generalization with a generalization? Though I'm sure that was purposeful.

I really was going to counterexample this, but anny picked up the inherent flaw in it... so I really dont have a chance to

every generation, every country, every socioeconomic class assigns generalizations. judging generalizations is about as purposeful as asking why we exist.

besides, even generalizing about generalizations is quite... well... quite...
the english language simply doesnt have a word for it (no, ironic doesnt fit) but there are plenty of generalizations which are good, drugs are bad for example, dont inhale something made of a burning plant, dont kill people etc.
