Sins Beta 4 Technical Feedback - *POST HERE*

Sins Beta 4 Technical Feedback - *POST HERE*

And so it begins....again.

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 4.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 4 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c
  • LAN or Broadband Internet Connection for Multiplayer

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, Sins should automatically generate a minidump file. Please send the generated exception and a DirectX diag report to support(at)ironcladgames(dot)com along with a detailed description as outlined above. Minidump files are located in (please note these directories are hidden by Windows):

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire
Vista: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

If you'd like to give us some non-technical feedback, please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=166574

By keeping this information in one place, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

In a recent game I played, three straight phase jumps stranded a few of my frigates. Highly annoying. I think it had something to do with the fact that I was streaming the frigates out of the factory and I kept issuing orders and changing the 'grouped move' option around while they were in phase space. I think that ships in phase space should be locked in, and nothing should stop them. Also, I want all my ships going into a system to end up in generally the same place if they're grouped. But most of all, I want the ships to just go to the edge of the grav well and jump so that they leave phase space as a formation, instead of worrying about making a perfect formation which causes endless delaying pathfinding bugs because they can't get into that perfect parade formation when it doesn't really matter. I'm sure that the pathfinding errors will be fixed, but I still don't see why the ships don't just go to the nearest usable part of the gravity well and coordinate their jump so that they end up in formation (although if the pathfinding causes collisions in phase space it might get ugly). Just a thought, and if anybody can come up with a good reason to form up before the jump, I'll shut up immediately.

Because where you jump out effects where you jump in? If you jump out to the "left" of the phase line, you jump in to the left of the phase line, for example.

Was playing online and got one of those string not found errors. Skipped that but then right after that things really went downhill. I got a message that said "Windows - Dispaly Driver Stopped Responding. The nv4_disp driver has stopped working normally. Save your work and reboot the system to restore full display functionality. The next time you reboot the machine a dialog will be displayed giving you a chance to upload data about this failure to Microsoft." After a min of trying to alt-tab around, Sins finally crashed.

Sending in the minidump.

maybe you know it anyway, but just to have it mentioned: just now the ICO lobby was extremely laggy, msg were displayed with a few minutes' delay and I think it happened to the other lobby chatters as well. whatever you tested there was seriously messing up some stuff. didn't get to play a game, so I can't judge that performance, but para and a few other were in, maybe the noticed sth.

I noticed a lag of about 10 seconds at times between posting a message and it appearing, and sometimes it was lost and never appeared. With that said, there was a LOT more people there than I usually see, but I'd imagine it has to scale with more than 10-20 people. Gameplay is not affected.

Not sure if this has reported:

BUG: Unit movement around a star

You have your systems around a star but when you move units from systems to another and their path takes them past the star they stop moving when they jump into the stars Grav Well. Then you have to select the unit's again, move them to the edge of the stars gravwell so that they can proceed to their destination.

Odd error kinda irrtating, does not happen to trade ships or AI controlled ships.

actually, they dont stop moving, they just move REALLY slowly and in groups of one, two, or three

I have had some problems with sound lately, it sounds like static/ inference. sometimes it gets better when I alt tab and go back in, restarting the game usually doesnt help.

I have an older vaio laptop VGN S3XP, but I cannot quite find the type of sound card, it just doesn't show anything along the lines of sound card in the hardware manager. and on the sony driver dl page the only real updated drivers are for video card (which I needed to properly play sins) wlan and some other thing.

maybe someone could help me with that, I think I talked about it with kryo on the chat this week.

Still having my ships sometimes not jumping into phase space and moving along at a snails pace to get to the target planet.

Also, sometimes gauss turrets open fire before they have even had construction started on them. This has been happening since I've been playing the betas. It is rare, but it still happens.

I was just playing a game with my brother. It was a random med map and I was attempting to place a large (1000) bounty on our mutual enemy (AI) when sins Alt+tabbed without me actually Alt+tabbing, this had happened before on sp but it never affected the game, but it would keep doing it about every 5 mins after the first time it happened.

This time however my end froze, but froze as in an eternal pause, I could still select ships and such, but nothing would move or happen and I was reported as disconnected on the other machine. Since it didn't technically crash, there is no minidump, I did however save both a replay and a save game of it, if you want to me send it (where should I again?).

On a somewhat related note, we tried to reload the autosaves, but his pc "Could not find save game." Is this a known bug? I know on another thread I saw that .30 wouldn't load multiplayer games, but this is .34 so maybe it's different?

BTW, my specs are:

Windows XP Professional 2002 SP2
2.74 GHz AMD Athalon 64 X2 Dual 5200+
2GB RAM
Dual ATI Radeon X1950 w/ crossfire
(is that all you needed?)

aaii... your right. But they might as well be standing still.

Frek - I get that too sometimes, but not with Sins. I'm starting to believe that may be a bug related either to Vista or the G15 software (which I also have).  The only way I've found to resolve it is to reboot the PC.

I have a G15, and I don't experience this issue, if that helps.

Another little bug that I am 99% sure you guys are aware of.

In radom maps, it seems that when the planets are too close to another systems star, it becomes difficult/impossible to see your ships when they travel to those same planets....ugh, that was a poorly structured sentence.

One thing that I have noticed is that the Vasari Bombardment platforms swap from the alien voice to the TEC missle platform operator.

Anyone else find that?

Note: repeated late-game crash minidump, happens consistantly although much earlier in multiplayer games. I doubt its related to RAM (as the game isnt very RAM intensive) however its extremely irritating and (with this new wierd system) I have no way of sending it.
Isn't very ram intensive?

Sins just locked on me in a multiplayer game, and while I'm sitting around watching it to see if it creates a minidump file, it's chewing through a gig. First crash since beta2.

Doesn't seem to want to die properly. Details.

Multiplayer 1v1 with chickenfur. Current activities were managing a battle in one of his gravity wells, something of everything in frigates on both sides, no cruisers, one carrier and one dreadnaught type capital ship on my end. The dreadnaught was on autocast with the siege platforms and had the bombardment upgrade as well, otherwise I was using no abilities. There was an enemy Kol and I think an akkan in the well, some hangar bays, a repair bay, planetary bombardment had just started. There was also a bunch of pirates attacking him at the same time there. Chickenfur might can give more details about his end, if he crashed too maybe he got something out of it besides a lockup. I was about to flip the pirate base, might have been well timed for that too.

Redraw failure, not responding in task manager, chewing a gig of ram still. I'm playing in windowed mode at 85hz with 2x AA and highest quality textures, no music. Everything else is default.

I am having a rediculously frustrating time even connecting to the ironclad server, we had 4 people sitting around for about 15 minutes trying to start a game, no one could. Another time we were ready to play and suddenly the server stopped working... or something, ive been trying to reconnect since then and no dice. The time was 1:45 or so est, on nov 20th.

ICO is currently down, yarlen doesnt know why

If the ICO server goes down, you should email [email protected] to let them know.

I have a weird bug related to modding.

Removing all random planetary bonus from the ice planet results in a freeze at the startup of the game (no crash, minidump or error message gets generated and the log is empty).

Setting possibleRandomPlanetBonusesCount 4 to zero and removing the next 4 lines of random bonus from PlanetIce.entity results in that.

Strangely you can remove all random planetary bonus from all other planet files without problems, only the ice planets seems to need at least one bonus to prevent the game from crashing.

Can somebody reproduce that problem?

I got another string error
"String ID:'IDSplaneDetailsInfocard_Culture_Takeoverstates_AlmostAquired"
