How you can help!

SINS is finally here!
The enthusiasm of everyone here has been a real inspiration during development. The magic of multiplayer is going to depend on strong community leadership. Our mission now is to hit critical mass so the community is able sustain itself.  We want to see the forum, ICO, and IRC traffic continue to ramp up so that there will be an abundance of players of all skill levels ready to play!

There are been a number of people who have generously volunteered their time and skills to promote the game over the course of development. Lately there have been a number of people who also want to help out, but don't know how. Well this is for you:

I hope one of the artists within the community decides to do a version of of a skin for us with an animated desktop. I for one would like a Vasari fleet doing a fly by of a yellow or blue sun. Then they can do the same each of the other races as well as one for the pirates. It seems to me like a good way to earn some extra cash.

@Blair - I kept forgetting to include Kotaku.com in my PMs to you. If you guys are not already aware of the site you should take an active interest in it. It is pretty damn good site for hardcore gamers even if it focuses on console titles a little to much for my taste. I guess that is why I kept forgetting about it.

1Spartan - Don't worry, Kotaku and several hundred other press sites/blogs are on our list. ;)

I must admit, not being a 4x player before (closest I came was probably X-com over 10 years ago) I was not familiar with SD or ICO, and I had not heard a thing about Sins before that article on 1up two weeks ago. Just letting you guys know the previews do work. They captured my attention.

I'll go post something in the Supreme Commander forums in the thread where a few dozen players are still stewing over the fact that Gas Powered Games arrogantly refused to fix a fatal audio bug in the original SupCom and instead told us to get new audio cards.

It is on Amazon now! Go review it guys!

Just saw this at Penny Arcade.

Here's a quote from the blog:

Installed Sins of a Solar Empire on the Night Engine yesterday, to see if it would be something we'd consider advertising. Uh... yes. Yes. Yes a thousand times over. This is why it's nice to work with a smaller company, because if they want to advertise something on your site, they're not pulling from some budget a year in advance of the game's release. Stardock sent a full, boxed retail copy of the title and asked if we'd be willing to promote that, as opposed to some theoretical game they might be making in the future. I'll talk more about it on Friday, but I am kind of bowled over by this thing. That someone would pay me to recommend a game as entertaining as Sins of a Solar Empire is really the most ridiculous kind of crap.
End of quote

Thought it was worthy of comment.

How do you go about recommending Sins of a Solar Empire? I've tried recommending it to a bunch of people I know who might enjoy such a game, and almost universally I run into the following issues/questions from them:

"Why doesn't it have a campaign/story mode in single player?"
"Why aren't there any victory conditions that don't involve eliminating all your opponents?"
"Where's the demo?"

Obviously the third of these is pretty easy to answer as I believe there's a demo due in a few weeks or so? But my question is, how do you "sell" Sins to somebody without having to deal with the first two issues?

I use my personal credibility as a voucher for the title. I ask them the following:

Do you trust me?
Do you trust my judgment?
Do you trust my reasoning skills?

Then I ask them a couple more 'yes' questions like:
Do you think I know you?
Do you think I know quality when I see it?

Followed by a couple 'no' questions like:
Do you think I would give you bad advice intentionally?
Do you think I would risk our friendship for something trivial?

Then I ask the big question "are you going to get it then?" which leads them to the only reasonible conclusion they can have which is buying the game.

For direct questions about game play I tell them "it is something you should experience first hand because I dont want to ruin any of it for you."

It works every time in my case.

I managed to get two of my friends to pick up copies. Working on a third. I'm hoping for a snowball effect.  :CONGRAT:

"Why doesn't it have a campaign/story mode in single player?"
End of quote

It does have a singleplayer mode. While it isn't a traditional campaign, and its definitely not the normal "storyline" most people want (and we will one day get, the devs have confirmed), a sandbox game set to FFA with a large number of players can prove an amazing experience filled with treachery, deceit, alliances, and impending doom... and if your skilled enough, ultimate victory.

Mix and match the elements above -- and expand as needed -- to explain to them the solution :D

I've got at least 4 or 5 people to buy this game so far, posted a few threads on 4chan's /v/, and generally got out the word. It's tending to spread really quickly, Something Awful has a 19 page (700+ reply) thread on it here

we are starting to talk it up pretty big at DIY-Street forums. I've played Gal Civ up to the current and Sins is EXACTLY what I've been wanting Gal Civ to be (on top of that, my wife and I played Eve-Online for 3+ years and we always wished it had a single-player mode...and in a strange way, Sins is sorta like that for us).

ok anyway, doing my part ;)

I understand this is all English, but maybe you'd like to know I did a lengthy feature on Pcparty.nl. It's a Dutch community site (from the gameparty.net network) with about 65000+ registered users. For all non dutch persons you can see the score at the bottom ;). I bought the game friday, played 16 hours this weekend (omg!) and wrote a review this morning ;).
