Research / UI windows drastically reduce framerate

The game runs very smoothly, even at high settings - however, when I open any of the larger UI elements (Diplomacy / Pirates window, but particularly the Research window), the framerate slows to an absolute crawl, and the mouse lags along with it.

The Research window is the worst by far - while there is noticeable slowdown with the other elements open, it's still not very difficult to click on what's needed. When the Research window is open, however, the framerate slows to something like one frame every 2 or 3 seconds, which makes selecting research items incredibly difficult. (It's a testament to how fun this game is that I keep at it, though!)

Here is my very abridged Dxdiag info (Full version sent to [email protected], with a link back here):

A number of ATI users have reported this. One at least noted that updating to Catalyst 8.1 helped considerably.

Oh! I forgot to mention - I actually did just upgrade to the newest Catalyst drivers (8.1) - it made no discernable difference.

Just a bump for anyone else with this issue - also adding, the framerate drop is still coming up just as frequently after the 1.02 patch.

Does your game also slow down when messages or infocards appear on screen? It so, it might be related to this. It appears to be a common issue across a wide variety of configurations.

I had read through that one, but I actually don't experience any slowdown at all with infocards or messages. The entire game runs perfectly, except for when one of the larger UI windows is open.

It also seems to lag more with windows that are larger and contain more elements; for example, it slows to a slideshow crawl when a research window is open, while the diplomacy window for example slows down a lot less (but still noticeably).
