Sometimes I get a flashing screen when my ships are phase jumping. I wonder if this patch would resolve that.

Glad I found this, I'm putting together a Quad core PC and running Vista 64x Ultimate soon.

I got an nvidia 7650GS with Vista Home Premium 32 bit and this did absolutely nothing for me. In early game I'm still getting flashing HUDs, a bit later to the game my driver starts shutting down and restarting every now and then, and when I've explored a single solar system and built enough units the game freezes for good and the driver keeps shutting down and restarting continously.

^ Same exact problem. (7300 GS, Vista 32 Premium, 3.4DC w/2gigs).

I ran into the freezing stuff on my laptop with an nVidia Quadro on it on Vista. I resolved it by turning the bump mapping and a couple other settings from highest to high.

First off, great name... second, no, that patch does not solve the freezing issue. I've had it installed since October and I've been getting the freezing glitch since the day I install this game.

I will try Frogboy's suggestion, but that seems sort of odd if you ask me. He has a Quadro card and has to tone down his settings. No offense Frog, but you got that Stardock by your name, are you a dev? If so, wouldn't you guys be working on a way to fix this instead of turning settings down from max? To be honest, this is new to me, seeing devs and such in the forums. Over at EA in the Battlefield forums, you have a better chance of running into Jessica Alba at a family cookout than talking to one of the Dice/EA guys... so to me, the fact that devs are on here is absolutely fantastic!

A couple people from another thread mentioned rolling WAY back to the following driver fixed this problem. I'm going to try it out.

this fixed the freezing, black screen of death crashes for me. but has caused a c++ visual runtime error after about 2 hours of gameplay.

Using a q6600 with vista 32bit and an nvidia 7800gs.

I get that same error with the Visual C++ runtime libraries the application has requested to terminate in an unusual way. I had played for 2 1/2 hours before getting it though. Why does it have to crash I hope my game saves still work from autosave or I am going to be disappointed.
My specs are:
AMD Athlon X2 64 FX-62 2.8Ghz
2GB Pny XLR8 Gaming memory
M2N-Sli Deluxe
Nvidia Pny GeForce 8800GTS 320MB
2X 320GB HDD
600W PSU
I have never run into this error before while playing a game.

LOL - Frogboy is not just a dev, he's Stardock's founder! (Brad Wardell - he also goes by Draginol here at times). How's that for company presence in the forums?

I must also add that playing the game for an hour or two it also crashes with the runtime error everyone else is getting. I am running a clean Vista system with 4 gigs of memory and nvidia 256mb card. (Dell XPS M1530 MAXED OUT). It is very frustrating. I hope they find a fix or add it in a new patch. Is there a way to see a log file after this crash happens.

Thank you,
Shannan

P.S. I applied the microsoft patch at the beginning of this post but it said I didnt need it.

Vista Service Pack 1 fixes a lot of issues.

I'll believe it when I see it. I've heard the opposite, it actually causes MORE issues and only fixes... *looks up the article* about 17 percent of existing issues.

I fixed my problem last night. I turned all the effects to High instead of highest. Also turned 4x down to 2x. I play the game in 8x speed or 6x speed. I think what was happening to me was the video card was over heating. Even though it is a top of the line Nvidia. (GeForce 8600M GT)

I had no crashes after I did this.

And I am now truly addicted to this wonderful game.

The beta used to flash and my graphics card would stop briefly... the system would recover and I could continue gaming until it happened so many times the game would crash/halt. I figured this was the beta so it that's what happens.

Now with the game being released I was able to play much longer (most of an afternoon) until my 2 star galaxy was pretty busy (~40 planets) when suddenly I get a bunch of flashes and the video drivers stop all over again until I return to desktop. I already downloaded this windows patch during the beta and yes I have the latest DirectX drivers and nVidia drivers. I'm running a 2.66ghz dual core with a Geforce 7900 why in the world am I getting video driver stopping errors? Yes it's not the latest video card but it still should work just fine.

Setting to high (not highest) straight across the board worked. No more crashes ATM. There is a big noticeable difference between to two settings and I hope it is addressed shortly for Vista 64 users.

I have not had these issues myself *knock on wood* but I know that at start up I let the game "decide" my visual settings for me (or are they already set at certain values out of the box?). Just for reference sake, I'm running a Quad core (2.4ghz), NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT and 3gb of ddr2 ram...
