So close to victory, but then...

Wow... Is there an explanation for this behavior?

I was playing at the 'easy' level (still learning) and was going for an cultural/influence victory. I was at 87% (90% being the winning value), and just before I could get higher, my northernly neighbor, my largest competitor, waged war. I was able to repel these attacks (didn't think I could!) and they begged for peace. I took it and a whole mess of tech in the deal. As soon as peace was made, I lost most of my influence (!) and my competitor gained a whole mess of influence.

What would explain this sudden loss of influence to an enemy whom has just begged for peace? I would have expected that I would at the least keep my previous influence, if not get a little more in the process...

Anyone have any observations on this?

Did you lose a lot more ships than he did.And also since the AI doesnt rely on starbases that much,except fpr resources,you probably lost influence if your starbases got wrecked.

That's the thing - I lost next to nothing in terms of ships. My survey vessel was kicking everything's hiney without much trouble at all. Now that I think of it, I think I did lose a starbase near to the neighboring empire. It did have a cultural thingee on it. That may have been the reason. Just seemed pretty drastic all of a sudden.
