Are Romantic Comedies Destroying Society?

Unrealistic Bullsh*t....

(It's rant time!!!)

One kind of movie I hate with a passion are romantic comedies....they are full of crap and "heartwarming" moments...they make girls cry and feel all tingly. I can't stand this crap they pump into women's heads.....the basic situation is that a woman who is uptight/ditzy/bitchy/not that attractive sees a guy who is their pinnacle of perfection OR a guy that they take for granted but later learn that he is "Mr. Right" and then goes through an emotional rollarcoaster adventure and finally obtains this guy. First of all, when does this ever happen?....This is crap....the premise sucks....no violence, sex, monsters, sex, violence, guns, death, or hilarious raunchy comedy.......Aren't movies supposed to have these qualities? I can't believe people would actually watch more than one or the sequel to one that was made.....really, one movie is all it takes to get the idea....SSDD for the entire genre. (Same shit, different day for all you non-Dreamcatcher readers/watchers) Second of all, I believe that romantic comedies are setting unrealistic ideals in women's heads....they then dream up this wild idea of having a perfect guy and then take out their disappointment on their spouse or boyfriend.(Nagging) Well, that's about it....I just can't stand these stupid things and if another girl makes me watch one I'm going to go insane......and not the fun kind of insane I am now.....

I hardly watch this sort of movies.

- You know what's going to happen
- You know how it's going to end.

How to make a romantic comedy (mix and match as you please)

1) Setup

- she likes him, he doesn't like her
- he likes her, she doesn't like him
- they both hate each other
- they both like each other but they are miles apart
- they don't know each other

2) get together

- wedding
- funeral
- family gathering
- mistaken identity
- accident
- business dealings

3) tension

- old boyfriend/girlfriend appears on the scene
- family disapproval
- some dark and horrible secret rears its ugly head
- he/she suppose to marry someone else
- their life goals are in conflict (eg. drug deal falls for a cop)
- terrible misunderstand

4) Ending

- everything dissolves perfectly, fits into place and they both kiss and live happily ever after.

Sometimes you NEED a little bit of UNreality to take you away from the mundane or insane reality.

I think most women have a good head on their shoulders and KNOW what is real and what is fiction - There are also some dimwits

Who's to say it doesn't happen -- some love stories are just like a romantic comedy -- most are not but some can be -- Most movies now are based on novels, fairytales or other movies. Some are loosely or strongly based on a true story -- I'd like to think there are people in the world who have love storys alike some of the best romantic comedies. Or at least parts of them. Although most women aren't that beautiful.

For 2 hours a girl gets to dream that Love at first sight and Knight in shining armour -- just might exist!! - and then she gets up and goes home

Zoo: Nice rant.

I have to disagree with you, though. Women are constantly subjected to BS that teaches them that they are not good enough as they are. Being a woman is difficult because there are constantly others telling you that you:

are too prude or too promiscious

are too fat or too thin

are a ball buster or too ditzy

have an unsightly belly or are too "angular"

are too flabby or too muscular

lack ambition because you stay at home with your children or are selfish and not nurturing because you have a career

have too small a chest or your large chest isn't perky enough

eat too little and are unable to let loose and enjoy life or eat what you want and are a glutton who doesn't care about her body

you don't wear make up and so don't have pride in your appearance or you wear make up and aren't "natural"

. . . . and the list goes on and on . . .

You guys want us to be beer swilling, football loving, sex goddesses AND modest, motherly, sweethearts . . .

We need an escape from the crap that gets forced down our throats . . . I have watched enough Lord of the Rings and Rambo to have earned the right to watch 50 First Dates and Return to Me.

If you guys want us to continue to make chicken casserole for supper and wash the sheets and wipe the runny noses and give you blow jobs day in and day out all the while being assaulted with the unrealistic expectations society has for us, then the LEAST you can do is buy us some chocolate covered almonds and sit through The Wedding Planner!

Wow . . . . . . I got really worked up about that, didn't I?

Gosh Shaun! You have to rant and rave about everything don't you? I love romantic movies. Not that I really expect any of those kinda things to happen to someone like me. But hey, you never know now do you? But I highly doubt it would happen.

Hi, my name is Angloesque, and I'm addicted to Romantic Comedies. One weekend I checked out "While You Were Sleeping" on a seven-day rental and watched it six times. No, eight times. Whatever. (I was 16, okay....) I also watch "Bridget Jones' Diary" at least once a month, usually accompanied by chocolate, while my knight in shining tin foil/aluminum is playing Warcraft II/Doom/other testosterone-pumping, wife-ignoring games.

Okay, I'm done. Not really addicted (anymore). The objection I have to your generalisation is "Love, Actually." It is not scripted like all the others and Hugh Grant, for once, isn't slimy and it's not happily ever after for everyone. Great flick. I intend to buy it as soon as someone decides to sell a used one.

BTW, aren't tin foil and aluminum foil synonymous? [Checks dictionary.com to make sure is correct before posting, otherwise would look stupid(er)]

Must have been a man who wrote the review. I personally loved that movie as well, and normally don't go for Hugh Grant movies unless I want a "no-brainer" to watch. Romance does exist! At least sometimes. My husband was very romantic when we were dating and has been occasionally since we married. I enjoy watching romantic comedies because they remind me of that time and make me remember that men are not always insensitive and chauvanistic. Similar is my feelings for romantic novels, I enjoy reading something (with a plot) from time to time that doesn't make me think too hard. My husband's flippant dismissal of my bodice-rippers as reading material is akin to your feelings on romantic comedy movies. Men and women just have different views on these things.

I don't think that it's solely romantic comedies but poorly made sequels to great original movies that are slowly causing the universe to rip apart.  BTW the last movie that dealt with relationships that I have seen actually suprised me, it was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.  I think the best date movies are thrillers correct me if I'm wrong though...
