Anistropic Filtering - Use it!

Hello everyone,

Sins options/effects lets you configure up to 4x Anti-aliasing but doesn't let you control anistropic filtering.   I have a high end system: quad-core cpu, 2gb ram, 750i nforce motherboard, 1 Nvidia 8800 GT.

Last night I forced Anistropic from "Application Controlled" to 4x and then up to 8x.  I have to tell you that this ups the graphical quality of the game noticeably.  The highly refined texture mapping reveals details that you don't notice before, an example for me being all the individual landing lights on the Kol's 4 hangar bay launch pad.  It also seemed to smooth out the bloom effects.

If your system can handle it, and I recommend trying in incremental steps, up the Anistropic Filtering.  I had no noticeable framerate difference but it probably will slow down low to mid range systems.  You won't be disappointed!

How do you change it, if not in-game?

Depends on your video card. If its Nvidia you should have the Nvidia Control Panel. If its ATI I believe its called ATI Catalyst.

On the Nvidia control panel, find the Global settings tab. On there at the top will be some settings such as Anistropic Filtering and Antialias Filtering, etc. By default they are set to "Application Controlled" which is typically what you should have it at. Change and then Apply the Anistropic Filter value. Typical choices are 2X, 4X, 8X, 16X.

I never leave these settings on application control.

You just have to remember that some games are having problems with adaptive AA (ATI users and SupCom), or that the higher quality AA filters (controllable through the ATI CCC) may degrade the performance.

Ah ok thanks I found it and tested it. I think it affects Sins and gives it a little better look, not a giant difference but it's worth a try if your pc can handle it.
