Hey is anybody running Sins of a Solar Empire on a Nvidia FX 5200 series? If not does anyone think sins of a solar empire will work on it?

I use the same card in particular to your question( yes i need to upgrade) it runs prettey smooth for such an old generation video card, but when big battles get on the scene with like 100 ships it tends to get prettey choppy, other than that the game runs prettey smooth for me with no real problems other than big huge battles. Hope this solves your problem =)

ATI and nVidia both make solid cards, and some people have issues with either from time to time. ;) for me both brands have been pretty good.

As for recommendations

ATI: HD3850/HD3870 are the newest with a very good price/performance ratio. 512MB version of both should be between €180 and €200, with the HD3870 offering slightly better performance.

nVidia: 8800GT may be slightly over budget, but offers phenomenal performance for its pricetag. The upcoming 9600 will also be in your budget range, but i have no idea how it will match up in terms of performance. May also be worth seeing at what price the 9800 comes out.

the 9600 is a better card than the latest ati cards being the 3850/70. just look at some benchmarks and u will think the same thing. costs like 180-200 dollars us.

It only shyly beats the HD3850 in some games, but in a game where both cards are equally supported I've seen the HD3850 actually be the superior card.

Considering the HD3850 supports PCI-E 2.0 and Shader Model 4.1 (which the 9600 or any Nvidia card currently out does not), and ATI generally has better driver releases, the HD3850 is a more attractive prospect.

I have a HIS HD3850 IceQ3 (it has a custom 2-slot cooler on it and superior heat-sink and heat-pipe implementation) and I got it for the same price as your bog standard 9600GT.

Go with a 512MB one now -- you won't regret the extra memory. And if you SLI, I believe your still required to have 2 identical cards -- can't just slap a 512MB card in with a 256MB card.

Also, I love having 4GBs of memory in my machine, if you can stretch the budget. If you can't, 2GBs is plenty.

Do not get a 256 card even if you plan on getting another eventually. It's a waste of money, imho. You pretty much need 512mb anymore, though that is highly dependent on what resolution you are running your rig at.

Does that really say SILENT? Meaning it doesn't have a fan on it? Hmmm, probably not the greatest idea, but . . .

And if you still have tome, I highly HIGHLY recommend getting one of the new Seagate Barracudas that have 32mb cache. They run almost as fast as the Raptors.
