Bizarre Issue

Buzzing Noise

Ok, this is one of the weirdist problems I've ever had with a game.  Let me describe it:

I play the game (great fun, loving it btw) just fine with no issues in gameplay.

BUT, there is a weird buzzing noise coming from my PC when I play.

No, I am not a stupid moron who hasn't noticed a furred up fan or a loose power cable.  This noise ONLY happens when I am playing SoaSE.

At first, I thought it was probably the fan on my graphics card or CPU ramping up to cope with increased temperatures from playing the game.  But having opened up the case and listend carefully, I'm pretty sure the buzzing noise is coming from the PSU.  Also, the very INSTANT i stop playing, or even task out, the noise vanishes, which would be inconsistent with a fan-spin noise, which you'd expect to take a couple of seconds at least to go down.

The noise is very irritating.  But what is very, very strange is the fact that it only occurs when I am playing this game.  It has never happened before.  I do not get this noise when playing Crysis, TF2, World in Conflict, or Medieval TW2.  Only Sins causes it.

In fact, I have just tasked out of Sins to write this post, and the noise stops instantaneously when I task out.  But when I go back in (*goes back into game to check*), it starts up again at once.

I wondered if it might be the long-forgotten remnant of the PC Speaker doing something funny - like trying to play the Sins soundtrack by itself, and interpreting it as a constant buzz?  But this is just a wild guess, and I have no idea how that could happen or how I could fix it - and anyway, the sound really does seem to be coming out of the PSU.

I have very little hope that anyone will be able to solve this peculiar problem, but any thoughts would be much appreciated.

That... is weird. Are you sure it doesn't happen in Crysis? (As one of the most graphically demanding games out there, I'd expect it to have a much heavier PSU draw via the graphics card than Sins does... unless maybe its the CPU draw... but that doesn't make sense either!)

That said, what is the make / model of your video card, wattage, 12V amperage, (the 12V amperage is very important, as as make and model -- as another person once said, "once you have quality, wattage is cheap").

Whats your video card / CPU, as well. (Just trying to get all the probable variables out... if your power supply isn't strong enough to support your video card, all sorts of odd things can happen, ranging from a gradual meltdown of your various system components to a great big house fire, completely unpredictably).

I know this isn't much help, but as a comment:

My 360 will also do this. When on the Dashboard it is fine, when I play certain games it is fine, but when playing other games (Shadowrun one of them) I get the terrible buzzing sort of fan noise.

Also some friends of mine have noticed it as well, and it is only from 360's that have been returned after going wrong...

My specs:

PSU
600W 12cm Fan Silent PSU - PFC 20+4pin

CPU
Core 2 Duo E6320 (1.86Ghz) 4mb cache

RAM
2GB DDR2 667MHz/PC2-5300

Video Card
Sapphire ATI X1950XT 256MB

Mobo:
GIGABYTE S775 Intel 965P ATX

Like i said, I have never had any problem with any other game before. I built the pc about a half year ago, and have had zero issues with running anything. I don't think there is any actual problem with the PSU being unable to supply the video card with all the power it could need. If there was any problem in that direction, I'd have expected it to show up a long time ago, and under the strain of graphically intensive games like Crysis.

Here's some other odd info about the problem. The buzzing is not always continuous - it sometimes goes away briefly. But if I mouse over a menu or ship/planet, the pop-up toolbar/info panel will set the buzzing off again. Then if I move my mouse pointer back off the toolbar, the noise will vanish straight away.

The mystery deepens!
