I keep getting overwhelmed by Pirates.I can't win?

I have played this single player game at least 25 times for a total of 60 hours plus and I always lose because the enemy AI always comes back at me with twice as many ships to my ships. I thought I set this game on the easiest settings.I set it on easy random for team 2 but I still lose. The game allows me to create one capital ship and about 6 frigates to start off at. I do all the extracting from nearby asteroids to build up my resoirces on my populated planet. But after that I can only keep making cobalt frigate ships for defense.I can not make any more Capital ships, even when I have a capital ship builder???? And I have lots of resources as well as credits. I just don't get it? The game is total frustration because everytime I search out another planet twice as many pirate ships or enemy ships are there to come up against me. Also two planets I cannot colonize because they are desert or volcanic planets. You have to be high on the research level to be able to colonize these planets with a colony ship.So your stuck with one terran homeworld and one capital ship plus 10 or 12 cobalt frigates for defense. It doesn't take very long for you to lose. I cannot get beyond three planets without losing? What am I doing wrong????  Don't I have the single player settings set right for easy play or what? Is there a beginners guide or walkthru to help you with this sim? I even tried choosing a small map without pirates as a senario but I still lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated.thanks ahead of time.

It looks like you haven't discovered the research tree yet. Try making the research stations... as TEC they are civil and military... the third column of logistic buildings. This lets you make other ship types, research to higher capital and fleet capacity... basically fix everything.

When you open the research screen, you'll see an option on the left side for Fleet research. Within that screen there will be two tracks of research. The bottom one increases your fleet supply, allowing you to build more ships. The top one increases the number of capital ships you can have at once.

to produce a Capital Ship, you must meet ALL of THREE conditions :

1. have built the cap ship construction building in your gravity well

2. have available « Capital Ship Commanders »

3. have at least 50 ship supply available for each cap ship u wanna build

Conditions 2 & 3 are obtained by going into the « Fleet Logistics » sector, in Research, and there, by clicking on the buttons (up + down) to research new levels of Cap Ship Commanders + Global Ship Supply.

Each Cap Ship requires : Resources + 1 Cap Ship Commander + 50 Global Ship Supplies.

u started the game with 1 free Commander ... u seem to not have researched to obtain a 2nd Commander (upper half of the « Fleet Logistics » sector, in Research).

like the previous poster has suggested, u dont seem to know a lot about Research : no surprise, then, that u lose so easily ...

since u say that u are stuck with only 1 cap ship and a few frigates, it seems that u NEVER increased your Global Ship Supply ... so u spent what was given to you by default at the start of the game !!! of course, u remain weak : thats not much !

YOU MUST RESEARCH HIGHER AND HIGHER LEVELS OF FLEET LOGISTICS :
CAN YOU READ THAT ?

Do letters hurt your eyes? I'd step away from the computer then. Even if they are in CAPS, is it loud? Then turn down the volume on the computer then, doubt it would help. The reason for this is letters do not make sounds at all. Get out of the old comic book readings. If big letters disturb you, childhood would have been hell reading all those children books. IT SHOULDN'T MATTER IF I WRITE THIS IN CAPS or lower case. These are just words that produce no "yelling." Remember, these are just letters.

I too am having the same problem.
But I will make some good sugetstions on how to fix your quick end.
Try the tutorials, they aren't the best but there are some good tipes
You need as some other posters have said, use the Tech tree.
Save and reply trying different things and see what happens, after my 4th game now I have access to the Capital ships and the different ones from the firgate yard.
Take over a nother planet or in my case and Asteroid belt.
Now this leaves me with my home planet and the coloeny/asteroid.
The key to be able to build new things now that I have a few games were I died quickly is to use the tech tree.
There is also a good tutorial on the this site, Camplay Example: SIns of a Solar Empire Complete with screen shots and sugestions, print it out and follow what it says.

You will find after following the other posts and my input that the Sins is less frutstarting.

Cheers!

Looks like you didn't build any research stations and also aren't aware of the research tree. It's the top center button and there's 4 tabs on it: Military, Civilian, Fleet, and Artifact. Use the fleet screen to increase your fleet limit and gain additional capital ship crews. Use the Military and Civilian screens to research their technology, respectively. The artifacts are discovered by exploring planets. You will need several research stations of both military and civilian type in order to unlock higher branches of the tech trees.

Another thing...if you think you're getting your butt kicked because the AI and pirates are ganging up on you, they probably are. Lock your teams when selecting a map. You can lock AI into a free-for-all or set up teams of custom sizes and difficulty levels to suit your needs. This will give you a fighting chance until you're capable of taking on an unlocked roster of AI players.

Whoa, give this person a break. These are honest mistakes. You have no idea if this person has ever played a 4x or empire/nation-building game. Not everyone has played this kind of game before or paid attention through the tutorials. I really don't think everyone should be jumping to conclusions or throwing out negative descriptions of someone especially when they're brand new to this community. Not everyone picks up everything easily right away. In this game that's especially true because the lax hardware requirements bring a lot of people to the table who ordinarily would have difficulty getting a system capable of running new games.

I'm not saying you and other people are wrong. I'm not saying you and other people need to stop. I'm just saying we need to give people a break, especially those with new names like this. Right now this person is frustrated, but a few question answers will easily turn this game into a fun experience.

I read the manual and I went thru the tutorials 3 times. I also built miltary and civilian labs for each colonized planet. I did research and researched the trees for military and civiliann research. The artifacts and fleet ones are BLANK??? So they are no use to me. I built a frigate factory and a capital factory plus icapital ship and about ten cobalt frigates. BUT THE PROBLEM IS THE GAME WONT ALLOW ME TO BUILD ANYMORE CAPTITAL SHIPS?????????? AWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEE!!!!!! Whats wrong with this sim.How can I win a game with only one capital ship? Im always outnumbered by the enemy 2 to 1. I built up my metal and crystal resources, so its not like I don't have enough for each planet. I get to colonize about 3 planets and then I get invaded at a former planet I already colonized. Any more advice would help.thanks

Try hovering over them. You need resources to research fleet upgrades.

Go to the research window and bring up the fleet tab. There are two rows of icons. The top one is for capital ships and the lower one is for fleet capacity. Let your mouse hover over them or build up 1400 credits, 400 metal, and 200 crystal and at least one of the icons should turn green to tell you research is available. Capital ships and fleet capacity is expensive. It is much more expensive to build a new capital ship after you have researched a new slot/crew for it, but you can build up resources.

On the civilian/empire/harmony research tab you can get the ability to colonize ice, volcanic, and desert planets. You can also sit colonizing frigates in a system with resources asteroids that are around something that cannot be colonized (such as a magnetic storm, dead asteroid, gas giant, and so on). That frigate will automatically colonize those resources for you to give you extra income.

Also, some maps do not have pirates. You should definitely lock yourself on a team with an AI friend or lock everyone into their own individual teams for a free-for-all so the AI doesn't gang up on you. This is being addressed in the next patch, but for right now this is the best way to improve the quality of your game.

You spent 60 hours, read the manual, got help here and still don't understand the game? Maybe its the wrong game for you?

Like I said, my main problem with sins, is the game only allows me to make ONE CAPITAL SHIP. Allow me to give you an idea of a typical scenario. I start off with two 2 Lev construction frigates.I have them constuct metal and crystal extractors.Next I develop the planet. Next I create a frigate factory. Next I create a capital factory. Then from those two factories I build one Akon capital ship, one scout frigate and 3 cobalt frigate. So I now have a fleet. Then I build a miltary lab and two orbital turret defense guns.So far so good.
Then I want to go to the next planet. I send out my scout frigate to check it out. I bring him back to my original home planet after I have an idea what the next planet is and is bout including how many enemies. Then I send in my Akon captital ship and 3 frigates to the new planet. I fight a few hostiles and colonize that planet. Most of the time its an asteroid. Now a problem has beed created. The homeworld I left has no protection from the enemy because I have no EXTRA cobalt frigates and ANOTHER CAPITAL SHIP to protect it? Do you see my problem. I go to each planet with just the fleet I have. The game will not permit me to build extral capital ships.Oh, I can crank out a few more cobalt frigates but thats all. Eventually the enemy builds up TWICE as many ships as mine. And then Im toast. If I could build more capital ships I would stand a chance. And I have milked the surrounding asteroids with metal and crystal extractors for all their worth. So why isn't the game allowing me to build more capital ships?

if your playing a medium map, the enemy should not have come to you that quickly. If you are playing with pirates. you have to go to the pirate symbol. (right next to the research icon), and you need to outbid your AI opponent so that the pirates is gonna attack them not you. There is also a message saying pirate attack is immanent. that is when you go to the icon and try to outbid your opponent. try to keep some credits so you can outbid them. It is not hard. then you will have more time to build and expand without them attacking. Also if you feel you get attacked very quickly, build some turrets. It will keep them occupied enough for your fleet that is only one jump away to help out.
Very early game, one capital ship and a couple of figates (3 should be enough) should be able to take out a pirate attack.

Tralon, you will sincerely excuse me for laughing, not from you, but that last message from you was very funny for me. It happened to me, not in this game, but in a similar 4x which I didn't understood as well. I see perhaps you need, as every dude has tell you before, to research more "space" to accomodate your next ships. That's called Fleet Research. There, although you see "blank" spaces on the artifact, which is ok at the start of the game, the "Fleet" one isn't as you might think. The "ranks" and the "stars" mean actual researches that you can perform. Each one represent a level or amount of given "spaces" to invest in ships. Just do your first research for each one and look at the two indicators besides your "credits" to the left. There is a counter for how many "spaces" you got left in building. That's the fleet upkeep. Means that a ship needs "x" number of "spaces" in order to be built. If you don't have enough of spaces, the ship won't build at all. Same for Capital ships. Please try that before you return. I'm sure it will do.

so to hijack this thread...

got a simple question about orbital refineries.

Is it best to build 1 in each of your gravity wells or does that start to overlap their effects

I guess i'm a little unclear on how they work when they "go to neighboring territories to collect resources
