Sins of a Solar Empire v1.03 preview

Sins of a Solar Empire v1.03 preview

A sneak peek!

Sins of a Solar Empire is the highest rated new PC game of 2008 as well as the best selling new PC game of 2008 but we're not resting on our laurels.

Even now, version 1.03 of Sins of a Solar Empire is in internal beta. Stardock and Ironclad are working through the features and testing the new updates based on player feedback.  Once that's done we'll get a demo version out and then move on to 1.04.

Here are some of the new features going into v1.03:

1) Significantly updated computer AI.  The AI is substantially better than in the current game. We're also evaluating whether to put in a difficulty level that gives the AI added bonuses since, in any RTS, a top human player will always be able to out think a computer AI.

2) LOTS of new game setup options including:

+ Pirates or no pirates in a given game
+ Fleet size
+ Income rate speed
+ Build Speed
+ Ship speed
+ Research Speed
+ Culture Speed

3) The open market for buying and selling of resources has been altered so that there are random fluctuations in pricing and can crash or boom based on player behavior.

4) Imrpoved group phase jumping for large fleets of ships.

5) AI will surrender if situation is hopeless rather than drag the game out.

6) AI players will replace humans in multiplayer if a player drops.

7) Defeated players who are observing can no longer give resources or place bounties (bit of an exploit there).

8) Lots of tweaks to Ironclad Online for messaging users.

9) Improvements to network coding for multiplayer play.

This is by no means a complete list. There's dozens of small changes based on player feedback (we'll give a complete list when we release the update).

Our ETA for this release is late next week or the week after depending on testing.  We want to make sure the AI updates work pretty well (and that means, ahem, lots of play testing!) and lots of network testing.

We also have a pretty large list of things to do for a future 1.04 so if your own personal wishlist isn't fulfilled here, there's always 1.04 to look forward to. :)

(Sorry long post)

This is a great game hands down, with new depth that I normally don't see in rts today. But there are some problems here and there. Here are some Ideals to fix the problems, change or fix any you like.

One of the best ways to still get a part of the single player campaign, without having to build a single player system (with story). Is to add what I would like to call a broadcast every couple of min(30?20?10?). The single player campaign not only give us a characters story, but emerses us in the culture of that world. As it stands, there are around 15 lines for each unit. Around what a normal rts would have. So if we increase the number of lines in the game with a cultural broadcast every so often, we would hear something new, then the same three lines for the move command. This would also increase the culture depth of the game. Right now as it stands, the only places where you can find the background history for a faction, is in the lore in the book, voice acting of that unit, tech tree and what is said about that unit. You could also use this to buff up the culture system(which I find kind of weak).

So here is my example. Every 30 min, the amount of culture of every faction (based on % is put in a pool). So lets say that there are three players, with the first being TEC and holding 25%of the entire map with there culture. The second being the Vasari with them holding 35%. The last being Advent with 50% of the map under there culture contronl. So the number 1-25 is for Tec, 26-50 is for the Vasari and 51-100 is for Advent. A random number generate then gives you a number between 1 and 100. Let's say in this case 49, with is the Vasari player. At this point a one line out of four for each faction will play for the winning player. So in this case there are four lines of voice acting for the Vasari faction. So one of those lines will play. Now here is the were you increase the depth of the game. In the tech tree is an upgrade that tied to each line of voice acting. After you get the tech, and that line of voice acting is played, all of your fleet get a bonus, base on which line is played. So in this case, it would play somehting like this.

Vasari line Dark fleet(here I go)

Vasari voice actor:" It is a great day for the empire, as elite shock troops on board our capital ships help train others in the fleet, the ways of the Dark fleet"

Now if Dark fleet tech is reached, then the fleet able dark fleet becomes active. In my mind the Dark fleet ability is that when you focus fire on one ship in the fleet, you find that your ships target the whole fleet(in a sense removing the able to focus fire on one ship at time).

To help from making the fleet ability overpowering, all fleet ability are lost when the next boardcast is sent , if not used. And while all fleet can use the ablility, only one fleet can use it at a time.

I will add some more about the AI later

Patches are not made for major gameplay changes. They are made for patching bugs and adding minor functionality.

Will there be an option to deny the AI surrender? There's been a few games where I knew I had effectively won but going on to mercilessly crush them was immensly satisfying.

For being the top this and top that game of 2008 I hope to see a LOT more patches commin out within the next few months. Its a good start for a game and I fully understand why they released it...

But for a 4x it needs more loving. The AI is pretty terrible right now so i'm glad to see improvements on that...

The difficulty to actually WIN is retarded. It takes WAY too long... I've never actually finished a big game... It gets to the point where I cannot possibly lose... and i'm just spending time running around trying to take all the planets.

Anyway, good to see they're pumping out at new patch.

One thing I noticed... No mention of fix for mod support. Currently players have to copy the entire game into the mod folder to run custom ships/textures and such. Thats pretty lame. I was under the impression this was going to be fixed. For being such a "mod friendly" game it should be a lot easier on everyone to download, install and play a mod... and not take up gig afer gig of space per mod. Not to mention those mod files are FORCED into a folder I have no control over... My games are installed on a DIFFERENT drive for a good reason... I do not use my WINDOWS drive for games and i'd rather all my mod files not be dumped there.

I hope it fixes the hosting/firewall problem. I cant even play your game unless im joining and not hosting. Please fix this issue, cause I cant play my friends online until you do.

There is nothing to be 'fixed', they're changing some ICO stuff and making some improvements in 1.04 but if you can't host a game that's pretty much your fault

No mention of fix for mod support.

They actually mentioned this already for 1.03. I have little problem with it compared to, say, the UI/fixed slot problem because all it requires is one extra installation step where the other is much more important to creating quality mods.

Glad to see continued support for this game (from both devs and users). I love it and welcome change!

Wait. I lost you.

What, exactly, are you complaining about?

Is it the lack of a single player campaign?

If it is, (and if it's not, my apologies), then you're another one of those people who need to get it through their heads that THIS IS NOT A STANDARD RTS.

I stand by my statement that the greatest 4x games ever made didn't have a campaign, and they didn't need one, and asking for this game, which IS NOT A STANDARD RTS, to have what all RTSs have is like me being mad that it doesn't allow me to manage my own football team.

Wrong game. Sorry. Now go play any one of the bazillion RTSs on the market and leave the rest of us to the one, single decent 4x space game made in the last decade.

Besides, how many times would a person play a storyline before it got boring and the game got put "on the shelf"? Once? Twice? Not worth months of man-hours of development, thanks.
End of quote

Responding to someone's opinion, which is valid no matter how much you think it isn't, by telling them to sod off and go somewhere else is trollish at best.

Personally, I would have preferred a storyline I could get my teeth into.. and yeah that pretty much means adding in a Campaign, but I am happy with the game as it is if need be since I knew what I was buying. From a business point of view I have no doubt that a campaign is coming.. and it makes sense since nearly every review I have read about Sins commented on the lack of single player goodness.

As for the comment about the replayability of a single player campaign.. to play it through once would mean you have to buy a copy of the Sins Expansion (if it comes to light). I think IC and SD would be happy if everyone bought at least one copy even if they only played it once.. eh? Especially since it would no doubt add alot of multiplayer goodness in as well.

How's about you consider the possibility that Sins can be both a Single player and Multi player game? Heck they could even throw in a co-op campaign.. wouldn't that be fun!

Anyway.. I respect your opinion on the game as YOU would like it.. but fortunatly.. when they created the game it was not just to make Rhedd_V happy.

The ONE thing I would like in 1.04 is this:

Some more advanced diplomacy, like asking people to make peace or war with others, and info on who's allied to who. Plus, it would be nice if they notice and give positive standings if you help defend their planets.

But other than that, cool game!

It would be nice when a player's avatar picture gets broken if a sound like broken glass would be heard. It would be simple, alert the player that a player had been eliminated, and would be cool. I watched the screen to see what happened when the glass got broken and think the additon of sound would be an improvement.

So... My one request, that I can think of at 2 in the morning, that I plead you fulfill, is an adjustable Squad Cap.Your wildest dreams (or at least the tamer ones) are likely to be fulfilled!2) LOTS of new game setup options including:+ Pirates or no pirates in a given game+ Fleet size+ Income rate speed+ Build Speed+ Ship speed+ Research Speed+ Culture SpeedI won't even give you a hard time for not READING THE POST YOU'RE RESPONDING TO! ^_^Just a side note... when I bought Dawn of War I wasn't terribly fond of it until they released the Total War mod which tripled all the squad caps (in a balanced fashion for each race). After which, my friends bought the game just to play the mod, and we didn't buy the expansions until the mod was released for each [just waiting on Soulstorm's now].e)On the subject of Dawn of War, I wonder if Relic realizes how many of us are out here that simply refuse to buy their games until such-and-such mod is made for it.I, for one, wait on the Skirmish AI mod before buying, since out of the box, their game has like, NO AI to speak of whatsoever. Sad.Anyway, other than being a bit too cowardly, I happily have no real complaints with the AI in Sins, and it's only going to get better. I'm glad some game companies still realize that you shouldn't have to play MP just to have an opponent.
End of quote

Well, I was kind of specific. I wasn't saying a general increase in the overall squad cap, I was asking for an actual adjustable slider, like in Supreme Commander for Example... where you could have a squad cap from 250 to 1000... but I think theirs should be 250-10,000 ... just in case it should come up ^_^.

I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Funny, I think wasting time on multiplayer upgrades is unimportant. I don't play multiplayer. I don't see why others have to complain that a fundamental aspect of rts gaming is a 'waste of time' just because its not their preference. I'm actually pretty sour on Stardock for this. The games neat, but after a few skirmishes it'll go on the shelf. I may or may nor buy the expansion since when it comes out, I'll have nothing to get me back to this game. I do love the way Stardock has such great support after a release, but honestly it doesn't do me much good if they ignore the entire playstyle I prefer.Wait. I lost you. What, exactly, are you complaining about? Is it the lack of a single player campaign? If it is, (and if it's not, my apologies), then you're another one of those people who need to get it through their heads that THIS IS NOT A STANDARD RTS.I stand by my statement that the greatest 4x games ever made didn't have a campaign, and they didn't need one, and asking for this game, which IS NOT A STANDARD RTS, to have what all RTSs have is like me being mad that it doesn't allow me to manage my own football team.Wrong game. More on that note... in the other guy's defense... this game is heavily moddable. Like Operation Flashpoint there's almost no end to what you can create so the modding community can always make it fresh with new campaigns and what not... although it's highly ill-advised to leave it to the modding community alone (look at what id did on Doom III when they left Co-op to the modding community)...on the other hand though, I'm a multi-player purist. I play a campaign ONCE and rather play humans after that because I'm a social creature who likes dealing with a challenge.

And Co-op (should there be a campaign), another WONDERFUL option that EVERY game company leaves out of PC games these days is always a welcome addition...(as long as it's more than two players...I hate that Gears of War is only 2 player co-op).

...Hooray Serious Sam!

Diplomacy is being completely redone but it won't be ready for awhile.

Patches have a history of correcting major flaws. One of my other favorite old games, Age of Wonders II, had no random map for skirmishes. Added in the patch. I consider that a pretty major change.

Without a good story to back it up, the game gets old. I've played it through 4 times now and its already just a repeat. There is nothing really getting us into the game. Just move ship, research, point and click. I like the random events idea. That would be good. Or maybe something actually done with the independent planets beyond a couple raid ships. Maybe minor civilizations? I can roleplay the events all I like, but its nowhere near as satisfying as a campaign made to coincide with future expansions.

Just because its a long term strat doesn't mean it should ignore a lot of basic elements. Yes, people usually only play a campaign through once. But that can be hours of gameplay time, and really makes you interested in the setting beyond the shininess of the ships and the nifty sounds they make when they explode.

I'll probably never mess with multiplayer. I don't have the time, I like being able to put it down whenever I want. Single player is the only part of a game that really matters to me.

And I don't come in and whine about how multiplayer is a waste of time and people should get it through their heads its pointless. I prefer to show some respect for differing views.

No, they can't. There is no codebase for a "campaign", the closest you could do is make a bunch of themed maps. If you don't know what you're talking about don't post.

carbon is right.

limitation of modding:
-anything that is based on scripting cannot happen in the game just yet.
e.g. maps like dota in wacraft 3 rely heavily on scripting and nearly all campaigns rely on scripting in every game that exists.
-cannot change core mechanics that are not in the entity files (theres quite a lot).
-cannot change the a.i scripting (you can modify a few high level things, but nothing much).

I'm just asking to have some more voice acting to be add at the very least. The same old three lines, being to get to you after you hear them 100 totimes over during a game. If my Broadcasting center only boadcast voice, acting, it would be enought. But what I added before was to added more depth to the game, and make the culture end more important.

I don't know if this message will be seen or not, but Vasari has that cap ship that can make a Phase Node, a wormhole... Thing is you can travel to it not from it.

Would be nice it it was both ways.

So you would trade hundreds of man hours for a few hours on a campaign? Lets face it, Sins isn't going to get a marvelous campaign in a patch. An expansion, maybe, but not a patch. I like the Skirmish on Sins, the AI is ok, although a little lacking in some areas, but can be improved easily with a few patches and some feedback. I don't play multiplayer, but I understand it is a part of this game and needs to be supported as well.

The best 4x strategy game of all time WAS Master of Orion 2 -however with the release of this game i may be convinced to change my 14 year opinion of the best game of all time..

and yes i still play it and yes it is still badder than any of the games that have followed it...

how do i know sins will be as epic and awesome as master of orion 2 was.... Because the same thing happens to me when i play it... I warm up the game look at the clock and it says 2:30... when i look at the clock again it says 2:30 and its a different day... only 2 games ive ever done that with... Master of Orion 2 and Sins of a Solar empire

And there was no "campaign mode" it was a skirmish style with the options setting up how many computers there were etc...

victory was conditional in which you set the victory conditions... similar to the civilization series...

frankly im very happy with sins so far.. They've done an excellent job of combining RTS and 4x gaming...

Finally a real time game in which within the first 5 minutes i dont have 5000 of the cheapest unit destroying my base and production... God bless you stardock!! God bless you.. you guys put the S back in strategy...

if you are really into single player and think sins doesnt have anything else to offer you then design a 50 star map and put on 11 computers on hard all teamed up against you.. even with the ai in the program now you would be crushed :-) Trust me...
