I agree that this "update" is ridiculous. But one has to realize that Christians don't believe that one goes to Hell if one commits a sin. But that's not this discussion, so let's keep it out, eh?

So how does one cause poverty? By making money? Gimme a break. Is that financial gluttony? Gimme another break, not to mention a KitKat. What is Social injustice? Is it related to causing poverty?
Also, how does one differentiate between genetic modification and human experimentations, if the former is based on humans as well?

This is clearly a political statement rather than a religious one. Though I agree with most of the things listed anyway, I would ask questions like "At what point does making money become gluttony?" The list is so vague that the Pope could condemn anyone for committing one of those sins - and the thing is, the list is undefined enough that it becomes a matter of opinion.

Perhaps this is what I don't understand: Does "all souls" include the people who happen to belong to the correct religion? Because if not, then that's about right. It's not a particularly unreasonable statement, if you ask me. But, then, that's just me.

EDIT: My point takes for granted the fact that no more than one religion may be correct, simply because they all, or most of them, are incompatible.

There is no correct religion.
Example:
Believers of religion A will suffer in the hell of religion B because thats the punishment imposed in religion B for unbelievers.
Believers of religion B will suffer in the hell of religion A for the same reasons.
Question:
Is there only one hell?

Yeah but these seven were put into the category of mortal sins, most others are just minor sins.

I like it, it gives you more to choose from.

There's a BIG difference between a sin in the eyes of God, and socially unacceptable behavior.

Personally, I'm not a fan of organized religion. It's become too much like a business. However, I have my own personal beliefs, views, and religion that shares a lot of the positives from the religion I grew up with and a couple of other religions. Do some soul searching and ask tough, unanswerable questions to yourself and you might just find out more than you ever expected.


Those have been made illegal in the USA. We used to have some nearby at a courthouse and cemetery, but they disappeared admist a ton of controversy.

Of course, I'm trying to be funny here. I'm doing so because I think people (not you) get too hypersensitive about religions things, life, possessions, and all that that it blinds them.

First off I'd like to show how grateful I am of all you people for being so sophisticated about this subject; no one has made any insults to any religions or people. Bravo. I haven't seen a forum with this much sophistication since... nevermind... Anyway.

I think I lean on the side of ZJBDragon here; not such a big fan of organized religion. My beliefes happen to be based on an organized religion, but I do not actively participate in what one would call a "church." Religion has become a bit of a business; the evidence of such is shown in the one that reads: No pulluting the environment. Watch a few commercials, especially the ones for energy sources; even coal says they don't polute anymore. I swear, I'm sick of seeing that generic, meaningless phrase we protect the environment through better choices for cleaner processes. It seems like a ploy to cover up some of the other problems the church has had lately. I won't be the one to bring them up however. Someone else mentioned the distinction between religious doctrine and societal taboo; there is a difference, it's very important to realize this. I'd like to mention that I heard this next part from someone else, but can't think of who. Those who follow (or base their beliefs on) an organized religion such as Catholasism, Christianity (the only difference between the two being practiced tradition and funny hats), Judaism, whathaveyou, do not need the rules written down in the "Seven/Fourteen Deadly Sins," I have a book that wrote it all out already: The Bible. When leaders say they need to update the rules for a new modern time, they commit the herasy they condemn others of: challenging the infalability of God.

I don't want to make the argument that one religion is more correct than another, but it's important for me, for everyone, whether they practice the religion or not, to understand that just because the pope says there are new rules, does not mean the rules are just or needed. I know not to impoverish others or to commit social injustice; I'd like to hope that any who practice these religions, and even those who don't, know to make the right choices on their own. To sum it all up: if we have to be told not to sin, following the set rules does not make us rightous; only when we chose to follow the rules out of our own hearts are we rightous.

Sorry, that was kinda sappy at the end there, but you get the point. I hope. Thank's again for being so sensitive about the issue and showing respect for others beliefs. I'm truly amazed how itelligent and sophisticated these forums are.

The fact is, people, and it seems some high-up people, lose the essence of what Christianity is - simple faith. This is why some of you guys (and certainly quite understandably) think it's become a business. This is a downright blatant political statement. There's nothing Godly here. And who is the Pope to tell us these things? How can a man dictate what a mortal sin is? Shouldn't that be up to God?

I noticed alot when taking courses in college, that ALOT of different religions are based off so much similiarities that its not even funny, everyone believes certain things, and as so many years go by, their views end up becoming a new religion, w/e you call, whoever you call it, there is one supreme being that has done alot of stuff for alot of different people.
