Fleet Cohesion? What do you use it for?

Title says it all,

Certain Utility cruiser buffs have a kind of short casting range, so I can see the point of tight cohesion when you want to use those guys... but then why not just set tight cohesion as the default?

Under what circumstances do you use tight, normal, and loose fleet cohesion?

I imagine loose formation would help to avoid getting ravaged too badly by things like Malice/Brilliance but in reality, no. I for one have never touched it.

It is how far apart you want your ship to be I think

I use these formations quite often, especially when I have support cruisers in my fleet. The tight cohesion really helps maximize these abilities, and the looser formations also help when you have lots of enemies to attack. Even if your target range is set to "gravity well", the ships in the fleet will only stray a certain distance from the flagship before being ordered to regroup. So if your enemy has lots of ships and structures, looser formations allows you to attack lots of these at once while tighter formation is good for either "local area" or "hold position" fighting against larger numbers (ie massive pirate fleets).

Tight or even normal fleet cohesion is not always good... Let's say, you have a TEC fleet of 10 Heavy Cruisers and 5 Repair Cruisers. Due to their low range, the Heavy Cruisers will fly close towards enemy units. Normally, the Repair Cruisers would stay away from the action, but with a tight fleet cohesion they can't.

I dunno, even in loose I've watched my hoshiko rush a battleship without orders... makes me not want to even research demolition bots.

cohession can be very usefull, imagine 50 kodiaks vs 50 kodiaks, with all the ships close together they "bumb" up eachother.. they sometimes fly in a large cricles and dont shoot for like 20 seconds

if you already orderred your ships 2 fly in-formation far apart then the chance they'll bumb onto eachother is smaller.... alot

only scenario i've been able 2 use it in thusfar....

I usually only use tight formations. It seems like all my ships need to stick close together, get close to the enemy and just obliterate them. It's quite fun.

This is true, but when you use it with carrier ships, the carriers them selves still stay completely out of battle while the other ships do the work. I noticed this when using the Vasari. However if you have a few good protective capital ships, your support ships can survive quite a while.

but if you want you carriers to stay away, why not just put them ina seperate fleet?
