Star Trek Online -MMORPG- is in development!

It's being developed by Cryptic Studios and you can access their website here to see for yourself.

http://www.crypticstudios.com/

It's going to take place during the most "current" time period (like during Picard's/Janeway's time it seems).

I for one and am excited by also worried that it's going to be developed for the console too.  That may result in some major dumbing down of gameplay due to the limitations (real or imaginary) of being a console game.  I'm a sucker for a Star Trek MMO though and will definitely be trying it out!

too bad that can't even make a good single player game based on ST :NOTSURE:

There are some, and they've been around for years.

Star Fleet Command II: Orion Pirates still has a community (albeit small now compared to the glory days of GSA) that does campaigns and such.

I thought there were 3 really good ones.

Birth of the Federation, Bridge Commander and some other old one were you control the enterprise and track some mystery thingy down.

I hope this isn't anything like EVE. I played EVE for a little while. I found it extremely confusing and boring :P

Also I DEMAND TRIBBLES!!!!

Well, since this thread got dug back up, here's a very recent interview about STO from Cryptic:

Basicly: World War 3 with China will have been over for a year by the time this game comes out. But thats a good thing (not world war 3, the time frame). They might actualy do something good. Its VERY good that Perpetualy Incompetent died, their ideas and implemtation was flawed from the begining (they had barely started and they had dropped all the interesting features - not a good sign!).

As it is, if the get the basic fundamentals right (ship control, away team/squad combat, walking around your larger ships, real item ecomony), this should get a solid user base and that means solid profits. Order your money trucks now Cryptic.

I agree, Perpetual Entertainment was not getting anywhere with Star Trek Online, as perpetual feature creeping essentially had the project stagnate with no real evidence of a functioning game. All they had was renders of a non-working game, large amounts of concept art (public and private), and a lot of text trying to explain the game -- that was altered irregularly.

Cryptic Studios in significantly less time has managed to actually show a functioning game, forums, a trailer, and more out to the public then PE did in three-years. At least now, the fans/readers feel like they aren't repeating the same mistake of following another blunder going nowhere.

On the other hand, I am rather excited to see a new Star Trek game that is not restricting itself to ruthless Trek canon and is actually introducing new material.

Yeah, well they're scrapping all of PE's assets and showing a trailer in 8 months. That doesn't scream quality to me..

In the interview, they basically said that PE didn't really have any assets :P

They are using an existing engine, so they've gotten some gameplay footage in. The graphics obviously aren't super advanced, but not terribly ugly either.

Umm no idea if this is new but here's an FAQ. WWW Link

EDIT: I just watched the trailer. I have no idea how old that is :P But it does look good (Yay big battles with Federation vs the Borg). For the "final" trailer they need to get Shatner or Stewart though.

The trailer is a few days old, it was released along with the interview I linked. The FAQ appeared yesterday or the day before. ;)

Ok, sorry to post old new :P I thought it was just an interview that I didn't really feel like reading at the moment...

Few days isn't really that old news, especially since most of this stuff is not very widely publicized :)

The FAQ definitely sounds interesting, and the interview you should actually read. It basically says you'll be the ship's captain, and you'll be able to get unique crew members for your ship (which can give you bonuses), and you'll be able to take them on away missions and stuff. So there's going to be ground and space combat, apparently.

Hate to bump a 3 month old thread but the website says it will definitely be for both PC and console. What a bust.

IMO we havent had a good ST game since Interplay died. The license has bounced around since then. I thought Bethsoft had all the rights to ST so I dunno.
