How do you use them for travel?

I've noticed ships from other factions using wormholes for what looks like travel between sytems (i.e. stars). They fly to the middle of the wormhole and disappear and sometimes ships will appear in a wormhole gravity well. However, nothing happens when I send my ships to the center of a wormhole. I tried looking for a research category dealing with this ability and found nothing. Does anyone know how to use wormholes for travel?

There is a research tech for each race in the Civilian tree for wormhole travel. It varies in position for each race, but it looks like the wormhole graphic that you see when you look at its grav well (the bluish outer ring with a bright spot in the middile), with a diagonal arrow going over it.
