Well, now that I know to expect a max, I'll do a better job at fleet composition. Also, I got an unlucky random map, with no choke points - so I had to send smaller fleets all over the place.

Discovered one trick though. When I withdrew a large fleet back 1 planet away from a frontier planet, the AI attacked with a smaller fleet (or maybe a less powerful one) and I was able to move back in and wipe them out. Had I done this a few times (and the AI didn't "learn"), could have eaten a big hole in the AI fleets.

There is actually a way to increase your fleet size.
It's either for the Vasari or Advent, but one can research an upgrade outside of fleet logistics that increases your ship cap by 8% (or more... can't remember if it has multiple levels).

Phasic Transmissions for Vasari. Two levels at 7.5% per level.

Hmmm... I've just started playing the game and I'm a little confused about this Fleet size thing. The most I can build is/was 13 - Either cruisers or Frigates. I went to attack the nearby enemy plant and it was swarming with ships. Made my 13 look a little... puny...

I am missing something here? I maxed out all Warfare and Tactical research and gave up bothering with the last levels of civil research as there really wasn't much else I could do.

Don't worry about getting an even bigger fleet.

Build a ton of shipyards and start grinding him down with a relentless onslaught.

Kill a TEC player/computer for me, we'll call it even.

 

Killing TEC is like destroying Gnomes in wow PvP it never gets old.

 

Even when your the TEC its like MMMMMMMMM tec killing time.

unlike JC i had the same problem as him but dont copy his line of thinking (no offence JC) the problem with his solution is that its wrong.e.g the advent send medium scouting parties abit like raids really also the vasari do this with planet killing ships. THEY ALWAYS HAVE A MOTHER FLEET! this is comprized of heavy upgraded battleships. if your TEC then your scout ships have atomatic explore you just really have to turn it on... you see unlike JC's methods I always base my priorities on facts,explored planets,defence strategy and 2-3 prong attack menouvers

Hint:when you first start build the CAP-ship yard your first battleship is free on all species i always pic the KOL because it can handle more in the begining why dont you send a first strike for their home world it wont take long its more or less a risky untested plan.

if you have too many heavy battle cruisers then self terminate them and buy the battle frigates they take are able to double the amount of the fleet size and are very powerful in groups.

hint:If your TEC thenCobalts are deadly to fleets that require amounts of antimatter which is basically every shipit just requires the research.
