When zoomed out to the border between the gravity well view and the "just the planet" view, there is some black "fuzz" around the planet, as shown in this image. While playing, it "fuzzes" around a bit, making it stand out somewhat. It is not terribly irritating, but is kind of strange and weird.

I suspect that it is the "little flying cars zooming around the planet" animation viewed from far enough away that it becomes individual pixels moving around randomly. I seem to recall that in the original, the flying cars simply were not displayed at that zoom level.
