Multiplayer Games:
We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

The times are:
4pm EST (9pm GMT) Saturdays & Sundays
9pm EST (2am GMT)
Saturdays & Sundays

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Lore:
We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Please visit our website and for more information, change logs, downloads, and to report bugs. Our website can be found here: http://distantstars.mmobase.com

Open the user.setting file (using Notepad, Wordpad or any text editor) and scroll down to the bottom 7 lines from the bottom is the line:
LogOutput FALSE
Change FALSE to TRUE
LogOutput TRUE

and from then on any Log files will be saved to the debug folder:
Windows Vista/Windows 7:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug

C:\Documents and settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug

If you get these log files to us (you can just paste them in to a forum post) we can hopefully get your issues sorted.

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

As for changing up the Diplomatic tree, I was thinking that specialized directions of alliance could be made. TEC can have 'reparations' to better their standing with Advent. Advent can have 'common enemy' to better their standing with Vasari. Vasari can have 'slave release' to better their standing with the TEC. I'd really have to sit down and hammer out ideas with you guys to come up more for such a tree.
End of quote

There is already a tech that removes all racial penlties at least for the TEC.

If we can, 4 new pacts would be nice per race. But honestly that or new Envoy skills based on having pacts research would be the only things I can think of that we could do well.

Maybe if we turned the OP into some kind of web comic with lots of pictures instead of words it would get looked at. =D
End of quote

You sir, just won a beer. From Carbon's personal stash. This idea must be done! If only I could draw....well. X|

Quoting Ryat, reply 3195
@ llamaguy42 - are you guys connected LAN, you might want to try copying yours over to his (or use a little handy drive thing  the mod is only 200+ MB so it should be doable)
End of Ryat's quote
Like I said, we did try to copy the files from one computer to the other - and it still didn't work!

On another note, since you've released an update for the Entrenchment version, is an update for Diplomacy on the way? =)

i think the pirates are way too powerfull...

can anyone tell me, how i can change the "Pirate Base" into the normal pirate base of soase?
PN please

hmm..

so, I downloaded 7zip, and made it so that the mod and the patch moth are set to open with 7z914, but when I right-click there's no option to unzip, just Open. When I hit open, the computer requests administrator permission to open. When I give it admin permission, it installs 7zip, closes, and then nothing happens.

I'm lost, tbh.

sounds like you set the association of the 7z files to the 7z INSTALLER not the 7z file manager (7zFM.exe)

HELL YEAH!

Thanks everybody!

Harpo: That did the trick! (though, I feel stupid now...)

Stant: Thanks! You got me through 90% of this!

Ryat: Muchas Gracias mi compadre!

Umm, quick question.

What exactly does DS change? I just played a few matches (On a randomly generated map), looked around for about 25 minutes, and didn't see anything different.  The only differences I noted was how much faster the game played, and that the previously "Arctic Exploitation" and "Volcanic Exploitation" had been changed to "Tropic" and "Hostile".  All I saw was the typical Terran, Desert, Astreroid, Gas Giant, etc. etc.  The pirates weren't even upgraded, yet it sayed that the Distant Stars mod had been enabled...

so... did I do something wrong, or am I just that surrounded by fail with this?

No capital ships in the pirate's grav well?  Is the checksum the same as the one listed here?  36672790

You should see lots of changes in the research, primarily in the form of twice as much research and a few extras.  As for the planets, on random maps, it's just a random draw for what you get.  You may have been unlucky in the sense you got mostly old planets, however, lucky in the sense you got gas giants which is what most people complain about not having.

As for the other things that changed, you could wait for the web comic that explains it all, or you could venture over to the DS Wiki and browse through the pages there and see what you should be seeing.  Well, most of what you should be seeing since it was set up for diplomacy and entrenchment has less content.

No, the checksum was 151 something something.

I'm redownloading it, but that does kinda irk me that after all this, there's still more.   Guess that's just my unlucky fault, tho.

lolz

Double check to make sure it's activated, that was my mistake when it wasn't working right for me.  Been a long time since I used a MOD before DS.  If the maps don't have names that start with DS on a lot of them, then it's not active.

Also, the music should be different.

Alright, now that I have that sorted out, the checksum is 36672790, but now I minidump after I hit apply changes...I minidump.

Xer0 \^/

Got past that problem, NOW whenever I hit apply changes it just goes black, then a pop up says that "Sins of a Solar Empire has Stopped Working, Windows is checking for a Solution to the Problem..."

Xer0 \^/

Apparently, the DS mod combined with normal Sins is too much for my box.

Checked the Performance on Task Manager while running Entrenchment, the stats were:

CP Usage jumped from 00-01 to 56-58

Memory Jumped from 802 MB to 1.18-1.24 GB

Xer0 \^/

have you brought your settings down one notch? I find that killing skyboxes also helps a lot. Do this BEFORE activating the mod.

one notch?

I have all the graphics settings on "Low", but the skyboxes are still enabled, lemme go fix that.

Xer0 \^/

Oh, hot damn.

As I'm trying to apply changes, the CPU usage skyrockets to 84%+

Okay, now it just minidumps, rather than having the pop-up appear.

EDIT\\\ Cancel the above, it does both.

Xer0 \^/

Yeah, sounds like you're crashing due to high memory demands, reduce everything down as far as you feel comfortable doing.  I run everything at low since I don't micromanage very much and spend more time looking at the bigger picture running fleets in 4 or 5 different directions then up close and personal.  You will crash at some point while playing so make sure your autosave is on.

Edit: If you have a lower end system, you may have to wait until some of the more wasted resource hogs are removed.

how much RAM do you have, and do you have anything else running in the background (the next update will have a lot of reworking done to help with all of that)

Have trimmed your Empire tree also?

And get rid of the bloom effect and undo....  Yeah, just undo everything that makes the game pretty.  She'll look like the same old girl without make-up, but with some nice upgrades in the right places.  *wink wink*

Carbon: nope, I'm gonna try that next.

Ryat: I have Task manager, and a few files running in the back.

Stant: Everything, but the Empire Tree, is on low.

All: I've tried every method I can think of in applying this mod, so now I have to ask: whenever I enable the Patch and the Mod at the same time, the checksum is 371***, instead of 36672790.  When I do just the Patch, it's 15***. When I do just the Mod, it's 36672790. When I put the file for the patch IN the file for the mod, then install, the number is 36672790. I presume that this is the correct method?

Xer0 \^/

LOL, see I must be lucky. I can have the right upgrades plus some of that make-up. And btw, I hear by knight you Sir make some more damn comics. Congrats Stant.
