'Entrenchment' causing game crash on start

Hi all,

I prepurchased Entrenchment and installed it via Impulse. I then updated the game to the latest version. After doing this, Sins was crashing on launch with a minidump.

After reading some other threads on possible causes/issues, I updated my graphics & sound drivers and reinstalled the latest copy of DX10. Now when I try to start the game I get a black screen, which minimises, then a 'Sins has encountered an error and needs to close' message, but no minidump.

Interestingly, I got no Beta warning when downloading/installing Entrenchment- I only got the collector's boxed edition a week or so ago so have not been following the development progress. I believe that a warning is a standard part of the install process for Entrenchment?

The game was working well up until Entrenchment was installed, now nothing. I am going to uninstall Entrenchment if possible and see if this fixes the problem. If not then I will uninstall/reinstall the whole game from scratch and see if thaat works.

I'll let you all know how it goes. If anyone has any other advice I'd appreciate it.

My system:

CPU: E8400 dualcore

Mobo: Asus P5KPL/1600

Graphics: Asus EN9800GT Hybridpower

OS: WinXP Pro SP3

Entrenchment uninstalled via Control Panel -> Add/remove software.

Repair done from install disc menu.

Game now crashes on startup, with a minidump.

Will now try full uninstall/reinstall.

Full uninstall via Control Panel -> Add/remove software.

Full reinstall from disc complete.

Game still crashes on startup with minidump.

Hmmm.

Update graphics drivers to 181.20. No dice.

Changed windows display settings to 'best performance' (no icon shadows, transparency effects, fadeouts on desktop etc). No dice.

Now running SOASE update to 1.12 from 1.00 via Impulse. Hopes are high but time will tell.

In the meantime I'm getting a nice little collection of minidump files...

Upgrade to 1.12 complete, game launch via Impulse successful.

Game launch via Start menu successful.

Game launch via desktop shortcut successful.

Will now reinstall Entrenchment and have a look for the error again.

Entrenchment install complete, game now runs.

Likely cause of error: install of Entrenchment prior to upgrade to 1.12. Not confirmed but I'll be darned if I want to waste another couple of hours seeing if I can replicate the problem!

If anyone else has a similar issue, please try the following:

-Upgrade all sound and graphics drivers

-Update DirectX to latest version

-Full uninstall of SOASE

-Full reinstall of SOASE

-Patch to 1.12 (or latest version)

-Install Entrenchment

-Reboot system and enjoy.

I hope that this info helps someone out- it's taken me a few hours to sort, hopefully it'll save someone else a few hours!

Yes, upgrading a non-patched Sins will cause issues.

I recieved this error by upgrading original SOASE from 1.05 to 1.12. Will several of the steps you mentioned here and post back to let you know how it worked. Sound drivers up to date, display drivers 1 version behind since the new driver was from march. If that doesnt work I will attempt uninstall/reinstall from disk (1.00) then Impulse upgrade to 1.16.

Full uninstall reinstall did not work. I uninstalled again then deleted old files left behind manually then reinstalled. This time it worked on 1.00, upgraded to newest version via impulse and now all is well.
