Sometimes retcons are inevitable and useful to just fix plot holes or technical inadequacies: the 2001 sequels had some premises slightly altered as space research revealed new information about other planets, and Metroid fixed some of the Engrish that resulted in nonsensical canon from the first game. But if you're going to try to retcon plot, 1) make sure you are taking something bad and making it good, not the other way around, and 2) have the brains to do what I do and completely twist everything backwards while remaining WITHIN the strictures of factual canon.

banned for Star Trek was kinda screwed anyway. The last two series' didn't do it any favors. You can't hope for much without the coming of an inspired producer like the most recent run of Doctor Who.
