Forum Update - June 2, 2009

Hello everyone!

I just pushed an update to the forums with some heavy performance improvements done to the backend by our database engineer.  A lot of things were changed, so I don't expect this update to be perfect.  Please take a look around, and if you notice any problems or any areas that could use another performance boost, let me know here!

There were also other, minor changes made to the design and back-end structure of the forums.  Most of these are miniscule, so I won't bother to list them, but anything that seems off or wrong is definitely a bug, so be sure to let me know here or via PM!

On the  Recent Post page, when I try to click on the Go to Last Read Reply arrow, the icon shifts back and forth, making it difficult to click on. Anyone else noticed this?

'scuse me? Are we even seeing the same thing??? Does it have a black background? Or does it have a clear background and a glowing border? Can you post a picture of it?

Black background? One is just slightly larger than the other.

ooooh

wait.

You must be posting from a different message board. Sins has a black background, eh?

From our end, they are both just transparent-looking.

I thought you meant your old old one, you know, the silver pointy thing with the blue in the middle (I have no idea what it was!) and then you changed it to what you have now.

Like BigAboTT said, one is just a little bit bigger than the other, although, again, like he said, its probably because we are looking at it from the Sins site.

OK, that's wierd. Looks like everone can see it BUT me on my replies.

This is what I see:

Apparantly, it shows up for everyone else..... I'm gonna mess around with it.

I'm guessing HTML has been screwed up at reply 6

I don't see any problems on that page. You said you were using IE6, correct? I'll have to go back and test it on there again.

Just checked the thread out (at work) - that link now works...

Go figure

BTW - I had seen this on another thread, but can't remember what it was to see if it is also fixed

Yes! I usually end up click on the last page - 1. So I try to click on 'last page' and I end up clicking on '6', because of this weird shifty thing. When I hover over the last page the 'link mouse cursor' doesn't show up, and when I move it does, so I click it, but it is actually linking to an earlier page then.

gunslinger the double post in the my posts page appears to have been fixed

thanks

What browsers and OS are you guys on?  Someone here at Stardock told me the same thing and they were on Win7 and IE8.  Is that true for you as well?

It's likely that it was cached for you.  Keep in mind that we have upped the cache a bit, so it will appear to be your old one for a while until the cache clears.

Yes, I am on W7.

Also I found 2 bugs, but I have to go to work now so I will post later tonight (EU time). Also, I'd still LOVE to use alt+s to send the post. Dunno if I can fix it but currently MSIE8 gives me the Safety menu when I do that. Dunno if MSIE8 should be 'fixed' or the forum should be 'fixed'.

[edit]

quick edit. other internet pages can use alt+s to post, so should be able here. I hope you'll be nice enough to add this quick feature for me =)

No more updates - my nerves are getting frayed ;p

I'll look into the issue with IE8/Win7 soon.  I'll also see about using Alt+S or Ctrl+S to post as it's been requested often.

Next small bug:

Icon missing

As you can see the icon is missing (or did you not make an icon at all?). Now ofcourse it might not be a forum bug but something on my end, but a hard refresh and cache clear (well does the same thing basically) does not help. I do see an icon for topics that have a new reply. Might have been a post about this earlier, I don't know.

[edit:] Actually after viewing again I think this is on purpose? The 'empty icon' links to a space.gif and when I manually open it in my picture viewer it's nothing but a small white dot. In the page above it's probably stretched to predetermined dimensions.

Second bug:

Now this is really a forum bug, I am sure :) Topics you replied in that have a new post turn bold and get the new icon. However, when a topic has new replies that I don't care about I click "mark all posts as read", so that every thread is considered read and I don't get distracted by a new post in a thread that I don't care about. However after I click the link the page reloads and it's fine. BUT when I close the browser and come back some other time, the topics are bold again, considered not read. I thought I remembered someone saying you have to read the topic twice for it to be considered read, not sure it was here but that doesn't really matter, so I clicked "mark all topics as read" again, but the same thing happened. I did this for like 5 times in a row but every time I come back to the "my replies" page the topics are bold again. It will stay this way untill I actually read the topic. Small thing to worry about, I know, but it's still a bug which I encounter quite often.

I figured I should test some more in the same session, to see if it's a cookie problem, but no one reponds to threads I posted in so I can't check :p

For the icon issue: can you recall if it was always that way?  It looks like if a post has not been read it adds the icon, and if it has it doesn't.  Wonder if I should keep it that way...

As for your second problem, I'll try to Mark Posts Read a little later and see what happens.

Wow, nice quick replay :) (edit: lol, whut?! replay? REPLY, god I need some coffee)

I'm not sure when the icon thing started, but it certainly has always been like this since I first noticed the problem. Then again I read many forums and usually see very little of the page before I click to the next so I can't really say anything for sure.

EDIT: o, it didnt bring the picture along. o well, ull hav to look bak up at ur post.

Aye that's what I figured by now and what Bara confirmed. It feels a bit off though, like I said like an image file is missing from the server. Most boards use a simpler icon or some greyed out form on one to denote posts with no reply. As I understand now it's not a bug, just lack of a feature ;) It's okay, I'm not sweating the small stuff, I was just wondering if something was wrong with the image files.

[edit] the "my replies" page thing and the "mark all topics as read" link seem to work well together now. I'll recheck later. :)

it is irritating

harpoQuoting soasertsus, reply 2Ok, some how all my posts got cloned! Some are doubled or tripled, but I have one that got cloned like 8 times! I assume this happened when the forums got updated but I would like to know if anyone else has had the problem and maybe someone knows why.

How is it now?
