Need help with ship names

Hey I am currently working on a faction which will use 30 frigates, yes 30. As I am not that good at giving names I was hoping that some out there could help. 15 of the frigates will be buildable (so still 3 spots avaible ;)) and split into 3 classes frigate, cruiser and capital. Each class can be upgraded to a better version with more abilities and better stats. Since I also haven't come up with all abilities I wouldn't mind if you guys came with some ideas :). The faction is kind of a for fun faction so you would be able to rage a one man war against the rest of the galaxy (ok maybe a 2 man), so don't hold back because it is to overpowered or "crazy". Please do keep in mind that this faction can't build modules, it only has a starting star base/mothership (only factory avaible) and some others that can be deployed in new gravitywells, and the race also can't colonize.

 

The frigates will be structured like this:

 

Original ship name -> upgraded version name

Role

the original will have these abilites

- Ability 1

- ABility 2

the upgraded version will have an improved version of the original + these 2

- Ability 3 

- Ability 4

 

Frigate -> David (could use a better name xD)

 

Stinger ->

Role Anti-fighter

- Missileswarm

Fire a volley of mssiles on 6 (lvl 1) targets.

- Repel fighters

Creates a negative mangetic field (pushes instead of pulling) keeping enemy fighters at a safe distance.

Settler ->

"colonizer"

- Deploy siegeturret

Deploys a huge siegeturret which makes it impossible to colonize the planet until it is destroyed.

- Capture neutral

As the normal capture ability, except that Davids also will be able to capture enemies.

- Deploy phase gate

Deploys a Phase gate when it becomes too mutch to travel from your homeplanet.

- Deploy Resource center

Enables to finally get more resources.

 

Hunter -> Striker

Harassment

- Deamaterialize

Destroys itself and enters the capital ship, module or star base damageing it over time. Respawns after the targets death. 

- Ion lasers

The special powered lasers makes the normal attack disable the enemy frigates for a set time.

- (needs name)

Normal weapons deal damage over time.

Viper -> Heros

Sniper

- Charged Weapon

The dps will increase every 10 secounds.

- Cutting Beam

Gives a change to penetrate the enemy shield

- Critical Hit

Gives a change to instantly kill the target

- Concentrated Beam

Other Heros can concentrate on a single Heros to make it fire faster.

 

Explorer ->

Scout

- Deploy Outpost

Deploys a outpost which can detect nearby phasejumping units.

- Auto explore

the same as other scouts.

- Detect mines

the same as other scouts.

Transporter

- Unload

Unload loaded units and restores all of its antimatter

- Load

Loads units on the ship and heals them delpeting some antimatter

- Teleport

Teleports to a planet already occupied by a star base.

- Upgrade

Summons the next class of transporter capable of loading the next tier or more of current.

- Shield

Uses a powerfull shield which

 

Cruiser -> Goliad

 

 -> Nexus

Anti-module

- EMP Blast

Disables all surrounding enemies for a time.

- Dismantle

Damage and disable the module while extracting the resources from it.

- Multi targeting

Enables the Goliad to target more then one structure at a time

- Beam Net

Fires a beam on all modules which "bounces" on all other modules. Basicly all modules in the gravitywell is damaged and the more there are the more damage will each take.

 

Disruptor -> Overseer

Manipulator

- Shut down

Drasticly decreses the power output of the engines (60% + 5 per lvl) from all frigates in the area (10000) giving a good defence stance for long range units against close range units.

- Overpower weaponry

Increases the damage of all frigates within the range of 10.000 making shut down even more effective for long rnaged units.

- Spy

Constantly explores a planet so you can spy on a specific planet.

- Overseer

Explore all planets for a few secounds giving and idea of enemy players progression.

Tank

- Powered systems

Will deal more damage the longer it is attacked.

- Kinetic shield

Shield will be immune to damage, but the shield generator (hull) will take some damage when attacked.

- Absorb damage

Makes damage heal your hull instead of hurt you for a set time.

- Forced targeting

forces nearby enemies to target the unit.

 

Capital -> Titan

 

Freedom -> Evolution

Carrier

- Nanite fighters

Uses fighters that are so small that they can't be damaged, this however also limits the power of the fighters.

- Disarm Planet

Sends small invasion ships to remove the supressers and free it inhabitants without killing them in the process.

- Teleport fighters

Teleports allfighters in the gravityfield to an other dimension for some time.

- Overpowered nanites

Nanites with overpowered weapons destroying themself on their first shot.

 

Squadrons

- Nanites/drones

Not very powerfull, but can still be a thread as they can not be targeted.

- Dismantlers

disables the target while slowly tearing it apart.

- Overpowered Nanites

Fires a more powerfull beam which destroys themselves in the process.

 

Eradicator -> Ragnarok

Dreadnought/AoE

- Heavy Beam

Fires a powerfull beam which deals damage to all targets in the row.

- Tractor Beam

Fires a beam which disables the targets engines and attract nearby enemies to it.

- Rapidfiring weapons

the longer the weapons fire the faster the cooldown rate will be.

- Ultimatum

Fires a beam which deals equal damage to the ragnarok and the target untill one of them is destroyed.

 

 Cleanser -> Zeus

(What do you need interstellar deplomicy for when you have) Interstellar artillery.

- Siege Mode

Enables the use of artillery.

- Assoult Pod

Fires an Assoult pod on an enemy planet to liberate it, no matter the distance.

- Beam artillery

Targets 10/20/30 frigates in the gravity well.

- Heavy beam Artillery

Targets 1/2/3 capitals in the gavity well.

 

 -> Paladin

Support

- Offensive boost

Temporally boost the performance of nearby friendlies weapons.

- Share damage aura

Make all friendly units within range share the damage they recieve.

- Shield aura

Boosts the regeneration of nearby friendly shields.

- Repair drones

Fighter who doesn't have any weapons, but has an ability which can repair hulls.

here's an idea although maybe it would be considered more of a super weapon than a frigate

Name- Genesis

Role- Anti Fleet/Planet

Fires a massive "gamma ray" lazer capable of taking out multiple ships at once or even a planet in a single shot though in all fairness it should have a massive cooldown time. may also be able to fire from one planet to another (similar to the Tec Novalith cannon but is capable of movement)

Ability 1- Cloaking

although it can cloak it should be forced to de-cloak about 15 seconds BEFORE it fires (Simulating that it has to divert power from cloaking so it can charge the massive amount of energy required to fire. also it should not be able to recloak for a full minute after firing. essentially cloaking not so much as beneficial to combat as much as it helps to meerly move from place to place undetected.

Ability 2- Hangar defense.  After all, you wouldn't to leave this weapon undefended

This idea isn't entirely original,  if you Image search on google for "gundam genesis" you'll see what this weapon should look like.  original or not, it's still an idea though.

also, if you like i could build a 3d model for you although you may have to do the UV mapping (coloring) yourself.

Actually I already made something like this xD. The Yggdrasil (mothership) can upgrade to a superweapon. The upgrade has 9 stages and the weapon wil be avaible at the last stage (not sure if it should also require a research). Its a beam weapon/ability which can target any planet and will destroy everything in the gravitywell including own/friendly units.

And also thx for offering the 3d model. Currently the ships looks/originality almost deal more damage then their weapons xD.

I have however close to no knowledge or skills when it comes to modelling and skinning (such as uv-mapping). SO i would still only be halfway. I haven't gone on any modeller hunt yet since I have a tendency to mod in a period and then have a long pause, so I wanted to be as close to finished as possible so I wouldn't make anyone waste their work.

ok, well let me know if you need my help modeling anything.  as far as UV mapping (or skinning) I DO have the know how and ability (to apply the textures anyway) but since my "artistic" skills are somewhat lacking the textures i use usually turn out lousy.  If you do decide you want my help send me a PM.

Actually i do have a model i've been working on just for fun (about 3 hours worth of work)

you might find it interesting

sorry the image quality is low.  basically it's a giant gun with an engine of the capital ship class.  It's most powerful weapon is at the very front and if you can't tell where that is it's the gun muzzel looking part right above the colored x/y/z markers in the top right view. it also carries 4 double barrel cannons, 2 on each side. and 20 "anti air" auto cannons scattered around it's hull. and although not very visible in this shot, right above the rear double barrel cannons on either side is the docking bay for fighters/bombers and the bridge is located just below the main cannon in the front.  you cna't see them in these shots but there are 2 massive engines in the back. it isn't textured and the model it's self i wouldn't consider complete but that's a matter of opinion. 

all the waepons fire solid rounds or large "bullets" except for the main cannon which should be laser based. After all, with it's size, how many shots could it possibly hold.

I'll be watching this thread for a little while longer to see what happens here.

oh, and due to something i read in another forum, 30 frigates may not be possible.  If i remember right it was said that the limit is 9 of each class of ship (capital, frigate, and cruiser). although combined the total will be close to 30 you'll probably have to divide them between those classes.

not sure how accurate this info is but you may have to check it out.

Actually, as I said, only the 15 will be constructed. The limit is as MacKnightt says doe to a limit in the space on the construction page where there can be 9 on each page. Because these are made from a star base which would be the same as a normal factory, except I can increase the build rate through upgrades :), there  is only 2 avaibel pages, the frigate page and the cruiser page which means a total of 18 spots (still leaving 3 spaces free). The last 15 will be spawned from an ability which becomes avaible on the original ship once the research for the upgraded ship has reached level 1. Since frigates spawned by abilities don't have to be listed anywhere besides the entity.manifest it doesn't have ny influence on the buildlimit.

But thx for warning me could see myself working my butt off for some weeks just to not be able to use half of it QQ.

Also thx for offerring your help it's really apreciated especially with the few modellers there are in the sins modding community, but as I said, I want to be sure that almost everything is done before involving others so that they don't waste hours of work on nothing :).

btw. your model looks interesting, though I have a hard time imaging a way that it would fit with this faction

One thing i did notice when i textured this one is "Apparently" Mod tool, being the free version of XSI, decreases the quality of the textures once you run rendermap (combine all the various textured used into 1 single image) as well as add the annoying dotted lines along the sides.  Likely their attempt to get you to buy the full version. before i ran rendermap the texture i used for the hull of the ship was much better looking, it kinda looked like the ship was covered with all kinds of plates and panels, kindalike this:

 but now the textures are blurred so it just looks grey...  I'm looking into better texturing programs.  Maybe deep paint 3d, last time i used it was about a decade ago and it seemed ok back then so i'm sure it's top notch now.  Just not looking foward to buying the full version of that either...

Oh, that is annoying. The texture looks quite interesting. well good luck on finding a suitable program :).

Btw what version did you use of xsi? I think the version 6,5 that you can find in danmans toolpack was before it got bought by autodesk and it might not have this force to buy feature.

lol, the version i used before mod tool was back in school, bought and paid for. If I remember right, at the time it was somewhere around a $3,000 program. One interesting note (although not particularly usefull) is the activation key, where for most programs is about 16 digits, it was about 2 pages.:omg:   Try hacking that:grin: .  I don't think any other version of softimage (it's previous name) allows use without buying.  I will, however, look into it further. 

Another program, i believe i mentioned earlier, is Deep paint 3d (also used back in those college days) was MUCH different than applying textures normally. Imagine using a regular image editor (eg. Photoshop, Gimp, or even Mario paint:P )  only instead of "Painting" on a flat object like normal, you load your 3d "Object" and paint DIRECTLY onto it, rotating it in any direction to get the desired angle.  However it was also an expensive program.  I haven't checked them out in a while but maybe they now have a free version out.  But I suppose i'll have to settle for what I can get my hands on.

I watched your movie and it looks really cool I think. though it is similar to the TEC Novalith Cannon, it is nice to see a beam of variant of it. I also have an idea for an ability you might like to mount on one of your cruisers: What about a tractor beam?}:)   I haven't seen it anywhere else on the forum yet and it would be a unique way to counter enemies whom make use of huge fighter/bomber squadrons. I hope you like my idea, but of course it's up to you to use it or not. Good luck with your new race!

Hmm first the idea, while cool, didn't seem to fit to any of the currrent ships. Actually I had thought giving a blackhole/gravity missile which would deatonate at a frigate and then pull surrounding frigates together. Now I though I found a midway of the two abilities. The capital hip will fire a beam on a frigate and disable it and then it will fire tractor beams on nearby frigates that then will pull them together.
