Good texturing software needed...

Mod tools meshing is good, texturing blows...

I'm looking for some good texturing software to help with my modelling.  XSI mod tool seems pretty good for meshing but it seems to Deliberately degrade the quality of images used when finishing up the texturing, "Smoothing" the image as well as adding a dotted line across the object.  Just to be clear, I'm NOT talking about paint programs like photoshop or gimp or what have you... Any reccommendations? (Must be free software)

A lot of people are talking about blender being a good program, though I don't know if this is only for making the model or if it includes adding the textures.

I'll keep that in mind.  I'll look into it. Meanwhile i'm very open to any other suggestions.

Have use the BlackSmith 3D suite in the past for a model of the Canadaman Halo mod... sample of the result at :

The suite is not free but the blacksmith3D paint is free...

The work method is somehow different that with photoshop or gimp... you directly paint on the 3D model... segmenting and UV are made by the software... you don't need to take care of seam or other problem with 2D paint... back side are that the UV are not really optimised... and are a mess for modify them manually later !!!

In fact, you don't really paint but apply already existing textures... you can find a lot of texture reference on google image... try these link and you will understand what i mean : http://images.google.com/images?hl=nl&safe=off&um=1&sa=1&q=spaceship+texture&btnG=Zoeken&aq=f&oq=&start=0

If you are using XSI for moddeling then i just have some input. Me and my modding team are making a mod for sins called Revolutions (http://www.moddb.com/mods/sins-of-a-solar-empire-revolutions) and we recently switched to blender. Let me just say it is amazing and i would suggest it to anyone. It has some amazing texture tools and they preserve the quality. Anyway i just thought id tell you because im really happy with how its turned out.

BTW that blacksmith program looks awesome if it is anything like zbrush that would be great. could you tell me if it is worth it?
