I got this game yesterday and haven't played online yet. I was wondering if anyone plays mods online. I have Sins of a Galactic Empire, Stargate Invasion, and just downloaded Sins of the 13th Tribe.
There is not really enough of a player base to get enough people using mods though it does happen. The term I liked was "trying to herd cats". Try hosting and see but it is usually friends in private games or LAN parties playing mods.
You should be able to beat the AI on hard before attempting online or be prepared to get stomped. Lots of good articles in the Strategy section.
Despite the small community i have setup a group of people who play mods online quite often.

so as you can see we have a few i would love to play mod games with you the best mods out there are Stargate Races and Distant Stars and we mostly play on Diplomacy come online sometime and ill play a game if im around

Thats a nice list. I was going suggest if you saw Admiral Rain ask some questions. He's good to chat with online. If you see me online I'll play a mod usually if you strike up a conversation with me.

We used to have regular games scheduled for Distant Stars but that seems to have fallen by the wayside. Try that one out.

Have had the game for a while and love it. Just started playing mods this weekend and really impressed with some of them, would love to get some online games!!
note that most of the players in the 2nd list i wrote mostly play Distant stars mod if u want to do the other mods try to talk to one of the people in teh top list

I would like to play mods online as I have quite a few mods on my comp. However, I cannot seem to find games that fit into my schedule, or games at all for that matter!
