The REAL Chatroom

The REAL Chatroom

Or alternative Chatroom

Ok, so I decided to create a new Chatroom, because the old one was getting pretty....old!  ;P

Everyone may post here, as well as in the good'ol Flameroom...I mean, Chatroom *_*

I would like to keep this Chatroom civilized. Well, as civilized as most forum threads are (doesnt mean that you all have to be polite like Oatesy, lol).

So for this reason, I may update the OP of this thread in the future, posting certain thread rules, as I see fit.

For now though, post away, and everyone is welcome! :)

As for the Twin Towers, ofc I think it was wrong.

attacking the world's best equipped and trained army head on, balls out. They didn't
End of Xer07's quote

Actually they've been indirectly fighting Israel for a long time now. They bombed Britain though, if we're talking Western nations.

Oh, you meant that backwater "United States" colony. My bad.

Anyway, I'm glad to see that we all agree that the Twin Towers attack was a bad thing.

Quoting Xer07, reply 1149but attacking Civilians is cowardly. If you want to make a point, you're going to do it by attacking the world's best equipped and trained army head on, balls out. They didn't, thus it was an act of Cowardice.

.........

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's cowardly, because it really is a valid operational consideration in a total war scenario, wherein two political entities are fighting for their very survival.

Seeing as how there hasn't been a total war since the Second World War however, current operational considerations consider civilian casualties a Bad Thing.

For example, would you call the bombing campaigns against urban areas in Japan and Germany cowardly? I wouldn't; those crews were indeed braving quite a gauntlet of enemy interceptors and some serious anti-aircraft artillery firepower.

However, the role of those campaigns were to not only demoralize the populace (not terrorize them, mind you), they were also intended to disrupt economic and productive operations. Effectively, the bombing campaigns were intended to demoralize the civilian populace, thus making fighting the war unpopular, as well as reduce or eliminate war materiel production capability.

Biased viewpoints certainly color accounts of such.

Though to be fair I'm pretty sure that the intention behind the raids in WW2 didn't really have much of a moral justification beyond "if we kill enough of them we can all stop fighting."

After all, if you bomb their factories, they'll rebuild them, but if you bomb their workers, it'll be years before they replace them.

Of course, I don't think that the civilian populace should be targetted in such a way, but it's an interesting topic.

Taking the concept forward, looking at places such as Afghanistan and Iraq, if a civilian is helping the enemy, be it simply in keeping quiet, are they still neutral, or are they on one or the other side? What makes somebody in a non-conventional war an innocent bystander?

For example, if a village has supplies and weapons hidden in a house for the enemy, are they enemy too? Should they be treated as unarmed combatants, or as bystanders?

I would say that if you have weapons in your house, you are liable to be suspected of being a terrorist sympathizer, not as an unarmed combatant, more like a biased bystander... :P

Deal with them by taking their weapons and watching their house.

In war, there are very typically no innocent bystanders. Everyone has an opinion, and they are usually not neutral in a dispute. Though you can't go up and ask them, as they will tell you what you want to hear.

War is a time of silence and hidden allegiance.

Sssssshhh...

The politically-correct folk will be listening in! You can't have opinions in times of war!

They wouldn't do anything to me, as my opinion is quite harmless.

I just believe that we should nuke Iraq. Okay, not really.

I am kinda a pacifist, and I would rather that people wouldn't go and kill themselves in pointless wars.

It was a bit more than that, insofar as it was also intended to drastically decrease enemy civil population morale.

Which it did.

End of Oatesy03's quote

If they're simply keeping quiet, then I'd say it's a case of coercion; the civvies don't want to talk about whether or not there are insurgents there because they don't want to get hurt/killed.

End of Oatesy03's quote

It depends; if the villagers are actively supplying the insurgents with weapons, hiding places, and munitions, then they're unarmed combatants.

If they are being coerced into doing so, then the status is somewhat blurry, but you can't really blame them.

That said, in asymmetric conflicts the line is very, very blurry.

Well, I initially attempted to post all five videos in the same post.......which didn't work. So I quintuple-posted so that all five videos would properly show up.

Also, watch the videos, they're quite good. The fourth is actually a gameplay trailer for a mod, but the song is why I chose it.....incidentally, the video fits the song quite well. Whoever made it was very good, as they've synced the gameplay montage to be in sync with the beat of the song.

It's an Unreal Tournament 3 mod, and the gameplay is nothing like UT3. AFF:Planetstorm is the game that UT3 wants to grow up to be.

Now get out of the REAL Chatroom.
