[SotF] Cosmos Ad Infinitum

[SotF] Cosmos Ad Infinitum

Welcome to the Cosmos Ad Infinitum Mod for Sins of a Solar Empire

Project Goal

Provide the potential for an infinite number of new systems to Sins of a Solar Empire without dramatically changing core game play elements.

To accomplish this, the mod will make use of script generation developed by me to automate the redundant time consuming tasks of creating entity files, wiring the GalaxyScenerioDef, planetary bonuses and planet abilities.

Downloads

Features of the mod:

New Planet Sizes: Moon, Dwarf, Normal, Giant
Custom icons and pictures for all new planets
Matching mainview icon sizes for planets
New planetary bonuses, potentially based on planet type (WIP)
New planetary abilities (WIP)
TBD (new stars, moons, non-traditional planets, etc)

Comments:

Planet Types/Sizes

New planet types must be mapped to one of the existing: Terran, Volcanic, Ice, Desert, Asteroid, or GasGiant equivalent. The new planet type may get some tweaking but will mainly be used to drive the planetary type specific bonus/minus applied to the planet.

Planet sizes may be used to determine bonuses, abilities, upgrades and resource asteroids available. Still researching what I like best.

I'm still in the process of improving a few elements for this mod. One being a script to generate the brush entries for the mainview, hudicons infocards, pictures and undetected icon sets. I've also improved the process for icon and pictures which results in a better quality image (not in the test systems yet).

Current Iteration 1 test Systems:

Compatibility: Diplomacy 1.34

Fictional Sol
(Textures from Celestial Bodies, and various other public sources)

Rigel
(Textures from Rigel system in Celestial Bodies)

Tenorias
(Textures from Tenorias system in Celestial Bodies)

Will these planets work with my favorite mod?

Without additional modifications the answer is no. Many things hinder multiple mods from working together harmoniously. In this case the modifications to the GalaxyScenarioDef and is the largest limiting factor. However, it will be possible to re-generate these or new planet textures for various other mods. I'm currently looking at creating new systems for Distant Stars and Sins of the Fallen which are two mods I play the most (latter expected of course).

Will you make system X work with mod Y?

Probably not unless asked by the modding team to do so.

If I provide you with planet textures for my mod will you do the coding?

Maybe yes. Easiest way to find out is to ask. I would want all planet textures in a 2:1 format and would need to know some other specifics before I agreed to do the work.

Why are some planets pinched at the top?

Some 2:1 planet textures work really well especially if they have some polar ice cap or other uniform top/bottom. Others don't work quite as well due to the way these textures are made and the mapping of a sphere to a 2:1 texture. (You'll see this in a lot of other mods that use mapping like this as well).

Click the planet to jump to the weebly page. Download includes the Dwarf, Standard and Giant mesh, icons, textures and XSI scenes. This page will act as a template for other planets as I add them. Images and icons are from 3d renders.

Nice!

Should I start a new thread, post on different page or keep bumping this thread.

You can post here. This mod is more about doing stuff I or others might want to use without all the other gameplay changes usually associated with mods.

I've also reconsidered my position on the templates and will use your layout for consistency of approach.

Sweeeet

On dwarf entities I set the zoom to 1.5 and Giants zoom is at 1.0 from the standard 1.25. Just did some quick test and it seems to be ok but could use more testing. When zooming on the planet I am trying to match size best I can but I dont even have an icon sheet done yet that have the different sized icons :S

I have Windows 7 64 and have no problems with 7z. What extractor are you using?

Very important as there is 32-bit 7z and 64-bit 7z.

Sounds painful... I wouldn't recommend that.

I've used the Win-7 64/bit 7zip without issues so far too.

Would you prefer MyRus5? ;)

I've used 7zip for years.

It ran fine for about two months and after an update it will not run the correct binary executable by default when I click on a file now--even though it is set as the default program to open those files.  The 7zip forum mentions the issue and offers a workaround but it persists on my machine and others too.

I can open 7z and then open a file from it's interface.  But when clicking on a file itself, it always pulls the wrong exe no matter how many times its uninstalled/reinstalled/reset.

I think winRAR opens 7z.

I'm not sure what the actual issue is.  The problem I had is documented on Source Forge and listed as "solved" but it isn't (and I wasn't the only one with the problem as I've seen several others having tried the SF workaround report the same results).

So here is the fix which I guessed from having moved Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri over:

In Windows 7 you have C:\Program Files and then C:\Program Files (x86).

The first is for 64-bit programs and the other for 32 bit ones.  The installer for 64 bit 7z I have defaulted to the 32 bit directory (which often works fine but not in this case).  So I relocated it by simply copying and pasting the entire folder from the installation into the 64-bit folder and it works.

I have no idea what futzs up the installation (I do have the 64 bit version confirmed).

The new version of WinRar will open 7z files (the older versions don't).

Nothing like a little aggravation to make you solve a problem.

So 7z is fine.  Does compression very well.

Carry on.

Nothing at the links yet, just making a list of what will be included and where the pages are.

Ako Alba Arnessk
Avalon Blink Bog
Callisto Cerca Trova Commerce
Dagobah Dam-Ba-Da Dank
Dante Down Dune
Dust Earth Hammerz
Hoth Io Ixchel
Jinx Jupiter Klendathu
Mars Meh Mercury
Miners Moon Muunilinst Neptune
Pluto Quom Reststop
Rim Saturn Scarl
Serendip Spot Tao Seti
Telos Terminus Trantor
Trask Tsu-Ni Uranus
Venus Wight
Can I get a list of what I a missing. I want my next and previous links to go alphabetically.
This table will be updated at http://soase.weebly.com/new-planets.html. Text replaced by the image of the planet will show which are completed.

Should I be adding the 2 extra shield meshes and the -da.dds dark side texture to every archive or just list links to downloads?

I will make a couple standard dark sides. Sparce, Standard, Populated. For planets like Earth will get there own.

Here is a list of available types of planets. Each new planet will have 1 of these categories that can be changed to suit. Some planets may have "Asteroid" for research which basically means a planet with no atmosphere or Barren.

planetTypeForResearch "Asteroid"
planetTypeForResearch "Desert"
planetTypeForResearch "Ice"
planetTypeForResearch "Terran"
planetTypeForResearch "Uncolonizable"
planetTypeForResearch "Volcanic"

Planetgas0-da.dds 5,462 kb Black-da.dds 6 kb

I have no idea why IC uses a huge texture sheet for the dark side with no lights. FAIL! Also using optimized mesh.

Ready for download soon. Updated the 1st 2 planets with GF icons and fixed the shield links for dwarf and giant.

Can't wait.  Glad you made the GF icons too.

Fictional Sol System Preview. Can be downloaded from moddb.

Fictional Sol System Preview

* Still uses the older planet mesh as some of my textures were exported with that uv-map. I will have to rebuild the textures to use the new planet meshes. The next system Rigel will use the new planet meshes from myfist.

Rigel System (Pending additional testing before downloadable from moddb).

Wow these are very nice.  Can you refresh me on what size planets are included and the size of the model textures again?

Tell me this is not dead...please tell me this is not dead!

It's not dead... It's basically been rolled up into SotF. I need to post some new information on the Tenorias system I created using textures from Celestial Bodies.

As previously stated any of the meshes and associated textures so far may be used in another mod.

Alright cool....good work by the way...

Zombie do you have a version of just the planets that is for Diplomacy (preferable v1.34)?

End of Seleuceia's quote

I can gen a new one that's just the planets. I'll probably upload them to moddb as the last upload was 1.21 compatible.

Here's the SinsPlus icons for the version of these planets I'm using. Similar to the other planet textures are in a 2048x1024 2:1 texture sheet which reduces the texture size from ~5.6meg to ~2.8meg.

Tenorias Planet Textures

Hey Zombie, just FYI the planet pictures on this mod (for the Tenorias system at least) by itself (the one that's on the planet directory thread) seem to be messed up. The zoomed out planet icons themselves are fine, when you select the planet in the picture it looks like you get part of the picture, and two of the zoomed out icons displayed. If its a known problem or that is somehow corrected in your own mod, just ignore this.
