He means Martin Luther, the founder of Lutheranism and the most notable leader of the Protestant Christian reformation. The man who Martin Luther King was named after. As their goal was to supposedly "purify" the Catholic church, I think its a valid connection, but its really kind of irrelevant what they based it on. History has no shortage of religious schisms and attempts to purify religions to their "original meaning".
