Not sure if designers/developers of the game view this forum or not but wanted to suggest an addition that would make game play more innovative and interesting and giving non hostile players who would rather research civ tech and diplomacy a good chance vs players who prefer pure military power.
An addition of spy ship/saboteur and its separate research tab, alowing spy ships be cloaked and be able to destroy high priority targets such as those pesky star bases that can take out a whole army while sporting their own ships, and smaller ship with certain chance of success and failure based on research.
As support role they would be able to en site rebellion on planets disabling them or possibly even turning them against their previous owners as well as bribe or convert smaller ships or for example plant bombs on enemy diplomatic ships causing "diplomatic incidents" destabilizing enemy alliances or even causing wars.Could also detonate the invulnerable mining facilities in asteroid belts and other buildings.I know balancing it could be a bit tricky and I don't think each mission should be instantaneous, perhaps a 30 second charge up time with research influenced dice on if it would succeed or fail.
Lastly since it is a spy ship it would have an option of spying on enemy planets and stealing valuable research unique to the other races (and that the players being spyed on already researched) such as terraforming improvements, weaponry or even blueprints for super-weapons with a chance of failure or success as well
It would be countered by your own spy ships or detected out by the scout ships if it would enter its scan range.
If you like the idea support it by posting so it gets noticed please or any critique why that would suck is welcome too ^^
