What kind of pirate raid is this? Bug?

Playing vasari, its near the beginning of the game.  Been 2 pirate raids so far, neither targetted me.  Third targets me, the bounty was not very high.  32 ships attack me.  I only have 3 planets, 2 capitol ships, and 8 frigates so far, and I get attacked by 32 pirate ships?  Had to scrap the game and restart after turning pirates off.  Are pirate raids now next to unbeatable, or is this a bug?

No, that sounds about right. Pirate raids occur every 15 minutes. By 45 minutes you should far more than 8 frigates and 3 planets.

If you're just learning the game its best to keep the pirate raids off. Actually most people leave the pirate raids off because they're either too strong for new players or just a waste of time for more experienced ones.

Heh, this reminds me of a game I played where a pirate based amassed something like 2000 ships (screenshots below).  I dunno how it happened and unfortunately I was testing out the "small fleet" setting so I could not mass enough frigates/cruisers to stand a prayer against that many pirate ships.  Luckily I was playing as the Advent Loyalist and had a level 9 or 10 titan.  I attacked the pirate base from one direction with the largest fleet of frigates/cruisers I could muster and sent my titan in from a different direction using another phase lane.  I used its planet capture ability on the pirate base then almost rolled when I saw the pirates bomb their own base for me.  This kept them from attacking me with something like 200 ships each time and I just left the base alone after that.  It was a nightmare.  Especially when the pirates turned towards my titan.  Almost lost the stupid thing too before I could phase out.

That can happen if the pirates cannot get to their target when the raid is launched, or if they destroy everything on the planet they raid, they'll head back to base. None of those ships are ever going to attack you though. ;)

Ya, I figured that.  The base was still launching raids at me but it was always a new batch of ships...the 2000 or so there never left.  I tried several different strategies to eliminate them but it wasn't possible (within a reasonable timeframe) with a game set to small fleet cap.  Largest cruiser fleet got I could amass got man handled.  I tried sending in a ton of drone hosts and have them "circle" the grav well to prolong their life since they could stay ahead of the pirates for a while.  Tried dropped 150 homing mines...nothing worked...so after taking out the base with the coronata and bookin it I just left em alone.  It was painful fighting em at .5 FPS lol

If you were advent you could use bombers with combination of repulse...... Keep your coronata in and once you had lv 6 it would do short thing of them . Bring in some progens with malice it should kill them even faster...

Valid strategies...but 2000 of them?  With me restricted to a small fleet?  Granted it would work after several/many tries eventually but I had already wasted enough time with them.  Besides, Every time I enetered that grav well my comp chugged at .5 FPS....it was painful lol

if your comp staggering my strategy would be imposible because you cannot micro.....

Back in diplomacy 1.00 pirates were very very strong. I had similar problem 1000+ ships in pirate base grav well all with capital ship stats HP 3500+ armour 35+ and dmg 40+. I played vasari and just for fun I wanted to see how many kosutras would take to kill them (kosutras were still doing dmg to ships). I build 20 of them and if I remember correctly it took 50 shots to get rid of them.

First I obliterated the pirates world using Novalith canon. Apparently it is irrelevant to the pirates anyway as they continued as usual.

I attacked pirate base with level 10 Tian and 10 x Level 10 Dreadnoughts plus a few frigates of each type and as many Percheron carriers as I could do with a big fleet.

Battle lasted under a minute before my fleet was obliterated.

After battle, there were:

488 x Corsaires

761 x Pirate Rogues

193 x Pirate Pillagers

385 Pirate Reapers

774 x Pirate Cutthroats

19 x Pirate defence platforms

3 x Hangar Defence Platforms

2 x Repair Platforms

still in action around the pirate base.

Dude if you had 10 level 10 Marza class Dreadnaughts and still didn't win you must be an incredible noob since 10 Missile Barrages will wipe out everything in a moderate area...

Sorry to say, but really you should have won that battle no matter how many pirates were present at their base.

Hence the reason why Distant Stars uses ships that will die after 30 minutes for pirate raids.

Missile barrage is channelling...you can't give a marza a move order while it's using the ability, otherwise it'll stop using missile barrage...that'd be my guess anyway why nothing happened....

With those numbers I would level up a VL titan and then send it along with a few capital ships with orders to hold position, one all those ships were focusing on the titan I would activate the maw and BAM most of that fleet is now eaten. The Vasari rebel titan can also deal well with large numbers.

Another way to deal with those huge groups of pirates as TEC is to send main fleet to distract pirates for a moment (before jumping safely away) and at the same time build starbase with red button upgrade and colony ships taking pirate base (nuked by novaliths) - red button is great tool :)
