How to arrange desktop things by type in Win&

Greetings:

This is really a newbie question. I have Fences but is there some way to organize folder, files, etc on my win7 desktop by type?

I can't seem to find this option.

The pro version has rules that will organize files by type.

I would be happy to buy the pro version but will it work with Windows 8?

Does it arrange by type if the folders, docs aren't in the fenced in area?

Fences is not supported in Win8 at this time.

It does not organize or sort outside of Fences.
