Noob question: What is the criteria for military victory?

I picked up the game on the Steam special last week.  On my 3rd attempt at single player, after reading advice in the strategy forums and dumbing down the AI, I was well on my way to dominating the map when all of a sudden the game announced that I had won a military victory.  The AI enemy still had at least 3 planets including their home planet, so I was surprised that I had won so early.

I read though the PDF manual that is supplied with SoaSE:Rebellion, and could not find any description of when the military victory is achieved.  The other victory conditions are described.  Apparently it's not required that you take all the planets, or that you wipe out their fleet.  Does anyone know exactly what the criteria is?  Thanks.

The AI just saw that it was about to be slaughtered and surrendered instead of dragging the game on. But you can still kill them if you just push the "Keep playing" button.

OK, thanks.  I didn't know that the AI would surrender.

No problemo. I am usually a bit surprised when the AI surrenders, too - I am usually right in the middle of a battle and then suddenly "oh, I won. But I think I'll mop you up anyways." No mercy for cowards.

lol me too, especially when he does it after he has no more than 2 planets and absolutely no chance, and I've been waiting for his surrender for over an hour :D Sometimes AI does not surrender even he has no chance.. Thats why i play with capital victory, this way i can be sure AI is really defeated when it is defeated (lost his homeworld meanwhile losing all his fleet there).
