First episode was pretty good. Not good enough to pay for a service for one show only. But then, no show could be good enough for me to do that.

Perhaps I'll get the service at the end of the season and binge it over a weekend. Good thing with that is by then there will be a plethora of reviews to see if it is worth it. Ideally, their service fails and they put it on OTA broadcasting.

HEADS UP.    

You can get 5 weeks free trial on CBS All Access--not just 1 week.   That's at least 6 episodes of Star Trek:Discovery.    Big difference between just one trial episode and six.  

I just tried to cancel my 1-week trial, and they offered me 1 month additional if I would stay.   I took it.   You don't need to contact a customer rep--you only need to find the "Cancel Subscription" link on the All-Access website.  They will auto-bill you $6 if you don't cancel before the trial period is over, but I'm not terribly worried about it--the credit card I used to sign up expires before the auto-bill date.  

So just sign up, cancel before the week is up, get an extra month, cancel it again.  You can see if you like Discovery.     (that said, I am not overly impressed with CBS All-Access, other than it carries Star Trek)

What day do they play it.

Yup, just like bankers, trying to squeeze your last buck out of you with extra fees and charges.  Same thing with Foxtel and its 'additional' services.  I refuse to pay extra for movies, etc, that'll come under my regular subscription in a few weeks anyway.  I simply will not pay more to see something sooner than regular subscribers, period.

I mean, what's the hurry anyway?  To get into chatrooms to discuss shows cos I got nothing better to do?  Nah, I'm not that desperate... for the show... or the online 'company'.

The first episode left me ... meh.  The captain left me totally cold, I liked her even less than Janeway.  The interactions between the captain and first officer were painful.  There is potential in the back story of the first officer and Sarek.  Why reinvent the Klingons yet again?  Not that Roddenberry was ever completely consistent, but is anybody in charge?  One episode didn't give enough time to judge the other characters.  If it was on my current cable subscription I'd give it a few more chances, but I'm not signing up for a streaming service just for it.

You need to see the second episode.  There is a specific reason why first impressions aren't everything on this one.

If that's the case, then the network made a major mistake in not showing enough episode to hook people before switching it to pay streaming.

I agree with a lot of what Midnight and RLM have had to say about ST:D.

Honestly, ST:D could be a decent "gritty" sci-fi show. In fact I am one of the trekkies who loved DS9 and have always had a place in my heart for shows like Battlestar Galactica or Black Mirror. Star Trek, however, should be a show that is optimistic or at least has a fun spirit to it. Even for someone who is a fan of the Kelvin timeline, this show really does not have the same Star Trek tone that even Enterprise got.

If this show was just called "Void" or something else suitably ominous and presented as is, stripped of all of the Star Trek framing, I would probably get into it. As it stands though, this show not only feels out of touch by incredibly desperate to try and grab new fans but steamrolling over the legacy of Star Trek by setting it near the same period and timeline as TOS.

Factoring in all of the bad business decisions on the part of CBS I do not see this show surviving past a single season, maybe two. So perhaps it is good that I do not get invested, or try to get invested, in its characters and arcs. It is really just a shame that all of those great sets and CGI is going to waste.

Star Trek:TNG took a season to figure things out.  They finally let Deanna Troi let down her hair--and then later put Troi in that really dumb romantic relationship with Worf, seasons down the road (even Marina Sirtis felt kind of weird about that).

Troi and I had more of a connection than Troi and Worf, and I was warp 10 away.  I could see it in her eyes.  She wanted me bad. 

 My dream Trekkie babe was always Lt Uhura.... and I'd liked to have had a connection.    

The other was 7 of 9... would've walked backwards at warp 10 across the universe to have gotten into a bit of Borg.

Seven of Nine, hands down.
