Bug report thread v1.11.078

Might as well get things rolling for the newest patch. And to start things off, it seems that the AI is not bound to the new starbase rules--in my first 1.11 game I found that the Drengins had constructed a group of starbases, with two of them closer than the new rules allow (one was a tile to the right and two above the other--a position that the rules prohibited me from duplicating).

Captain Bizarre --

There's problems with the auto-build-on-resource option. If you turn it off, you should be able to play normally until this is fixed.

i think there is a bug in the metaverse, im the emperor of Evil Empire, and i have been trying to upload a new logo, but i cannot, i keep getting the error:

Error: -2147220384 Unable to save file (Error 1120)
EDITEMPIRE

i made sure the logo is 32 x 32 pixels, and that it is a JPG, and also that the name only contains valid characters, but i still keep getting the same error. i have tried uploading from a different computer, i have even tried uploading the same current logo, but i still get the same error. can you help me?

I have the disappearing graphics/starbases...
kinda annoying. After the bug sets in, the new ship types are invisible, and starbases that are upgraded post-bug become invisible as well.

I got the CTD on saving after a Draginol once too. But only once.

Hi!
Some bugs for version 1.11.078, I hope that some developer will answer to this:

1. the "near omnipotence" technology doesn't offer me the choice to study "excalibur technology", as reported in the tech tree;

2. if I change government, the economic bonus remains +20, instead of going to +40 and +60 ad manual and other resources report;

3. if I change social/industrial/research rates, and then I move on the research panel, it doesn't update the month remaining;
if I go back to the economic panel, then back again to research panel, it shows the correct one.

also, a suggestion: it could be better to show, on the technology sheet, also the cost of that technology, so everybody can precisely evaluate how much it will take to study it.
And it sucks that you simply waste exceeding research... why don't use it automatically for the next one? I think it's really easy to implement!

Bye

I've experienced most of these bugs too on v1.11.

AI starbases closer than 3 parsecs is the worst one - i had a game where the Altarians had dozens and dozens of starbases and in one case there were about 7 in 1 sector. Luckily I had Excaliburs and took out all of them with 1 ship in 1 turn.

Also, I've noticed that the 'disappearing ships' bug doesn't happen in all games. It happended all the time in my previous game but has not happened at all in the current one, which I've been playing for over a week for hours at a time.

The 1 IP bug has never worked for me, and I've only tried it in v1.11.

The only exploitable 'bug' I've used is this one: if you've got a few grand in the bank, give it all to a minor, then start war on them, and then offer peace for all their money over 50 turns. Obviously you get your investment back straight away. Works every time (if you're hard enough) :) Although it does backfire if they give it to another Major before you get the chance!

I probably shouldn't have mentioned it 'cos now Cari'll do something about it!

Hope this info helps, SD.

not sure if these were reported since there is no way to search a topic for keyword so:

1) tradeship in planet bug re-appeared in ver 1.11.078. I have saved game. could not figure why torian, my friends, kept attacking 1 planet until I sent a ship from orbit and tried to return. Got message saying Do I really want to attack Dregin trade-ship. trade ship was inside star.

2) starbase Excalibur-killer defense doesn't work. I'm currently playing a gigantic rare game, last tech left to research and only excaliburs roaming galaxy. With attack of 300+, all SB are sitting ducks. Need more def mods. I have Excaliburs guard SB.

3) Starbase just got very expensive to maintain. 10 cr for building plus 1 cr for each improvement.

I concur. At least an update button would be welcome. Also, the amount of BC available in the main screen is not refreshed every turn. You can force it by going to the economy panel, but it's painful to do it every turn when you're borderline.

I'll third the motion. In particular, while adjusting sliders there should be a small on-screen indicator of the number of turns to go in research. I use F2 so I can see (roughly) what's happening to the build turns, but it's annoying to have to toggle back and forth to the research screen...especially when it turns out that the research screen was wrong! just a few suggestions
1) make it possible for ships in sectors with extremely strong influence to rebel and join the side of the culturally superior. or make it possible some how for the military to rebel, along with starbases to join YOUR side.
2)

bugs
1) i traded the same techonology to the same speices 4 times. i am not sure if this has been reported or not.

I'm about 500 turns into a Gigantic game and it's CTD twice in the last few turns with the latest patch. I never had even one crash with earlier patches. Very frustrating.

OK, the game mentioned above now crashes regularly at the same point. I am unable to continue my current game. Any of the testers want a saved file?

bug (probably old) - gave Torians some old dreads to keep 'em going, but they surrendered to the Arceans in the same turns. Dreadnoughts remained Torian and remained on the map.

if the system you have been trading with is being taken over by another empire, the color of the other empires planet that you trade with should change (under 'trade'), since its a new empire now.
but it remains the same until i quit and relaunch galciv.

the same happened as i killed a trade route and then immediately opened a new one with another empire.

under 'trade', where the target planets are shown, the colors did not adjust correctly. (is it just the color or also the benefits for the empire i trade with thats mixed up?)

i hope i managed to word it in a way that can be understood :p

if the bug is already known -- sorry about wasting your time.

Ive got a problem in Gal Civ too - it was fine before I updated to the new patch but now it doesnt work correctly.

I start a new game and around a dozen turns into the game in crashes and quits - i think it may have something to do with the autosave?
But then again it may not because after that it wont let me back into the game at all - i have to reboot my computer to get it to run only for the thing to die a dozen turns into it again.

Its pretty frustrating. I was thinking on unstalling the lot n reinstalling from the beginning.

Maxtipherous: Do you still have a save game from before the Draginol take over your planet? If you do, please zip both the .sav file and the folder and send it to me at [email protected]

Zen Blade: Do they come back after saving, shutting down GalCiv, and then starting it up again and reloading? If not, does debug.err (in your galciv directory) report any missing files?

s1mone: I'll check into your reports.  As for your suggestions, you wouldn't be able to evaluate the time it should take from just the cost, because there are other factors involved.  You'd need other stats too, and at that point you'd be sitting there with your calculator every turn.  I will, however try to find out why the research time left doesn't update correctly.  As for wasting exceeding research, it's not a matter of ease of programming.  It would be unrealistic to funnel the money leftover from one tech to another.

rubberduckyzz: are you using any mods? Did you just give them the tech, or was it an actual trade? What tech was it?

elmo3: Please install SmartException from Stardock Central.  It's under the free stuff tab.  It will generate a crash log when Gal Civ crashes that will help us to narrow down what is causing the crash.  Your debug.err and a dxdiag report may also be useful.  The save game may be useful since you seem to be able to reproduce it with the save game. Just tell me what to do to reproduce it, or a timeframe if it happens within a certain amount of turns.

angelscotboi: Did you start out with the german version? Does debug.err report anything odd? Are you using any mods? You may also want to install SmartException.

In case anyone has missed it, my e-mail is [email protected]. If you're sending me a save game, please make sure that you include the folder with the same name as the .sav file.

The files were just sent to you. Thanks.

Im in the UK - i bought my copy here so im pretty sure it aint the german version...
I used Stardock Central to update it...
I also just reinstalled it all and it worked the first time around but when i went back to it later is started crashing again...
And no theres no mods on it its just everything Stardock gives.

I just checked the Debug.err and heres what it says:

"Debug Message: ******* Starting Game Shell *******
Debug Message: Going Fullscreen
Debug Message: Preparing to change display settings.
Debug Message: RGB in format 5:6:5, Masks reported as f800:7e0:1f
Debug Message: Unable to create Video Memory Canvas. Creating System Memory canvas. 1
Debug Message: Lock Error."

Also whats SmartException?

Ouch.  You're getting video memory errors.  I suggest that you re-install your video card drivers and re-install the latest version of DirectX to clear up that problem.

SmartException is a program that creates crash logs when a program crashes.  It's available in the Free Stuff tab of Stardock Central, but since you're getting video memory errors, I can tell you right now that's what's causing your crashes.  Also, have you recently installed or updated any programs such as Quicktime, Winamp3, WinDVD, or a tv tuner?

I installed Quicktime not long ago - but this problem only really started happening since i installed the Gal Civ patch...or maybe ive only noticed it since then. LOL
Reply #96 Top

:) Well, hopefully re-installing your drivers and DirectX should work.  If it doesn't, run dxdiag and send the report to me at [email protected].  Also, check to make sure that the .bik files in your movie directory aren't associated with quicktime.  If they are, you can reclaim the associations by installing the bink game tools from www.radgametools.com

I don't think they were ever in the game. Just one of the manuals errors

Not sure if this one was addressed already, but it seems that when a starbase is disbanded, the game still thinks its there as far as where you can build starbases. ie, I am getting the error about not being able to build a stabase within 3 parsecs despite the fact that the starbase in the area had been destroyed.
