windowblinds not compatible with 98 anymore..?

unfortunately.. yes because ive been having problems with XP so I installed 98....

According to the text at top of this page Link, the "Enhanced" version will support 98/ME.

I would recommend contacting sales to confirm.

i perfectly understand maori (i laughed at skinner ash08's reaction! i too use win 98). now, according to the link previously mentioned by corky, windowblinds should work with win 98. interestingly enough though, stardock central completely messes up my win 98 se! the fonts go berzerk - dissapearing, the arial/tahoma toolbar switching to times new roman, and sometimes switching to "symbol"!!
if anyone can answer, tell me please what i should do. i very recently reinstalled my laptop (equiped with modem) win 98 se and all. i download (have object desktop pack) files and archive them, then transfer them to my xp pc. i stoped writing stardock when the woman i asked advice from became really ... unpleasant telling me i really should have ordered the cd. i see her point, except that getting the thing for the cd to be lost by mail (i live in madagascar, hence far, hence more chances to lose mail) was not something i was considering acceptable. and i did want the possibility to update. when i first got the set - a while back - sc did not give me issues. now it does. i've updated stardock to the latest non-beta version, still it messes my system up. to the point where if i select an install of object dock it tells me it only runs on win 98. and yes, as i said i have win 98.
i will write and ask stardock if need be, but that woman freaked me out so much making me feel guilty for selecting the download/transfer through stardock central that i'd rather ask you - users and fans of stardock, like i - for help/advice.

I am not sure how much help this will be, as I no longer have a machine running Windows 98, but just in case -

You might try going here Link, and enter your e-mail address used when you ordered the network version.

You should then receive an e-mail with a link for SDC (with any luck, it will be the original version you paid for - though it may be the most recent).

Try downloading from the link, then disconnect from the internet and install SDC. You will receive a message saying you won't be able to update, etc.. - just say continue.

You should end up with SDC installed and working "Offline". Go to "Tools > Settings" and select the options to have Stardock central (1) check for Stardock Central Release updates, and (2) Notify you when an update is available.

You will want to make sure that any beta version update, and install SDC updates automatically options are deselected.

Reboot computer > reconnect to the internet > start SDC > use "Tools > Register products", and register any products you have using the serial numbers and register/update buttons.

Make sure the "Show pre-release versions" check box at bottom of SDC window is deselected, and then attempt to install WindowBlinds.

With any luck, you will be able to get a version installed that is compatible with Windows 98.

Here's the situation with Windows 98:

There's not much been added to the 9x build of WindowBlinds in the last few years, because it's reached the point where there's too few users still on it who are still interested in customization, and because the level of system resources available with Win98 (an inherent limitation of the OS) makes it impractical to add more; things end up crashing randomly and it results in a lot of support calls. As a result, although the version number has been updated, the 9x build has not had significant new features for a long time.

If you are a registered user and wish to get it working, do talk to support and ask them if they can give you a standalone install or something that should let you get it working, but if it doesn't work, I'm afraid you may be out of luck. I do have 9x machines on which it works fine, and I run a nice light skin on them (Blackcomb) to make sure it stays that way.

thank you both (corky & greenreaper) for your help and advice. i'll try it out and will tell you how it comes out. interestingly, i am NOT interested in skinning my win98. because when i use it i want it to be the extreme of lightweight, with as few programs running at the same time as possible (yes, i know windowblinds and other parts of object desktop take not much memory, but any memory save is good even if it's a few kilobytes). my win98 is used for downloads, storage, and testing more than anything. it's xp that i skin. but of course, my xp pc did not come equiped with a modem, partly because i don't have a phone line at home (geeze, i know, i sound "so exotic" eh? ) and i just still get extremely nervous with security issues in winxp. so for me, i need for at least (if only, because i archive then transfer my programs to xp with my flash disk) stardock central to work.
i ADORRRRRRE object desktop and am trying to save as much as i can to both re-subscribe and buy (hopefully ) a subscription to wincustomize... ah. time. money. disk space!
