You sure can do that, I've made a few sound schemes, they are just single wav files so can be edited in any wav editor. Heres a good free one http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ Audacity, its open source, no spyware or anything bad will come with it. That's a tricky one. Ideally you'd want a new format that could wrap up the dataset, textures, DX effects, physics and all the usual paramaters you'd expect from an icon.
