Brad has stated repeatedly that Stardock would be fine without WC Ouch. If I got one of those subscription services through the post, you know the kind of thing, get x things free when you sign up and commit to buy x over the year. And the footer read "I'm really not bothered if you go for this or not

You sure can do that, I've made a few sound schemes, they are just single wav files so can be edited in any wav editor. Heres a good free one http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ Audacity, its open source, no spyware or anything bad will come with it. The sounds are stored by default in C:\WINDOWS\Media so just edit them and save them back there. Easiest way to make sure all sounds are at the same volume level, load up the

non-subscribers on deviantART can't even search. That's true and it's a really clever way to get people who want a lot of content to subscribe. The casual first timer is not pushed away, they can still find the content, there are clearly laid out heirarchies of categories. I think the no search option

Ok just listened to it, enjoyable, informative and it has Kristen in it. A winner lol. I had to pause and go check out sparkle though. http://www.microsoft.com/products/expression/en/demos.aspx This was a good link to see one of the apps in the suite in action, sadly it wasn't the app i really wanted to see. It's nice Microsoft is bringing a complete environment for this together but I wonder how many are actually going to dump t

I'm sorry you take it that way. It was not implied. I am no better than anyone else. The only difference is I am a member. If you want to attach a stigma to it, you are free to do so. I just took it as I saw it. A little quote from animal farm "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal

Because if you were this person and you enjoyed coming here and you enjoy the artwork you find here and you want things to stay the way they are. i.e. free, then you would hopefully feel compelled to chip in and help a bit. I agree with you 100% but that clearly isn't working. I think the problem lies

There are only so many animated objects we want on our desktop. This is one thing that apple has down, they know that subtle quality will out shine in your face "effects" every time. I completely agree, design has to be a secondary consideration to function. Something a lot of flash coders could take

It would be interesting to set up a small test. I have a beta of Visual Studio, but I got no idea on how to incorporate DX files into programs. I suppose it'd be easier if I had Avalon to mess about with... Can't really help you there but great that you thought of trying it. I'd happily provide 3D mod

If the skins and themes are not enough incentive, then I don't know what is. You missed my point completely. I'm actually in agreement with you, the bandwidth nightmare has to be resolved but my point was that if you were the type of person that was here just to download and were already getting every

I see no problem with offering premium suites to attract new subscriptions from drive by's and more recent visitors, etc, Clearly the site as it stands offers so much its mind boggling. To offer more is absolutely no incentive for anyone to subscribe. <TABLE cellpadding=8 width="95%" align=

As for WC exiles and the ill press about WC... just remember, bad news travels faster than good news. People love to complain and rant about something but a small percentage actually smile and say thank you. Never a truer word spoken.

i think there's too much stuff and a lot of it sometimes seems like crap too - that's a big reason i love coming here is i think it's organized, so many search options, and *usually* good stuff on here, That's an interesting point of view and I'm sure a lot of people who come here purely to download

I really think it's pretty simple: the bulk of people are perfectly willing to take something for free if it's available. Since the downloads are there for free, and that is most likely what most people are looking for, there is no reason for them to subscribe. The idea of "making better use of the traffic" misses this poi

I don't mean to tell anyone how to run a site with this comment, everyone involved is well aware of what they need to do and Stardock make it clearer than you might expect about the gears behind the scenes. One point that I'd like to make is the idea that the solution to an ever expanding traffic base is to drive that traffic away. I understand there is plenty of traffic here right now that is passing through and not a large enough percentage of that t

That's an awfuly old motherboard, pretty nasty graphics now, out of date chipset by a long chalk and really a bad choice to serve as the basis for a new budget box I'd say. My thinking when it comes to computers is get three parts first and the rest can be compromised. The motherboard, the chair and the screen

The motherboard is pretty cheap but packed with goodies, it does lack PCI-X though. I'd recommend crucial every time as far as memory goes. All the above is budg

Hang on, V7 will be out next week, Apple are on a fast release schedule. V17 is the target for xmas. I think the deal Steve Jobs struck with the coders where they get a bonus every new version might have something to do with it

OK I couldn't resist it lol I'm not out to prove anything here, just thought it would be fun to play with the idea of a 3D icon. I did a few tests, the following image was rendered using nothing more than directx9 effects. Despite the simple look of the model it's actually quite complex, just wanted to push it and see how well it would handle in real-time. <br

The idea of 3d icons is cool, and I'll probably play with the idea tirelessly for a few weeks, but after a while it will be commonplace, and not add anything to the usability of my computer. You might be right, sometimes what you see in your head doesn't translate to what can actually be achieved or i

18 Replies 7,943 Views

That's a tricky one. Ideally you'd want a new format that could wrap up the dataset, textures, DX effects, physics and all the usual paramaters you'd expect from an icon. The url it pointed to and so on. Problem there would be the need for a completely new editor to create the 3D and that would alienate pretty much the majority of 3D heads out there who are already very comfortable with their chosen 3D App. I'm no programmer but I think usin
