What is the orbital refinery for? How can I get metal or crystal factories to mine them at a faster rate? (is it to do with orbital refinery) i lost a planet to attack and the rest of my planets very quickly went down to allegiance 0 and i lost the game. did i need a broadcast centre to stop this?

I consider myself a good strategy gamer and I know games like this can be daunting and difficult, but what am I doing wrong? I started alarge map, FFA, chose TEC, and got but owned in like hour by capital ships and all manner of uber butt owning ships within that time, and not only was it enough for one of them to butt own me, but they ALL ganged up and butt owned me.... they all made treaties or something?
